Turner Classic Movies is the ultimate cable television station for film buffs. Where else can a full-day of movie viewing be devoted to the films of June Allyson or Jean Harlow? Where else can you wake up in the middle of the night and catch "The Thin Man" or plan your schedule around when 1939's "The Women" is shown?

This lens celebrates TCM, Robert Osborne and all his private screening interviews, the clever and ever-interesting tcm.com web site, and all the stars who are not forgotten.

The Now Playing Guide

Monthly TCM schedule

A very inexpensive yearly subscription ($11.95) buys you this handy little TCM companion. The TCM schedulers are amazing and so organized. I love the themed nights and the simple icons that describe if a film is a drama, comedy, or musical.

Every month there is a star and director or producer that is featured. Robert Osborne gives his take on stars, many that he know or knew personally. Fascinating reading, for a TV guide.

Private Screenings and other Gems

TCM-produced specials

One thing you can find on Turner Classic Movies that you can't find elsewhere -- interviews with classic film stars. Not just anyone but stars like Ann Miller, Jane Powell, Olivia deHavilland, Gregory Peck, Anthony Quinn, Esther Williams, Van Johnson, June Allyson and so many others. Talks with directors, producers, cinematographers. These are true treasures as the stars share memories with knowledgeable host Robert Osborne.

Special documentaries on the making of some of the most classic films, TCM-produced biographies on so many stars, and even the vignettes that are shown between motion pictures are classics in themselves. Narrated by today's stars who admire and respect the stars of yesteryear, these short takes on stars' lives give stars such as Myrna Loy, Lauren Bacall, Joan Crawford and Jean Harlow their due. A classic is the celebration of Elizabeth Taylor as told by Paul Newman.

These are not usually on the schedule, but are aired in between movies as are One Reel Wonders, old shorts that are given a new lease on life, and even the wonderful old newsreel clips.

TurnerClassicMovies.com

The ultimate web site

TCM spared no expense in creating one of the best web sites around. It's not just about the schedule of films that are shown on TCM. It's a classic movie fan's best friend.
  • Daily, weekly and monthly schedule of films with detailed descriptions, star biographies, backstories and trivia.
  • Trivia and memory games, puzzles and Mad Libs. They change it up all the time. Fun stuff!
  • Movie News - up-to-the minute news on anything related to classic movies, producers, directors, cinematographers, designers, writers and of course, the stars.
  • Multi-media - there are movie clips, rarely seen trailers, promos, featurettes and short films. Beautifully reproduced.
  • TCM Shopping - rare and hard to find DVDs and CDs, books and souvenirs. Now they even have TCM logo souvenirs such as sweatshirts, tees and mugs.
  • Book Corner - every month a new book is featured - biographies, productions, film essays. You have a chance to win a book by entering your contact info.
  • Movie database - look up any film and the entire synopsis, production notes, links to the actor/actress bios, and more. They will even tell you the next time your film will be shown on TCM.
  • Message boards - if you're into this, you can chat with others about your favorite films, have questions answered and meet others.

What is your favorite film genre on TCM?

I admit that I love the old MGM musicals and of course the black and white films from the 1930s. I know I'm not alone!

I admit that sometimes I'd rather stay home and watch an old classic movie that I've seen 20 times than see any new one on the big screen. (more)
