What Time is it? It's Turkey Time!

Wild Turkeys nearly became extinct in the 1930's but times have changed and turkeys have benefited. Now turkeys are often found in fields and on the edge of the woods.

In this unit you will learn about Wild Turkeys, read turkey facts and stories, play some turkey games and do some turkey projects.

The turkeys will also help you learn to tell time. Turkey time, seasons, clocks, and the time to eat turkey.

So put on some feathers and practice your gobbling because it's Turkey Time...

The Turkey's Year

What time is it in Turkey Time?

The four seasons can be observed in turkeys. Did you notice that the male and female turkeys are together in the spring? They get together at this time in order to mate. Later on the female will lay eggs in an open field or on the edge of the woods. It would not be safe for turkey chicks to be born in a tree since turkeys are not adept at flying.

Can you tell what time of the year it is by observing turkeys?

During the fall you will see some flocks of turkeys are grouped by age and sex. The turkeys will be eating seeds in preparation for the long winter when food can be scarce. In winter one can often find Turkey tracks in clearings or on the edge of the woods.

Here in Connecticut, spring is a time when turkeys begin to call and display at the edge of my property. It is amazing how beautiful they become in full display. This painting is an attempt to highlight the reflective colors that make the turkey's plumage so incredible.

Annually since the early 1980's, the S.C. Department of Natural Resources (DNR) conducts a Summer Turkey Brood Survey to estimate reproduction and recruitment of turkeys in South Carolina. The survey involves agency wildlife biologists, technicians and conservation officers, as well as many volunteers from other natural resource agencies and the general public.
The Wild Turkey Zone: Fall Turkey Hunting
After the spring breeding season is over, the turkeys begin to break up into the sex and age classes they will stay in through fall and winter. Generally, you will find three types of flocks in the fall.

Turkey Season

Turkeys in all Seasons

There are turkeys living in the wild throughout the whole year. We may think of turkeys mostly in the fall as Thanksgiving approaches but let's take some time to think about what turkeys are up to throughout the rest of the year.

Learn all about turkeys. When you see a turkey in the wild can you tell what time of year it is?

Jim Arnosky is one of my favorite authors and his book, All About Turkeys is no exception. I like to read books about turkeys with the children, write down lists of everything they know about turkeys and then try to spend so time outside watching the wild turkeys that nest and feed in our field. In winter we watch for their tracks and in early summer sometimes find turkey nests.

Did you know that turkeys make many different sounds? If you listen carefully you may be able to decipher what the turkeys are trying to communicate. Listen to the recording made by the National Wildlife Foundation. Can you imitate those calls? During circle time, play What's the Turkey Talking About? Everyone closes their eyes and one child at a time imitates a certain call. Whoever guesses correctly is the next player.

Draw an outline of a turkey with a large round belly. Make a clock face on the belly. For the hour hand, make a feather shape as a spinner. This should be big enough for the whole class to see.

Spin the feather as you sing and chant:

It's Turkey Time! It's Turkey Time!
Spin the Feather. Tell the Time.
It's Turkey Time! It's Turkey Time!
Spin the Feather. Tell the Time.

Now chant the hours by saying "Gobble for each hour."

Then say the time and start the chant again.

Tick Tock Turkey Time
As Thanksgiving time approaches, children are learning to tell time. We practice counting by fives on the clock as we point to each number using a turkey feather. Five, ten, fifteen, twenty, twenty-five, thirty .... fifty-five; The Turkey says it's Ten O'Clock!

Then we go around the clock again for Eleven O'clock etc. until we have chanted two or three hours more.

Here are some followup activities for independent seat work or to add to a Turkey Time themed Literacy Bag.

Pattern of Turkeys

Turkeys for the Bulletin Board

Children from Miss Renee's class made A pattern of turkeys by mounting Coffee Filter turkeys on alternating colors of construction paper to form a pattern.

Coffee Filter turkey- Children dye coffee filters with food coloring and water and then add a turkey head pattern.

The Turkey Head pattern can be made from the outline of a pear.

Use a gallon milk jug to make templates for the children to draw around. The beak can be made from small yellow triangles.

I keep a box of scrap paper for when we need small pieces like this.

Take a shoebox and lid and tape lid on. Next cut up a brown paper bag to cover the box. Using a razor blade cut a hole in the top of the box large enough for a preschooler to reach in.

Next using construction paper make a turkey's head and attach to the box. Cut two brown paper wings and attach to the sides of the box. For the feathers, I used 12 craft sticks. You
can paint them if you like or use them as is.

On the top of the box use a razor blade to cut 3 rows of 4 slits (total of 12 slits). (where the feathers would be on a turkey)

Make the slits as wide as your craft sticks. Next cut a piece of white tag board into 12 cards.

Write on each card the numbers 1-12. Place the cards in the hole of the box.

Turkeys Roost in Trees(To the tune of: The Old Gray Mare She Ain't What She Used to Be)

In the night turkeys sleep in the trees,
Up in the branches,
Hidden by the leaves.
In the night turkeys sleep in the trees,
Turkeys eat in the FieldUntil the daytime comes.

In the day turkeys eat in the fields,
Munch on the insects,
Scratch up the seeds.
In the day turkeys eat in the fields,
Until the twilight comes.

Think about all the ways we use to tell time.

Of course there are watches and clocks but what about the amount of time it takes for corn to grow to feed the turkey and then for the turkey to grow big enough for us to eat on Thanksgiving.

What other ways do we measure time?

Seed to Plant Stamps

Time can be measured in many ways such as the length of time it takes for corn to grow big enough for turkeys or raccoons to eat.

History of Turkeys

Turkey Time

Wild turkeys are dependent on a varied habitat consisting of hardwood and mixed forests. In the 1800s, Vermont's wild turkeys were pushed to extinction due to extensive clearing of these forests and the spread of agricultural lands.

They were first reintroduced in 1969 and fortunately have made a tremendous come back. They are now widespread in deciduous forests.
