True dog stories are excellent ways to inspire people. In this way, people will come to realize how dogs are of great consequence in a human's life. One will realize how trustworthy dogs can be especially if they are well trained .

Because they possess remarkable senses and skills, dogs are fantastic canine creatures. Dogs can perform numerous tasks when they are properly trained.

In fact, dogs are considered to be an intelligent species. Anecdotal facts suggest that dogs have a high degree of intelligence. The capacity to learn basic obedience, however, and complicated behavior is inherent in all dogs. Owners must simply be more patient with some breeds than with others.

The meaning of "intelligence" in general, not only in reference to dogs, is hard to define. Some tests measure problem-solving abilities and others test the ability to learn compared to other dogs of the same age. Defining it for dogs is just as difficult.  The ability of the dog to do certain acts that cannot be done by other animals commonly defines dog intelligence. Dogs have the inbred ability to:

1) Think.

2) Learn new tricks, and they have

3) the ability to solve some problems like saving a person who is in harms way.

This dog intellect is, in fact, the main reason why people love to read true dog storiesand war dog stories. They used to think that these canine mammals were only animals and were not capable of responding when somebody was in trouble. Now that a lot of true dog stories have come to light to prove the reality of a dog's intelligence, many people now believe dogs can really be reliable enough to trust our lives to them.

Take for example  guide dogs. These "guide dogs" are trained to help other people who have visual and hearing limitations.

It takes a great deal of intelligence to learn an array of skills necessary to take on such great responsibility. Moreover, there are dogs that were able to serve their masters even up to the time that they need to rescue them from imminent danger.

There are a couple of examples of true dog stories and war dog stories that illustrate the intelligence of dogs.

The first remarkable example is one of a black and white English Pointer who had been donating blood for almost 11 years of his dog life. The donated blood was blood that was to be used on seriously injured dogs that were in need of a blood transfusion.

The second true dog story is the account of the two guide dogs that rescued their owners as they were caught inside the Towers during the September 11 tragedy.

This is a of two guide dogs that amazingly guided their owners out from the ferocity of the blazing trade center and were able to save their lives.

What is important is to train your dog when he is young at the puppy stage. Be consistent in your training and be clear in your commands to your dog. Finally it is probably best if everyone in your household takes part in training your dog to ensure consistency of your dog's behavior.

These true dog stories will touch the hearts of not only dog lovers but everybody who realizes that dogs know how to be of assistance others.

I am your dog

Author Unknown but appreciated

I Am Your Dog

(This true dog story is in honor of my dog "Tiny" who is no longer with us, but he was so happy, active and so full of life that his spirit is still with us. We miss you Tiny.)

I am your dog and I have a little something I'd like to whisper in your ear. I know that you humans lead busy lives. Some have to work, some have children to raise. It always seems like you are running here and there, often much too fast, often not noticing the truly grand things in life. Look down at me now, while you sit there at your computer. See the way my dark brown eyes look at yours? They are slightly cloudy now. That comes with age. The gray hairs are beginning to ring my soft muzzle.

You smile at me and I see love in your eyes. What do you see in mine? Do you see a spirit? A soul inside, who loves you as no other could in the world? A spirit that would forgive all trespasses of prior wrong doing for just a moment of your time? That is all I ask. To slow down, if even for a few minutes, to be with me. So many times you have been saddened by the words you read on that screen, of others of my kind passing. Sometimes we die young and oh so quickly. Sometimes we age so slowly before your eyes that you may not even seem to know until the very end, when we look at your with grizzled muzzles and cataract clouded eyes. Still the love is always there, even when we must take that long sleep to run free in a distant land.

Tony's Dogs

I have been thinking a lot lately about dogs and what valuable gifts of unconditional love they bring to us humans as a no cost gift.

My grandson Tony, who lived with us, was killed at the age of 23 this year. He loved dogs although he was allergic to them. Still he cared for them so much he began to breed them. After he passed, his good friend and our next door neighbor adopted one of his dogs. The dog is an American Terrier commonly known as a "pit bull terrier". The dog is simply beautiful and I have never seen a dog of his stature. He is a golden brown with a massive head. He looks like a miniature lion. The dog stands with his paws on the fence with his enormous head above the fence every time we come out of the house. What a greeting!

At any rate, I have noticed that although dogs are speechless, if you remain quiet when in their presence you absorb learning from them that I can only describe as timeless, universal and "spiritual". This awareness has increased with me over time.

Well, just thought I would get that off my mind and out to you. Take care of your dog(s) and thank them for their silent gifts.

Kool K-9 Popsicle Retires

Here is a great true dog story about "Popsicle" from the US Custom's site.

