Examine the Company Behind The Product
No work-at-home business affiliate can prosper when the firm offering the opportunity is weak or suffers from systemic problems. Ask these questions about the business supporting your business:
- Has it been in business long enough to have a measurable track record of success?
- Is it ethical? Do it and its products enjoy good reputations?
- Does it have an admirable core set of beliefs and principles? What are its mission and organizational culture? Do they align with your life values, dreams and ambitions?
- Does it support, guide, train and nurture its members and affiliates?
- Is it a market leader, follower or Johnny-come-lately?
- Does it provide a proven and replicable business system?
- Does it guarantee its products?
- Is it creative, entrepreneurial, and growing—and inventing new items?
- Are its management and leadership teams reputable, solid, experienced, visionary and inspired?
- Is it debt-free or highly leveraged? Will it still be in business one, five and ten years from now?
- Is it easy to perform due diligence about the company and it's products?
- Does it offer prospective affiliates several levels of participation, where one can a put a toe in the business's waters inexpensively and ramp up later? Or is there only a single high-cost "buy in."
About Us and TriVita
Why We Believe in TriVita: A True Story

We're TriVita business affiliates George and Alta Daleiden, shown here at our daughter's wedding with our other three children.
In 2008, Alta, a registered nurse, developed a stiff neck about the time her 94 year-old mother (pictured in wheelchair) fell gravely ill. In the months when Alta cared for her mom before her eventual passing, her neck became increasingly sore whenever she'd pivot it left or right. "I tried several remedies: sleeping on a new mattress, various conventional and water-filled pillows, painkillers, chiropractic, balms and salves, massage, and sundry exercises. None of these approaches worked well, if at all. None of them had any lasting therapeutic effect." The soreness and stiffness went on for a year.
While looking into TriVita and doing our due diligence, Alta learned of Nopalea, a new natural remedy for inflammation. "I took my first 3 oz daily doses of Nopalea with some skepticism. I'm a surgical RN. One of the doctors I work with is a pain specialist who uses sophisticated techniques and devices in treating his patients. I thought it reasonable that something out of a bottle (even a very attractive bottle) would probably be no match for high tech modern medicine."
"Within two days starting Nopalea, I felt a mild but very definite relief. Each day, the pain lessened, and by about the tenth day the pain was 99% gone."
"As a nurse, I meet and minister to many people suffering from pains of every description and severity. Perhaps no human condition is as emotionally and physically debilitating as chronic pain. If Nopalea can help them as it has helped me, the art of healing has made an enormous leap."
TriVita the company, and its products in our opinion are outstanding. They meet and often surpass the criteria discussed in this lens.
Evaluate the Products or Services Offered
Ultimately, every business concern thrives or fails in direct proportion to whether its products provide value in the marketplace.
- Are the products understandable by an ordinary individual?
- How many products are for sale? Do they appeal to a wide and diverse audience? Are they safe and ethical?
- Are the products needed or desired? Do they confer real benefits?
- What is their measurable quality? Are there credible testimonials and endorsements?
- Are they unique, patented or different from and superior to their competition? If the products are science-based, is there genuine peer-reviewed science behind claims asserted?
- Are they fairly priced? What is the reorder rate?
- Have they sold in the past and are they selling now?
- Does the company support and help customers in the use of its products?
- Is the market for the products temporary or permanent? Is the opportunity ground floor in an exploding market environment, or is it in a mature or even dying industry?
- Do business affiliates actually use the products they promote and sell?
Sales and Marketing: Who Does What?
Remember the adage: nothing happens until someone sells something.
- How does the organization attract customers and encourage them to try and buy products? Does the company actively promote its products, or will that be solely your obligation? Where, how, when and how often will the company market and advertise?
- Does the company partner or coop with its affiliates in acquiring new customers, and share the marketing costs?
- Does the company provide free or inexpensive marketing tools and materials?
- Does the company sell against its affiliates online or in stores and effectively compete with them?
New customers are expensive for any business. What will it cost to acquire a buyer? Consider all the factors: advertising, promotion, front-office and sales staff. A successful well-oiled company like Netflix spends between $29 and $44 for each new subscriber addition. Some industries, like insurance, spend about $250 to gain a new customer.
- Who will handle and pay for buyer retention and its associated expense: customer relationship marketing (CRM) costs, customer service, returns, follow-up and cross marketing initiatives.
- Will a large network of friends, coworkers and family be indispensable in launching the home business? Will aggressive—even pushy or obnoxious sales approaches—be needed to succeed? Are there ways to expand the business without pestering everyone in your circle of influence, if that's not our style? Can you succeed if you're not a sales and marketing wizard?
- If your customers think highly of your products, and refer others to your business, do they (and you) reap any financial rewards?
- Are there sales quotas? What are the consequences of not achieving them?
- Must an affiliate purchase and inventory product minimums and resell them?
Is the primary focus of the home business opportunity to recruit other affiliates (downlines) and expand a network? Consider it a blazing red flag if products—good products—do not take center stage in the business model.
- Is the market saturated with consultants and affiliates for this opportunity?
Operations: Who Does The Heavy Lifting?
In any business, production, fulfillment (satisfying customer orders), running a call center, accounting, shipping and so forth can be complex and burdensome.
- Who processes transactions, and makes and delivers or distributes the products?
- If the offering company performs operational tasks, how well does it perform, and at what cost to affiliates?
- Who handles sales tax, shipping, returns, and complaints?
- Who processes credit cards?
- What back office system, if any, does the company provide to enable members and affiliates to track orders, customers and other essential business details?
Compensation
Think Long Term, Think Residual Income
- Is the pay plan fair, lucrative and relatively easy to understand?
- Does the offering company recognize and reward star performance?
- Does it provide residual income and more than one income stream?
- Does it offer an upward career path and incentive bonuses for high achievers?
- Is the payout plan self-sustaining? Most network and multilevel marketing (MLM) models collapse when downline affiliates lose interest and leave the business. Would the home business still thrive and the revenue stream continue even if no members or affiliates promoted the products and the opportunity-because the products would continue to sell?
