About this Lens
Got Milk?
If you live in the wonderful world of Western society then my guess is yes. Milk on its own, milk on cereals, milk in our drinks, cream on our puddings, cheese in our sandwiches, the white stuff is everywhere. I'd bet that a lot of you reading this are salivating just thinking about a nice warm glass of - But wait, hang on, why has he started talking about milk? Milk is healthy! It's the main source of calcium! It helps us grow big and strong! So then what's wrong with milk? If you're asking any of these questions then you'd better prepare yourself for a shock. What's wrong with milk? What isn't! Here's a thought...
Cow milk is for calves, baby cows - not baby humans, not adult humansEverything that we have been led to believe about milk is either outright false or twisted to sound beneficial to our wellbeing. Ask yourself, 'from where did I learn all these things about good 'ol cow's milk?' Oh yeah...the Milk Marketing Board and...the honest folk in the Government.
Humans are the only mammals on Earth that drink milk after they have been weaned off their mother, no other animal consumes milk from it's mother or from another animal past babyhood.
Now before you pipe up and shout 'What about cats and hedgehogs?' Consider who controls their diet. Who sticks it under their noses in an oh-so appealing saucer? Next time you walk past some grazing cows and you see cats suckling at their bovine bits, let me know.
The hormones and antibiotics fed to cattle which subsequently end up in milk have been linked to ovarian and breast cancers in women as well as atherosclerosis and heart disease in adults.
Milk contaminated by the use of pesticides and insecticides has lead to concerns about asthma, intestinal bleeding, colic, ear and tonsillar infections, bedwetting and allergies in children.
Do have a taste for the White Stuff?
But what about Pasteurisation? Doesn't that clear out all the nasties that go into Milk?
We've all heard pasteurisation is the process that supposedly makes milk 'pure' and advertisers waste no time in making this known to us. However heat-treating the milk in this way only kills harmful bacteria and the vast assortment of chemicals and foreign substances are left in the mix to be packed away and sent to your nearest supermarket. Pasteurisation also denatures and destroys many of the enzymes in the milk, lowering the usable vitamin content by 50%+.So what's the point of pasteurisation in the first place? Extended shelf life of course, which no doubt helps pay for Mr. Milk Industry man's new Jag. UHT (Ultra Heat-Treated) is the daddy of pasteurised milk and could probably live out the next ice age. Not that you'd want to drink it in the first place I hope.
Also, Milk contains blood and pus from the cow
Lovely stuff I'm sure you'll agree but wait, there's more!
Calcium is vital for the neutralisation of acidic substances that build up in the body, this is its purpose. Consuming milk and dairy products will significantly increase acidity in the body. To counteract this and neutralise the acidic materials, calcium, other minerals and water are used to level out the pH balance and restore homeostasis. Therefore drinking milk actually decreases your body's stores of calcium! This valuable mineral is leeched out of our bones, reducing their mass, in an effort to maintain balance!
Case-In I throw up...
Milk contains the protein casein; this casein is chemically bound to the calcium in milkIn the process of digestion, enzymes are used to literally break apart the bonds between different substances so that they can be utilised efficiently.
This is where the problem lies and this is the information that isn't used in milk advertising campaigns. After we have been weaned, around 3 or 4 years of age, the specific enzymes (Renin and Lactase) used to split the casein and calcium is no longer produced in most of us rendering our bodies incapable of digesting milk effectively.
So not only does milk reduce our calcium reserves, but also what calcium there is in the white stuff (remember that the majority of dairy products are pasteurised, homogenised, skimmed etc, all lowering the calcium content) is totally inaccessible!
Oh, and just so you know...
Casein is the base for one of the strongest wood glues and cow's milk has over 300 times more casein than human milk
This sticky casein clogs up our intestines, prevents our digestive system from absorbing nutrients and fills our bodies with mucus. Lovely jubbly.

Dairy products are not vital for good bone health
The Chinese used to consume no dairy products. What did they have to show for it? One of the lowest rates of osteoporosis in the world. Coincidence you say? Well topping the charts of dairy product consumption and production stand Finland and the almighty US. Both rife with bone diseases.Fruit and vegetables are the best source of calcium and here, it is in a format that is easily digested
With all this in mind we might as well be downing a cup of contaminated pond water because dairy produce is literally a poison. A slow acting poison that indeed kills, albeit over a long period of time. The picture I have painted here is by no means the full story and there is a lot more to be found on the subject of dairy consumption and its repercussions.
I am not saying that you should never consume milk, cream and cheese ever again, just don't buy into all the hype that views dairy products not just as an innocent and enjoyable food source but one that is necessary to our physical health.