After recovering from bite wounds on his head and neck, hypothermia, and dehydration at the Erie County Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals, the pit bull that would be named Popsicle was selected as a possible candidate for the U.S.
During an investigation of reports of gunfire in 1997, a Buffalo police officer opened an abandoned refrigerator and found a black garbage bag. He poked the bag with his flashlight and something in the bag started moving. At first he thought that there was a baby inside the bag. The "baby" turned out to be a 5-month-old puppy.

Customs Service canine enforcement program. Popsicle joined the ranks of other dogs nobody else wanted: dogs that dig up back yards, chew furniture, and are constantly on the go. Just the sort of dog Customs is looking for.

At the end of his training at the Canine Enforcement Training Center in Front Royal, Va., Popsicle went with his handler, J.J. Trevino, to work at the Pharr and Hidalgo bridges in Texas. While working at the Pharr bridge, Popsicle alerted to drugs in a tractor trailer. It turned out to be a ton and a half of cocaine with a street value of $139,605,000, the largest cocaine seizure in the McAllen area in 10 years.

Popsicle and J.J. worked together for a couple of months before Popsicle was returned to Front Royal for additional training. At Front Royal, he was teamed with Rudy Carr, a handler looking for a new canine partner.

Popsicle and Rudy graduated and went to work at the Port of Roma, Tex. While working in Roma, Popsicle made 24 seizures of Marijuana: 12,080 pounds with a street value of $640,000; one cocaine seizure of 148 pounds worth $6,719,200; and two currency seizures with a total value of $65,144.

Popsicle and Rudy have done more than work hard detecting drugs, they've also made numerous public relations and outreach appearances. Popsicle is a dog who overcame his abusive start in life and had his chance to get back at the crooks. While working at Roma, Popsicle suffered a career ending injury to his knee - an injury that required surgery. Popsicle is now retired and is living a life of leisure at Rudy's house. "Only we know that he's a pit bull," says Carr, "he thinks he's a cocker spaniel."

Belker's Inspirational Story

Being a veterinarian, I had been called to examine a ten-year old Irish Wolfhound named Belker. The dog's owners, Ron, his wife, Lisa, and their little boy, Shane, were all very attached to Belker and they were hoping for a miracle. I examined Belker and found he was dying of cancer. I told the family we couldn't do anything for Belker, and offered to perform the euthanasia procedure for the old dog in their home. As we made arrangements, Ron and Lisa told me they thought it would be good for the four-year old Shane to observe the procedure. They felt as though Shane might learn something from the experience. The next day, I felt the familiar catch in my throat as Belker's family surrounded him. Shane seemed so calm, petting the old dog for the last time, that I wondered if he understood what was going on. Within a few minutes, Belker slipped peacefully away. The little boy seemed to accept Belker's passing without any difficulty or confusion. We sat together for a while after Belker's death, wondering aloud about the sad fact that animal lives are shorter than human lives. Shane, who had been listening quietly, piped up, "I know why." Startled, we all turned to him. What came out of his mouth next stunned me. I'd never heard a more comforting explanation. He said, "People are born so that they can learn how to live a good life - like loving everybody all the time and being nice, right?" The four- year-old continued, "Well, dogs already know how to do that, so they don't have to stay as long."

The Hope A Dog Can Give: Juno's Story

- By Susan Cava

I wanted a poodle; I got a pit bull instead. Standing in the scant dog run at an NYC pound, a volunteer came out with a fawn colored 65lb, adult female Pit Bull mix that was far too regal to be homeless let alone on death row. The dog looked at me with desperation and hope while the volunteer calmly looked at me and said in her broken English, "You come here and save one, then it's hope for all the others." This was the dog I was meant to have, she found me.

Juno, named after the Roman goddess who protected women, was the best decision I ever made I had a buddy, I was exercising, I was more responsible I was a better person.

When Juno ruptured two discs in her back and the doctors said I could euthanize her or take a chance on surgery, what choice did I have?

She went through three grueling back surgeries but remained paralyzed in her back legs. Despite exercise, hydrotherapy and a wheelchair/doggy cart (which she seemed to find insulting) there were still no results. It was both physically and emotionally taxing on everyone involved to care for an eighty pound pit bull who couldn't walk. Yet it brought out such profound kindness in people; my mother would position Juno on her bed so the sun shining through the window would hit her. My boyfriend would hoist all eighty pounds of her at midnight so she could go to the bathroom outside and not have the indignity of soiling herself. My father would drive us to hydrotherapy at eight a.m. on a Saturday and adamantly proclaim that Juno would walk again.

