Trout Fishing Tips ~ Learn How To Catch Trout When Others Can't

Besides showing you some great Trout Fishing Tips that are sure to help you catch more Trout from a small stream I will also show you how I make a game out of going one-on-one with the elusive Trout. I will talk about the type of Trout Fishing gear I use, type of bait and how I read the the stream to catch fish others can't.

The inspiration for this lens comes from a vary memorable afternoon with three of my fishing buddies. We set two cars about a mile apart and planned to start at one car and walk the creek to the other car. If you've ever done this you know it's much more difficult to catch fish in an area someone else has already fished so you hopscotch over one person and fish an area no one has fished yet. This day I decided to follow everyone and fish all the areas they already fished to see if I could catch the fish the others couldn't. When we made it back to the second car all three of them had been skunked...no fish at all...as I held up my stringer with three nice Brookies... I tried not to rub it in too much....LOL.... I hope these Trout Fishing Tips help you to have the same kind of fun I had that day.

Trout Fishing Tips ~ Choosing The Right Gear

Well... the first thing your going to need is tackle and bait. You cant go fishing without a fishing pole......actually I did once....how embarrassing.....I had to row the boat all day.

Any way this Trout Fishing Tip is going to discuss the basic equipment needed to fish a Trout stream.

Fishing Pole ~ I use an ultra light rod with a small spinning reel. You want ultra light or light action. It's important for your fishing pole to be light weight and sensitive. Trout are very leery and the first sign that something isn't right ....BAM he's outa there.....

Reel ~ Get one that hold up to 6lb test line. It doesn't have to be very big. All of your tackle needs to be light weight plus you don't have to cast very far in a stream.

Rigging your Pole

Line - 4lb or 6lb test - Trout are less apt to detect 4lb test line but 6lb test will work fine. If I plan to use my Trout rod for Crappie I will use 6lb test.

Hooks ~ Very small #10 - #14 - hooks come in a number of different colors these days. You will have to experiment to see what you like best. I always use gold hooks. When the sun hits the hook it gives off a flash of light that can trigger a striking response. Tie the hook to your line...do not use a swivel.

Split Shots - You will be using very small light bait for this type of fishing so you may need a small amount of weight to get your bait to the fish. This will very depending on the water conditions. Fishing fast moving rapids will require a larger weight like a # 5 a slow moving creek or still water next to the rapids will require smaller split shots like # 3/0 or #7. It may be necessary to change the weight for the different conditions as you walk up the creek. Place the split shot 6" to 8" from the hook.

Small Stream Fishing Attire

Boots ~ If you know the area you are fishing you will know what type of boots you will need. Sometimes you can just walk along the shore. If not you may need a good pair of waders. Personally give me an old wore out pair of creek sneaks and a pair of shorts and I'm all set.

Clothes ~ Believe it or not... just like hunting...it's better to camouflage yourself. No...I don't mean paint your face with camo paint. As I said earlier trout are very leery and skiddish. Bright colors will tend to alert them and send them off and running much faster than dull, dark colors will.

Fishing Vest ~ A vest makes it much easier to carry all your fishing tackle right with you. It will also help you eliminate a lot of movement in the stream by allowing you to change bait, split shots, re-hook etc. without moving.

OK your almost ready to go fishing.

Trout Fishing Tips ~ Choosing The Right Bait / Lures

When it comes to Trout Fishing I like using natural live bait a lot more than artificial lures. Once again like the fishing gear you have so many different kinds of bait and lures on the market how do you choose?

Well...the best part about this type of fishing is.....the simpler... the more natural... the better.

You don't even have to spend money on bait if you don't want...you don't even have to go to the store. Actually I've gone trout fishing without any bait before. I either dug up some earthworms or caught some small grass hoppers or crayfish. Which brings me to the best bait to use for stream fishing trout, or at least the best as far as I'm concerned.

LIVE BAIT

Earthworms....they are about 1 1/2 " to 2" long and Trout love um. Hook your worm from the tip of the head down about 1/4" so the tail just hangs. Make it look natural then get ready.

Grasshoppers...look for small Grasshoppers about 3/4 " to 1" long. Hook them just behind the head down the top of the back. You can fish these guys like a dry fly. Throw them out without any split shots and they will float on top of the water. Trout can't resist.

Crayfish...again use small crayfish about 1" long. You can hook these bad boys in the tail or in the back. They will swim to the bottom and crawl under a rock if you let them. Soft shelled crayfish are the best.

Night walkers...will also work but only use about 1/2" to 3/4" piece. Fish these like the earthworm.

LURES

Mepps Spinners - Size 0,1 or 2 take 4 or 5 of assorted sizes and colors.

Little Cleo Spoons - Size 1/8 , 1/16 & 1/4 oz. again assorted sizes and colors

Phoebe Spoon - size 1/8, 1/6 & 1/4 oz bring a couple different sizes and colors. This one has been a favorite of mine since I was a young kid riding my bike to my favorite fishing hole. It also works very well for Bass just use a larger size.

And don't forget to bring a stringer.........your going to need it.

Don't think you need to take all of these baits and lures to the stream with you. Remember...you are going to do a lot of walking so you want to travel light.

Tackle stores sell all kinds of plastic boxes with dividers that are easy to carry.

Now your ready to go fishing

Trout Fishing Tips ~ Fishing With Ken

Okay.......Let's go Fishin

Let's walk up the stream for our last Trout Fishing Tip

Once we get to the stream we are going to walk up stream. When Trout are feeding they will always face upstream so they can catch the food as it flows down stream with the current.

Reading the stream - as we walk up the stream we are going to look upstream for places where Trout will most likely be.

Trout like to feed in the rapids as mentioned above

Look for calm pools just off the rapids, these pools may be very small, most people would bypass them and not even notice. Finding these little place Trout like to hang out is what will help you catch more fish.

Look for rocks on the bank or large rocks in the stream

Look for logs on the bank or in the water

Also look for surfacing Trout. In this case you may want to try a grass hopper, Dry Fly or one of your lures.

Once we find an area that looks like it may be holding Trout we are going to plan our attack. If you are using any of the live baits mentioned you will want to cast above the fish and let it float down stream naturally. Cast into and around that spot 7 or 8 times before moving on. Make sure you have 7 or 8 good cast. This may take some practice if you are a beginner.

This is when it gets exciting. If you get a hit and the Trout doesn't commit .....cast again.....the game is on....be very still..... now it's between you and the fish. It's up to you to be patient and out smart the fish. It's one on one.....the game is on....can you beat the fish?
