He was drafted by the Steelers 16th overall in the 2003 NFL Draft. He played college football at the University of Southern California.

Troy Polamalu's College Carreer
USC Defensive Back
Troy Polamalu was a three year starter at USC. He was drafted by the Pittsburg Steelers with their first round pick in 2003 providing an immediate impact to the Steelers defensive backfield. In fact Pittsburg needed Polamalu so badly that they traded their first, third and sixth round picks to move up from their twenty seventh pick to the Chief's sixteenth draft pick to claim Troy.While at USC, Polamalu was a feared hitter and a team leader from his inspiring play. He was both an excellent pass coverer and run stopper.
Troy was selected an All American and All Conference in both his junior and senior seasons. During his senior year, he registered 68 tackles, 1 interception, 4 pass defenses, and 12 tackles for a loss. Troy was also one of three finalist for the 2002 Thorpe Award and was regarded as USC's best defensive back since Ronnie Lott.