After eight months of this I began to lose hope. Yet on a cold winter night after I hoisted her to urinate outside, she walked herself back indoors as though it was the most natural thing she could do. Remarkably and rather quickly her walking improved, soon to the point where she was back on a leash walking Manhattan with her pride restored.

Juno, now twelve years old, is still walking but extremely slowly and a bit palsied, but walking. Every single person who stops to pet her and comment on her funny little walk, beam when I tell them that she did not walk and now she does. Only her veterinarian remains confused as to why she is walking and will not accept the reason I am sure of hope.

No Cocoa Mulch if You Have a Pet.

Theobromine is in all chocolate, especially dark or baker's chocolate is toxic to dogs.

Cocoa MulchPlease tell every dog or cat owner you know.. Even if you don't have a pet, please pass this to those who do.
Over the weekend, the doting owner of two young lab mixes purchased Cocoa Mulch from Target to use in their garden. The dogs loved the way it smelled and it was advertised to keep cats away from their garden. Their dog (Calypso) decided the mulch smelled good enough to eat and devoured a large helping. She vomited a few times which was typical when she eats something new but wasn't acting lethargic in any way. The next day, Mom woke up and took Calypso out for her morning walk . Half way through the walk, she had a seizure and died instantly.

Although the mulch had NO warnings printed on the label, upon further investigation on the company's web site,

this product is HIGHLY toxic to dogs and cats.

Cocoa Mulch is manufactured by Hershey's, and they claim that "It is true that studies have shown that 50% of the dogs that eat Cocoa Mulch can suffer physical harm to a variety of degrees (depending on each individual dog). However, 98% of all dogs won't eat it."
*Snopes site gives the following information:http://www.snopes.com/critters/crusader/cocoamulch.asp *

Cocoa Mulch, which is sold by Home Depot, Foreman's Garden Supply and other Garden supply stores contains a lethal ingredient called 'Theobromine'. It is lethal to dogs and cats. It smells li ke chocolate and it really attracts dogs. They will ingest this stuff and die. Several deaths already occurred in the last 2-3 weeks.

Theobromine is in all chocolate, especially dark or baker's chocolate which is toxic to dogs. Cocoa bean shells contain potentially toxic quantities of theobromine, a xanthine compound similar in effects to caffeine and theophylline. A dog that ingested a lethal quantity of garden mulch made from cacao bean shells developed severe convulsions and died 17 hours later. Analysis of the stomach contents and the ingested cacao bean shells revealed the presence of lethal amounts of theobromine.

There's Something I've Been Meaning to Tell You

I may not be here tomorrow. I may not be here next week. Someday you will shed the water from your eyes that humans have when deep grief fills their souls, and you will be angry at yourself that you did not have just one more day with me. Because I love you so, your sorrow touches my spirit and grieves me. We have now together. So come sit down next to me here on the floor, and look deep into my eyes. What do you see? If you look hard and deep enough we will talk, you and I, heart to heart. Come to me not as an alpha, or as a trainer, or even as mom and dad. Come to me as a living soul and stroke my fur and let us look into one another's eyes and talk. I may tell you something about the fun of chasing a tennis ball, or I may tell you something profound about myself, or even about life in general. You decided to have me in your life because you wanted a soul to share such things with. Someone very different from you; and here I am. I am a dog, but I am alive. I feel emotion, I feel physical senses, and I can revel in the differences of our spirits and souls. I do not think of you as a dog on two feet; I know what you are. You are human, in all your quirkiness, and I love you still.

Now, come sit with me on the floor. Enter my world, and let time slow down if only for 15 minutes. Look deep into my eyes and whisper into my ears. Speak with your heart and with your joy, and I will know your true self. We may not have tomorrow, and life is so very short.

Love,
Your Dog

Lassie Come Home

Eric Mowbray Knight (1897 - 1943)

We were allowed to reprint the article below by the gracious permission of James Donaldson Collins at: http://www.jamescollins.org/index.html (James has a stunning site that is a must visit -quite unique and refreshing.)

The article below is a true dog story about the creator of one of the most famous dogs in history - "Lassie". Read and enjoy. It brought back fond memories of the television show.

By Gayle Kaye

As most people are aware, it was Eric Knight who created the captivating canine character, "Lassie". Even though he was the author of many fine books, he will always best be remembered for the classic story of a boy and his dog, titled "Lassie Come-Home".

Lassie has been the most endearing and enduring of all the canine stars. The fact that she is still going strong after 60 years, is testament to both her popularity and mass appeal. When Eric Knight created this character in 1938, he couldn't have known that it would be the beginning of a phenomenon that would outlive him by more than 50 years.

