Trunk or Treating in Pendleton SC
Every Halloween our Church, Pendleton United Methodist Church, sponsors "Trunk or Treating" in Pendleton, SC. The volunteers ask community members to bring their cars on the square or at the church and to have their trunks decorated so the children can come by and get their treats out of the trunk. It is open to everyone and the children come in costume. It seems to get bigger and better every year. There are really some creative people out there and it is amazing what they can come up with to make the trunk of a car look inviting.

What exactly is Trick or Treating
With the concern for safety becoming more and more, this tradition is taking on new twist such as Trunk or Treating which is sometimes called Halloween Tailgating.
Trick-or-treating is a custom for children on Halloween. Children proceed in costume from house to house, asking for treats such as candy, or sometimes money, with the question, "Trick or treat?" The "trick" is an idle threat to perform mischief on the homeowners or their property, such as eggs and flour being thrown at householders' windows if no treat is given.
In the United States and Canada, trick-or-treating is now one of the main traditions of Halloween and it has become socially expected that if one lives in a neighborhood with children one should purchase treats in preparation for trick-or-treaters. The National Confectioners Association reported in 2005 that 80 percent of adults in the United States planned to give out confectionery to trick-or-treaters,Trick-or-treaters can expect Mom or Dad's favorites in their bags this year, National Confectioners Association, 2005. and that 93 percent of children planned to go trick-or-treating.Fun Facts: Halloween, National Confectioners Association, 2004. The tradition of going from door to door receiving food already existed in Britain and Ireland, in the form of souling, where children and poor people would sing and say prayers for the dead in return for cakes. Guising ? children disguised in costumes going from door to door for food and coins ? also predates Trick or treat, and was traditional at Halloween in late 19th century Scotland and Ireland. While going from door to door has remained popular among Scots and Irish, the North American custom of saying "trick or treat" has become common. The activity is done in the United States, United Kingdom, Canada, Ireland, Puerto Rico, and northwestern and central Mexico (where it is called calaverita, spanish for "little skull"; instead of "trick or treat", children ask ¿me da mi calaverita?, "can you give me my little skull?"). In the last twenty years, amid controversy, the custom has spread to other countries, such as Italy, Australia and New Zealand, possibly due to the ubiquity of U.S. American TV shows and movies in those countries.
What Exactly Is "Trunk or Treating"?
A Fun Alternative or Addition to Trick or Treating

"Trunk or Treating" has gained in popularity in recent years as more and more parents are afraid for their children to go door to door. It is sometimes called Halloween Tailgate which is a fun name, too.
There are so many carnivals and Church events on Halloween night that our church has Trunk or Treating the Sunday before Halloween. This gives the children another day to wear their costumes. Our local High School had Trunk or Treat at the High School football game this year since it fell on a Friday. I heard that was lots of fun, too!
My trunk (a couple of years ago) - a big Smiley Face filled with candy
Smiley Face Trunk

A friend and I worked on this one and had a great time. I took some old black sheets that were left over from my son's college days and then used a big Smiley Face Monitor Cover. Do you remember those? When PCs first became popular, it was fun to decorate it and my sister sent me this one. I knew not to throw it away........it would come in handy someday!

2008 Trunk or Treat
We had a great time!

Last year I had asked the Squidoo Community to make suggestions for how I should decorate my trunk. My sister Joan had the best idea. She said that I should use "Zeke". "Zeke" is an old hillbilly "man" that our friends, the Quattlebaums, used to have sitting out front of their Antique Shop. Zeke has been around for a long time and there are lots of fun stories about him. We used to borrow him and put him on the front porch of my dad's house for our family Thanksgiving. Our neighbors borrowed them one year because their daughter had asked for a man for Christmas. They put Zeke under the tree with her name on him. He was at a Honey Do party given for our son with the name of his imaginary friend on him. So you see old Zeke is a part of Pendleton and Last year he was at Trunk or Treat.

Squidoo Lens Of The Day Blog
Boo!
The last day of September marked the deadline for applying to the 3rd quarter of the rocking Giant Squids program. As you know, Giants are our VIP lensmasters, people who not only make astonishingly great lenses, but who also make lots of them. It's not just quantity, and it's not just quality... it's both. That's what knocks our socks off.
To help motivate potential Giants to reach the requisite 50 amazing lenses (and have a little fun along the way) our Giant Squid Greeters ran a Halloween challenge, just for people who were hoping to stretch their legs and apply to the Giant Squids program.
The results were frightful. In Halloweenspeak, that's a good thing.
Here's the winning lens, all about Eyeball Recipes. (No, not using eyeballs as an ingredient).

Trunk or Treat 08 was a Big Success!
About 200 children showed up in costume.

Pendleton United Methodist Church does a great community service by providing Trunk or Treat on the square or at the church. All the children seemed to be having a great time and we sure did appreciate all the people who came with their decorated trunks and lots of candy. We had 20 trunks that were very clever and I think it is safe to say that A GOOD TIME WAS HAD BY ALL!
This ought to help with your decorating ideas.

- YES! Our community does it at the local high school (Swedesboro, NJ) every year. Unfortuneately, I missed it this year with my two foster sons as we had another Halloween party to attend. In years past we've had a blast and it does seem to be getting more popular every year with more folks tailgating and treating the kids to elaborate games and such. It is a safe alternative for families who want to have the trick or treating experience in a safer setting during daylight hours. great lens - 5 stars !

- Boy, I need to visit Pendleton! You all do some of the most fun things. This sounds like a fantastic idea! Not only is it safer, but the adults can get more involved and have some extra fun for themselves. Plus it's like trick or treating and a Halloween party all rolled up in one! Fantastic.

- A local church did this for the community last Halloween here in New Zealand, where trick or treating isn't very popular. Trunk or treat was quite a well attended event, although I don't think any of the trunks were decorated. I thought it was just a NZ thing. I lensrolled as well.
