Tara Robertson Pottery

A committed stay-at-home mother and potter, Tara Robertson creates her unique artwork in her home studio.  Her pottery is all hand-built, with vessels painstakingly formed from long coils or slabs of clay pinched together.  A single vessel can take days or months to complete.

Inspiration for Tara's work comes from an eclectic array of sources; her active little daughter, numerous houseplants, the hills around her house, friends' work at the lab where she is a teacher's assistant, and textured wall treatments.  Her new series reflect her willingness to push the clay in new directions and her love of whimsical shapes

Artistic Philosophy

"Creativity is allowing yourself to make mistakes. Art is knowing which ones to keep. "

Some of Tara's Methods

Pit Firing
Beautiful effects can be created on the surface of a pot by simply wrapping it in "gunk" and burning it in an open pit fire. Here is Tara's complete pit firing method.
Achieving Brilliant Blues in Saggar Firing
Historically, Saggars were used to protect glazes and wares from the open flame, gases, and ash inherent in wood kilns. Saggars were constructed of large clay jars or brick boxes placed inside the kiln. Contemporary potters, instead of trying to protect the pot, actually fill these boxes with combustible materials. The fuming stuff leaves exciting marks on the pot. After finally finding how to get blue in a Saggar firing, Tara is sharing recipes and results.
Creating and Using Clay Stamps
You can never get enough texture on the ceramic surface! A great way to get unique impressions is by making and using individual clay stamps. The link above outlines methods and clay stamp making resources.
Painted Pots
A pot doesn't always neccessarily need to be glaze-fired to be finished. Here are some unconventional alternatives to glazing.

Wonderful lens, five stars!

Reminds me of my days in the clay when that was my livelihood.
