The Turkey's Year
What time is it in Turkey Time?

Spring Turkey......................................... Summer Turkey Eggs

Fall Turkeys.......................................................Winter Turkey Tracks
Can you tell what time of the year it is by observing turkeys?
During the fall you will see some flocks of turkeys are grouped by age and sex. The turkeys will be eating seeds in preparation for the long winter when food can be scarce. In winter one can often find Turkey tracks in clearings or on the edge of the woods.

There are turkeys living in the wild throughout the whole year. We may think of turkeys mostly in the fall as Thanksgiving approaches but let's take some time to think about what turkeys are up to throughout the rest of the year.

Learn all about turkeys. When you see a turkey in the wild can you tell what time of year it is?
Jim Arnosky is one of my favorite authors and his book, All About Turkeys is no exception. I like to read books about turkeys with the children, write down lists of everything they know about turkeys and then try to spend so time outside watching the wild turkeys that nest and feed in our field. In winter we watch for their tracks and in early summer sometimes find turkey nests.

Did you know that turkeys make many different sounds? If you listen carefully you may be able to decipher what the turkeys are trying to communicate. Listen to the recording made by the National Wildlife Foundation. Can you imitate those calls? During circle time, play What's the Turkey Talking About? Everyone closes their eyes and one child at a time imitates a certain call. Whoever guesses correctly is the next player.

Draw an outline of a turkey with a large round belly. Make a clock face on the belly. For the hour hand, make a feather shape as a spinner. This should be big enough for the whole class to see.

Spin the feather as you sing and chant:
It's Turkey Time! It's Turkey Time!
Spin the Feather. Tell the Time.
It's Turkey Time! It's Turkey Time!
Spin the Feather. Tell the Time.
Now chant the hours by saying "Gobble for each hour."
Then say the time and start the chant again.

Turkeys learn to Tell Time

As Thanksgiving time approaches, children are learning to tell time. We practice counting by fives on the clock as we point to each number using a turkey feather. Five, ten, fifteen, twenty, twenty-five, thirty .... fifty-five; The Turkey says it's Ten O'Clock!
Then we go around the clock again for Eleven O'clock etc. until we have chanted two or three hours more.
Here are some followup activities for independent seat work or to add to a Turkey Time themed Literacy Bag.

Turkeys for the Bulletin Board

Children from Miss Renee's class made A pattern of turkeys by mounting Coffee Filter turkeys on alternating colors of construction paper to form a pattern.
Coffee Filter turkey- Children dye coffee filters with food coloring and water and then add a turkey head pattern.
The Turkey Head pattern can be made from the outline of a pear.
Use a gallon milk jug to make templates for the children to draw around. The beak can be made from small yellow triangles.

Turkey Feather Count
Time to Count the Turkey Feathers
)

- Lesson Exchange: Turkey Feather Count (Pre-School, Mathematics)
- Take a shoebox and lid and tape lid on. Next cut up a brown paper bag to cover the box. Using a razor blade cut a hole in the top of the box large enough for a preschooler to reach in.
Next using construction paper make a turkey's head and attach to the box. Cut two brown paper wings and attach to the sides of the box. For the feathers, I used 12 craft sticks. You
can paint them if you like or use them as is.
On the top of the box use a razor blade to cut 3 rows of 4 slits (total of 12 slits). (where the feathers would be on a turkey)
Make the slits as wide as your craft sticks. Next cut a piece of white tag board into 12 cards.
Write on each card the numbers 1-12. Place the cards in the hole of the box.

Up in the branches,

Think about all the ways we use to tell time.
Of course there are watches and clocks but what about the amount of time it takes for corn to grow to feed the turkey and then for the turkey to grow big enough for us to eat on Thanksgiving.
What other ways do we measure time?

Time can be measured in many ways such as the length of time it takes for corn to grow big enough for turkeys or raccoons to eat.

History of Turkeys

Wild turkeys are dependent on a varied habitat consisting of hardwood and mixed forests. In the 1800s, Vermont's wild turkeys were pushed to extinction due to extensive clearing of these forests and the spread of agricultural lands.
They were first reintroduced in 1969 and fortunately have made a tremendous come back. They are now widespread in deciduous forests.

When his family moved to Vermont turkeys were plentiful. What has happened to the Vermont Turkey Population over Time? - Garner Rix and the Royalton Raid - 1780
- Garner Rix was just 12 when he moved with his father, pregnant mother, two sisters and three brothers from a farm in Connecticut to a log cabin on the banks of the White River, a place that would one day be called Royalton, Vermont. He helped his father dig stumps and built roads.
