Turks and Caicos: A Large Gift In A Small Package

Grand Turk Island is world renowned as a diving and snorkeling jewel, with its incredible aqua-blue waters. It also features magnificent beaches, and a large variety of fishing and water sports activities.

Just a few hundred yards from shore, the continental shelf suddenly drops off to a depth of 7,000 feet, creating some magnificent coral reefs, making Grand Turk one of the top five diving destinations in the world.

The cruising industry is a major economic asset to the country since the Grand Turk Cruise Center (developed and run by Carnival Cruise Lines), as the largest private employer on the island, is a major source of income. The Center, along with its support staff and cruise excursion operators make up approximately 80 percent of the non-governmental jobs in Grand Turk.

The Center itself is somewhat of a tourist attraction. The Margaritaville Cafe, at 17,000 square feet of space, is the largest stand-alone Jimmy Buffet franchise in the Caribbean. The Amoeba-shaped pool behind the Buffet's place is open to the public and features a swim up bar, a slide, cabanas, and a great view.

This lens is one of a series that the author is providing on over twenty cruise destinations in the Caribbean. Each lens will include general information on the destination, suggested shore excursions, and video and photographic illustrations where appropriate.

Effects on Cruising In Grand Turk Due To Hurricane "IKE"

Grand Turk Island was devastated by Hurricane "Ike". Eighty-five percent of the homes on the island were either damaged or destroyed. This created a temporary halt to this island as a cruise stop.

However, the Grand Turk Cruise Center, operated by Carnival Cruise Lines, is being quickly repaired and is scheduled to re-open October 8, 2008. No damage was done to the cruise ship pier, and minimal damage was done to the retail and restaurant complex. Carnival has committed to spending millions of dollars to help bolster the cruise industry superstructure there.

The Cruise Center opened in 2006, and since that time has become one of the Caribbean's most popular cruise destinations.

Turks And Caicos

The Turks and Caicos Islands (TCI, ) are a British Overseas Territory consisting of two groups of sub-tropical islands in the West Indies, the larger Caicos Islands and the smaller Turks Islands, known for tourism and as an offshore financial centre.

The Turks and Caicos Islands are situated about southeast of Miami in the United States, and southeast of Mayaguana in the Bahamas, and have a total land area of .Different sources give different figures for the Islands' area. The CIA World Factbook gives 430 km2, europa.eu says 417 km2 and the Encyclopedia Britannica says "Area at high tide, 238 square miles (616 square km); at low tide, 366 square miles (948 square km)". A report by the Turks and Caicos Islands Department of Economic Planning and Statistics gives the same numbers as the Encyclopedia Britannica though its definitions are less clear. The islands are geographically contiguous to the Bahamas, but are politically a separate entity.

The islands have a total population of about 30,000, of whom approximately 22,500 live on Providenciales in the Caicos Islands. Cockburn Town, pronounced KO-burn, is the capital, situated on Grand Turk Island.

Living in the Turks & Caicos Islands: From Conchs...to the Florida Lottery

This is an important look at what it was to grow up in the Turks and Caicos Islands. Mr. Palmer's recollections let us know what it was like before the Islands were developed for tourism. Charles Palmer allows us to see the Turks and Caicos Islanders move from a rural life into today's modern society. I recommend this book for the traveller who wants to know a lot more than where the best rum punch is served. If you're lucky, you may even meet Charles Palmer on the golf course. British West Indies-The Islands In Context

The Turks and Caicos Islands are part of a large group of former and present possessions of Great Britain, collectively known by many as the British West Indies. As such they share the common language, English.

********************************************************************************************************************

The term British West Indies refers to territories in and around the Caribbean which have been or were at one time colonised by the United Kingdom. definition Collectively these territories are also now known as the Anglophone Caribbean. Between 1958 and 1962 all of the island territories except the British Virgin Islands, the Bahamas, Belize, Guyana, and Bermuda were organised into the West Indies Federation. It was hoped that the Federation would become independent as a single nation, but it had limited powers, many practical problems and a lack of popular support. Consequently, the West Indies Federation was dissolved. Most of the territories, including all the larger ones, are now independent as separate countries with membership to many international forums such as the Organization of American States, the Association of Caribbean States, the World Trade Organization, the United Nations, the Caribbean Community, the Commonwealth of Nations and the Caribbean Development Bank among others. Some of the smaller nations which still make up the current British West Indies are British dependencies. All the former nations of the British West Indies, except the Commonwealth of Dominica are Commonwealth Realms.Islands in the Caribbean - Lists islands still classified as British West Indies

History of the Turks and Caicos Islands

The official Turks and Caicos tourism website claims COlumbus set foot on the island in 1492, long before the"first recorded sighting", unless Columbus was in dense fog, oh, and blind. Stick to official websites to ensure accurate information

The history of the Turks and Caicos Islands can be traced back to early Eurpean explorations of the Americas. The first recorded sighting of the islands now known as the Turks and Caicos Islands occurred in 1512. In the subsequent centuries, the islands were claimed by several European powers with the British Empire eventually gaining control. After the islands' settlement, the 18th century African slave trade brought many Africans to the Turks and Caicos Islands. Their descendants form a large part of Bahamas' population. The islands were governed by the British indirectly through Bermuda, the Bahamas, and Jamaica. When the Bahamas gained independence in 1973, the islands received their own governor and have remained a separate autonomous British Overseas Territory since.