Eric Knight was one of those people had he lived a longer life, there's no telling what else he might have accomplished. As it was, his short life of 45 years was rich and full. He was born on April 10, 1897 in Yorkshire, England. His father, a diamond merchant, deserted the family for South Africa when Eric was quite young. His mother remarried an American and eventually settled in this country, where Eric soon joined her at the age of fifteen. He graduated from the Cambridge School of Latin in Massachusetts and also pursued art at the New York National Academy of design. Later he lectured at the University of Iowa. His first love was newspaper work and over the years he worked for several. He started as a copy boy and worked his way up to writing feature articles for the Syndicate Bureau. He was also a respected film critic for the Philadelphia Public Ledger. For a short time, he even dabbled in film writing in Hollywood, where he became a favorite of the legendary filmmaker, Frank Capra. However, his greatest and most over whelming desire was to write a great American novel.

Upon marrying his wife Jere, they settled on a farm in Pennsylvania, where they had many dogs, including Collies. Shortly thereafter, they gave up the farm and the dogs, so they could move to Hollywood, where Eric could pursue a film writing career. They took one small Terrier dog, but shortly after arriving in California, he was hit and killed by a car. (ctn'd)

Lassie Come Home - continued

To help ease the sorrow, Eric purchased a female Collie puppy that was to be a Christmas gift to his wife. It quickly became apparent that the puppy was to be no one else's dog, but Eric's! The mahogany sable puppy was named "Toots", after the popular song, "Okay Toots".

She was not a show Collie, by any stretch of the imagination, but she possessed the traits that Collies have become famous for.....intelligence, love and devotion. Eric spent every spare moment training her and was continually amazed by her intelligence and eagerness to learn. Her repertoire of tricks became famous the country over, while traveling together doing book tours. Eric delighted in showing her off, even stating that she understood many languages, when actually she had been expertly trained in hand signals! The two of them became inseparable. When Eric was away, "Toots" would sit patiently, by the stone wall in the front of their house, awaiting her master's return. Eric obviously felt a great love for this dog and somewhere in the back of his mind, a possible story was already looming, with Toots as the main inspiration.

Further inspiration came while on a trip to his English homeland, during the Great Depression. It was a time during which the entire country was enduring hard times, forcing many people to sell their belongings, including beloved dogs. Following his return home, he and Jere relocated to New York and it was here that he actually wrote the story "Lassie Come-Home." It was basically a simple story, combining a dog's love and devotion, with that of the hard times of a Yorkshire family. Much of the story was drawn from his own childhood memories in England. The end result was a beautifully written classic that endures to this day! The short story first appeared in the December 17, 1938 issue of the Saturday Evening Post. It was so popular, that the John C. Winston Publishing Company picked up publication rights.

Two years later the book was published and became a popular best seller. Simply put, it was the story of a loyal Collie who crossed hundreds of miles of rugged terrain to return home to the boy she loved. Intertwined with this, was the much bigger story of a family's fall on hard times. The values of honesty, trustworthiness and devotion leap out at you on every page. The story has had immense world wide appeal and has endured all these years, proving the talents of Eric as a gifted story teller! (ctn'd)

Lassie Come Home - continued

All in all, it has been published in over 25 languages and has remained continuously in print, in various editions throughout the years. Today it is considered a classic.

Coupled with several other perfectly timed events, such as the discovery of an errant Collie named "Pal" and his subsequent training by Rudd Weatherwax, the book led the way for what was to become an overnight sensation. In 1942 MGM purchased the movie rights and the rest is history. The movie "Lassie Come Home" was released in 1943 and was a huge success. It went onto inspire seven other movies, a radio show, a long running television show, countless books and artifacts, and a great love for this dog called Lassie.

Unfortunately, Eric did not live long enough to witness the legend he created. He visited the movie set of "Lassie Come Home" in 1942, where he met the original Lassie, but he never saw the finished product. He was a major in the United States Army and served in two world wars. In 1943, during World War II, he was killed in action while on board a transport plane that crashed in the jungles of Dutch Guiana. At the time, it was one of the worst air disasters in American Aviation History. The true cause remains a mystery!

Eric wrote several other books, such as, "The Happy Land", "Invitation To Life" and "The Flying Yorkshireman". In fact, at the time of his death, "This Above All", was proving to be a best seller. Ironically it probably never occurred to him, that he would forever be remembered for the wonderful story of a young boy and his Collie. It has withstood the test of time and has proven to be his most lasting contribution.

Thanks to Eric Knight, Collies and the character "Lassie" will forever be linked. How very lucky the breed has been, to have such a wonderful influence representing them and we have Eric Knight to thank for it! In 1994, proof of Lassie's positive breed influence came when Eric Knight was admitted to the Collie Club of America Quarter Century Club Hall of Fame!
