Home Built Wind Turbines Are A Great Source To Reduce Energy Use

The most cost effective turbines, for home use, are the ones you make yourself.

If you DIY your own system you'll save thousands. You can achieve the same results as commercial turbines.

The turbines aren't complicated to make.
When you break them down, their quite simple.
Knowing what materials to use is the hardest part.

You can go three ways with turbines.

  1. You can buy a commercial wind turbine and recoup your investment within 25 years.

  2. You can create a magnetic coil generator from scratch and assemble your turbine. This will cost around $200 and is worth it.

  3. You can create a simple to make PVC turbine for around $50

Turbines For Home Use Ooops Moment...

You don't have to do this, but it takes efficiency up a notch.

I learned about batteries the hard way... I tried using SLI ( regular 12v car batteries ) to store the excess energy I was getting from my turbines. I have a few turbines one of them is admittedly a monstrosity... but I love it, it's an awesome energy producer. Anyway I fried my battery bank. My monstrous turbine, nicknamed by my wife ( Frankenmill ), charged the SLI batteries too quickly, and then when I would draw from them, they would deplete quickly.

This cycle literally ate all the lead in the batteries. They weren't deep cycle batteries that are MUCH more suitable for this type of application. I knew better but didn't think they would fail so fast. I'm now using forklift batteries and they work great. Lessen learned...

If your not hooked up to a grid, need electricity, or want to supplement your own electricity, you can DIY a system and save a lot of expense. Building turbines for home use is a great project that can be a worthwhile investment. I use renewable energy to supplement 48% to 100% of my electrical use, and it's an awesomely rewarding feeling.

The Best Turbines For Home Use

Even though my larger turbine gives me more power ,when it's spinning, it's not the most practical for home use.

I mean that my large turbine starts generating at 8mph winds, while the smaller turbines start at half that speed 4mph. So the question is ...

The tortuous or the hare?

Even though Frankenmill generates a ton of electricity, it doesn't run as frequently as the other turbines. Turbines produce the most electricity when there are no obstacles to block their wind. This means having to mount them higher than the surrounding obstacles. But I've found that the smaller turbines do much better than the larger turbines, unless they are mounted very high up.

The smaller turbines are perfect for home use and don't have to be mounted insanely high, to be productive. Taking the maintenance and electrical production into account I'd say that the smaller turbines are perfect for home use. You can build great little turbines for home use that operate at minimal start speed and continually pump out. I'd just make a few of them. Their not expensive to make at all. Just remember to untwist your electrical cord more often if you have a small turbine close to the ground, and enjoy your free electricity.
