Anyone that takes some time with their fish to really get to know them and to observe them is going to find that they are just as enjoyable and engaging as any other pet. If you're interested in keeping tropical pet fish or already have a tank in your home, what are some important ways of keeping them happy and healthy?
For one thing make sure that you don't have too many tropical pet fish in your tank. It's not always possible for a person to have a huge tank in the house and when you have a smaller tank you need to adjust the amount of fish and the size of the varieties you choose accordingly. When a tank is overcrowded with too many tropical pet fish they can't move around as freely as they should and don't always interact well with the other fish. They may get territorial and start to nip at other fish. It's also just not healthy for them if they don't have room to swim around freely.
You also need to do some research and have some understanding about different varieties of tropical pet fish as some are very aggressive and some are very shy and docile. If you put too many aggressive fish in your tank they're just going to fight with one another, and if you have too many with shy and docile fish then those are going to be picked on and may get hurt. It's not that hard to learn the basics of the different varieties of tropical pet fish and you can quickly do this research online or even just ask your pet store attendant. Most fish are perfectly fine with other fish but there are a few varieties that are aggressive, just as there are breeds of dog that you need to be careful about. Do a bit of homework and you'll make the right choices.
Cleaning your tank regularly without over-cleaning it and giving your tropical pet fish just enough food but not too much is also important for them to be happy and healthy. You don't want to make a mistake in either direction when it comes to cleaning or feeding, doing these too often or not often enough. It's a common mistake for many that own tropical pet fish to give them too much food and to not clean the tank often enough, but don't clean it so vigorously or be tempted to use harsh chemicals on it either.
If you follow these simple steps you'll be well on your way to having tropical pet fish that are both happy and healthy.
