Try Scuba Diving
There are a number of ways to try SCUBA. Most Dive Centers such as Sea Lions Dive Center have opportunities to try scuba. At resorts they will often have in introductory experience often called a resort course.
Try SCUBA at a pool
Sea Lions Dive Center offers try scuba one evening a month
At Sea Lions Dive Center we offer Try SCUBA once a month at the Taylor YMCA in Elgin. In this class you will get an opportunity to try on scuba gear in the pool and we will teach you some of the most basic SCUBA diving skills. Those skills will likely include how to breath through a regulator under water, how to recover a regulator if it gets knocked out of your mouth, how to clear water from your mask, how to swim with SCUBA gear, how to read a pressure gauge and tell your instructor how much air you have left, how to communicate with some of the hand signals we use when diving, and how to clear your ears to compensate for the water pressure.
If all goes well we will decent to the bottom of the pool and get a chance to swim and practice your new skills.
Resort Course SCUBA Experience
Many resorts offer an introduction to SCUBA experience. This experience has different names in different locations but is most often referred to as a resort course. The experience will vary by location but most often will include a short pool training session similar to the try SCUBA detailed above and a short shallow open water dive with an instructor.
Because it is just an experience and not a class you will be limited to water usually less that twenty feet deep. You can also normally expect to spend between twenty minutes and a half and hour on the dive.
When signing up for these courses we highly recommend you look for a dive operation affiliated with one of the major certifying agencies such as the Professional Association of Dive Instructors (PADI) which is the largest certifying agency in the world.
