CDL Truck Drivers Protecting Themselves From Danger

THe World today is a dangerous place. Many truckers are advocating the choice to carry a gun. We at truth about trucking have evaluated the pro's and cons of this topic with much thought and consideration.

Professional over the road CDL truck drivers are a unique breed of men
and women. Strong, determined and masters of stamina, they keep the life
blood of our country moving. Truck driving isn't for everyone . . . in fact,
few can actually handle the daily stress and long, endless hours of being
out on the road. Long haul trucking is a rough life.
Along with this lifestyle come dangers. Driving through unfamiliar
territory late at night looking for your loading or unloading destination . . .
totally exhausted trying to find a place to park and you finally settle on the
one spot you can find: along the side of an exit off ramp . . . or broken
down out in the middle of nowhere . . . in this crazy world we all live in,
danger can be just around the next bend.

Should Truckers Have The Choice to Carry a Gun?

Truth About Trucking Opinion

I remember one night when I pulled into a truck stop in Jessup, Maryland
and literally fell right into bed. What seemed like a few minutes later, I
heard someone shouting, then some more yelling, and then . . . gun shots!
The shots rang out about three trucks down from where I was parked.
Seconds later, I was crawling into the driver's seat, pulling back out onto I-
95! To this day I don't know what occurred, and at the time I didn't want
to know.

At present, it is illegal for CDL truck drivers to carry guns
in the truck with them. I'm the first to say that there have been several
times when I would have felt much better had I had a handgun in my possession. But the question remains . . . should professional CDL truck
drivers running over the road be allowed to carry hand guns with them?

I find myself evaluating the pros and cons. The large majority of these men
and women are good, honest and hard-working adults. The main priority is providing a living for themselves and their families. Should they have to
face potential threats in crime infested areas without a means of protection, due to a few "bad apples" in the bunch?

Any professional trucker will tell you that when you are taking a high value shipment into an area of Detroit, Chicago, LA or New York City, etc., at 2:30 A.M., the potential of an attack is always probable. I recall several years ago when drivers were getting killed and their loads stolen while running across I-10 in South Texas along the Mexican border, where
you can drive a hundred miles and only see a few cars.
On the other hand, trucking is a hard, stressful vocation. Tempers can flair at the drop of a hat. All one has to do is listen to the CB radio and you
will hear constant fighting and berating by many drivers. One fight, one temper, and if one driver has a gun and other does not . . . ? For all the
good, law-abiding drivers out there I wish they could be allowed to carry protection. But looking at the insane world we live in now, I guess my vote on CDL truck drivers carrying guns would have to be . . .
NO.

Should Truckers be allowed to carry a gun?

Edward says:

I am a supporter of the 2nd Amendment and I have a CCDW from KY. While I think citizens should have a right to carry, I don't think there should be a law forbidding CDL drivers to carry. These are not government run agencies. We're talking private companies, right? I think it should be up to each company as to whether or not they allow their employees to carry, provided the employees met the requirements for licensing in their state.

john beck says:

hell yes, i was robbed in a truckstop . two ass holes knocked on my door while i was sleeping and stuck a gun in my face and made me give up my last ten dollars, were is a cop at that time ?????

james says:

hell yes we should be able to carry. If we all carried,I believe violence toward our brother and sister truckers would taper off somewhat.I have been driving since 1985.Previous to that I was a Deputy Sheriff for 10 years.I met a few brother officers that I didn't think it to be a good idea that they carried. It will always be the case that some should and some shouldn't carry.Training would help.I team with my wife.We haul munitions and explosives and have done so for the last 15 years. If they trust us with what we haul, they should trust us with a gun of our own in the cab.

annie bryant says:

my son is a trucker that just got out of jail in N.Y. after his hand gun was discovered on a routine inspection stop. If all the idiot criminals in N.Y. were as tightly scrutinized, there would be some justice. The truckers of this world, most of them, are the only ones that should be allowed to carry guns to protect themselves against the idiots of this world while they are delivering your groceries, fuel, and every other fucking thing that makes the world go round.

denis says:

Although I am not a truck driver, I am a strong supporter of the 2nd Amendment. I feel all responsible people should be allowed to carry. If they are not responsible, then they should not be driving 40,000+ lbs of truck. Who the hell are these politicians to tell us the people what to do, they are suppose to work for us. Truck driving can be very dangerous and you should have the right to protect yourself.

Steve says:

I'd like for you to point out a law that states truck drivers aren't allowed to carry a firearm in the truck. I have never been able to find one. There may be certian cities and states that don;t allow the carrying of a firearm, but as long as the driver stays away from those prohibited areas, it's not against the law.

As noted by Don, he has a permit accepted in 34 states, but still was prevented from entering trucking, on his own accord....more than likely due to the fact that the motor carriers won't allow it??

    Thanks, Allen

Hey, everybody...I thought I had corrected the "Federal Law" statement on this article, but must have missed a few. There is no Federal Law showing it is illegal to carry guns, but there are city, county and state laws that do. With interstate commerce, it would be impossible to be "legal" every mile you travel! Also, most motor carriers have the "rule" of NO GUNS ALLOWED...this is mainly due to the fact that shippers & receivers do not allow guns to be brought onto their property. You would have to know the law for EVERY city, county and state in the nation...this is impossible. I have seen drivers arrested at DOT scales and guns confiscated due to the "local" law...Do I agree with these laws? NO! Although there is NO Federal Law, you must keep in mind that there are city, county and state laws that prohibit the carrying of guns. thanks, Allen

I am a local truck driver. I deliver to fast food restaurants at night. I would like to carry a handgun. I don't because It is against company policy. I have searched on the DOT web sight looking for such a law and I can't find one. I would like to know where I can find where it says truckers can't carry handguns. someone please let me know. my email is merhunts@live.com.

Yes we should be able to carry in our semi's. For the most part we aren't on drugs with the exception of some morons. I have been driving truck now for 3 years and have passed about 7 random drug tests and I don't know of any drivers that are using drugs. So the drugs argument is out the window. As for not enough sleep to use proper judgement I would just like to point out we have enough judgement to drive up to 600 miles per day without killing anyone for the most part. As i am writing this I am thinking of all the drivers I know quite a few of them have been in accidents including myself but I can't think of one of them where the truck driver was at fault. I know they happen but I haven't met a driver yet that has caused an accident. What I am trying to say here is don't tell us drivers we don't use good judgement until you have drove in our seat. if we used the same judgement as about half of 4 wheelers there would be dead people on every mile of every interstate there is.

I think everyone should be allowed to carry a firearm with a Conceal Carry Permit. I think this definantly helps weed out the people that should not own or carry. However due to the fact that 90% of the driver's are lacking proper judgement from lack of sleep.. well that raises a whole other issue! I drive in a private vehicle up and down the road all the time. Believe it or not the only other driver's I have ever had issues with are Truck Driver's. They are quick to get road rage due to lack of sleep or drug use. I couldn't imagine if the guys that I've had problems with had a gun in the cab of the truck. Also another point to bring up is do you all remember the truck stop shootings that used to happen on a regular basis back in the 70's? I have very mixed feelings on this. My father is a truck driver and would be certain he and all the driver's he call's friends would be more than qualified to carry a handgun. But other's on the road that they know and I know as well.. no way!!

Not being able to carry a gun has prevented me from going into the trucking industry. I have a concealed carry permit accepted in 34 states. It's saved me and my family twice from becoming victims of violence on the road, never having to fire a shot. I was a police officer for 15 years.
