Choosing the Right Tropical Fish Aquarium

One of the great things about owning fish is that virtually any container can work as a tropical fish aquarium, if it's big enough and is watertight.

Your Fish Aquarium

Of course you need a proper filter, overhead lights for your container, and the right additions to your tank such as decorations, vegetation and substrate (the material at the bottom of the tank such as sand or gravel). But most people aren't typically going to use some great big dish or bowl as their tropical fish aquarium; they're going to head on down to the pet supply store or purchase a used tank from a garage sale or online for their hobby. If you're in the market right now for a tropical fish aquarium you may note the many different sizes, styles, and materials and may wonder just what is the right choice for you.

Each type, style, and material has its own pros and cons as you would expect and of course no one can say what is best for you; it's going to be up to you to make the final decision. But let's take a closer look at some of the features of the most common tropical fish aquarium types there are and then you can make that decision for yourself.

The Best Fish Aquarium

For one thing it's always recommended that you purchase the largest tropical fish aquarium you can afford and fit in your home. This isn't so that the aquarium makers get more profit but because the more water you have, the healthier your fish will be and the less you'll actually need to clean the tank. Water has its own natural filters so the larger the tank, the less bacteria and algae buildup you'll get. Fish also need a lot of room to swim around and play with other fish, hide, keep their own territory, and so on. Just like people don't enjoy being in an overcrowded condition, a large tropical fish aquarium is going to be better for your fish. Of course if you get a smaller tropical fish aquarium you just need to adjust the amount of vegetation, decorations, fish, and the size of fish varieties you stock it with.

Glass Or Acrylic?

Should you opt for a glass or acrylic tropical fish aquarium? The concern between these two choices is that acrylic is actually harder to clean - if you use a straight edge on the walls you'll scrape them and damage them, whereas this doesn't happen with glass. However glass is much heavier than acrylic, so consider how often you move, if your apartment complex allows glass tanks on a second floor (they're more likely to topple if not set up right), and things such as these. Again, only you can decide what type of tropical fish aquarium is going to be best for your home and your hobby, but if you understand these basics then you'll be more able to choose between glass or acrylic and probably now understand why you should get the largest tropical fish aquarium you can afford.
