Awesome Non-Kid Music That Kids Won't Hate

Find new meaning in the words "my life was saved by rock-and-roll."

Parenting is great. But those first few years are an adjustment. (Okay, I won't lie. Every year is an adjustment.) Music, sad to say, is one of the things that can sort of slip away from you if you let it.

If you're just getting into the game, great news: There's some amazing music now specifically for kids and families (special props to the incredible Dan Zanes). But there's also plenty of exciting non-kid music with kid appeal. In this lens I tour through our family soundtrack over the past decade or so. I also get nosy about your faves. At the end, a look at kid-targeted tunes that are easy on adult ears.

"If this is a
musical tour..."

"the text links are
little side trips..."

Note: Besides being rather long (sorry...you should see what I started with!), this list is 100% subjective. What played well with my kids might not with yours. But it's worth a listen.

"...to take now
or save for later.
Happy trails :)"

Power Pop

Big hooks, high energy. Crank this when coffee just isn't cutting it.

Reggae

Like a shot of sunshine. The ultimate mood booster.

Jazz

Call me a latte-swilling elitist/nerd/whatever, but this little exchange from last week made my day:

Twin 1 (age 10): What CD is this [playing in car]?
Me: Dexter Gordon
Twin 2: Oh yeah...I like him

Remember that hilarious nanny guy in Jerry Maguire who got all excited about introducing the kid to jazz? He should have used these...

Country

We like the old stuff. Or newer stuff that channels the old stuff.

Motown, Soul, R&B

Belting out a Motown classic with/to/at your kids is a total Hollywood cliche at this point. But that doesn't stop it from being really, really fun. (Tip: If times are tough, sneak off by yourself and sing loudly to "A Change is Gonna Come." Sam's or Aretha's version--you'll feel better either way.)

Back to the Future

Newer releases from
Sharon Jones & the Dap-Kings
remind me why I love old-school soul.

Kids at Heart

Who knows, these guys might all be dead serious in real life. But their music has a playfulness kids can connect with.

Piano Heroes

I've tried using Ben Folds to motivate my kids to practice their piano. E.g.--"I bet Ben Folds played the piano every day when he was your age." Not sure how effective that's been, but they do love this record. You've gotta have the mute button ready, though, as Ben tosses a few f-bombs. With Elton: What kid doesn't love "Rocket Man"? But he's got a song you might want to avoid, too. What is it with these piano guys?

"Wanna dance?
Go here."

Smart Pop

Music to inspire your kids to do their history homework. Or join the orchestra. Or visit Scotland. Or perfect their whistling. Or find out that guys sometimes like guys.

Warning

Some of the albums on this list contain curse words or "mature themes." Not most, but some. Just be ready to skip a track or hit the mute. Or maybe you're more laid back about that stuff. They're gonna hear it all eventually, right? Might as well be in the context of some &^%# great music!

Folk

It's our history.

Folk Rock

Keep folk alive.

Ska

The infectiously bouncy beat is a great match for kiddos.

What band/artist did you hate as a kid but love now?

Soundtracks

Sometimes you get lucky with a not-too-shabby kids' movie soundtrack. But my guys like these non-kid ones, too.

Blues

Even kids get the blues sometimes. My better half introduced me to Mr. Williamson and other blues greats.

strapped 4 cash?

Check your local library for these and other great artists. Bonus: If your kids don't like something, just return it.

Rock Classics

Trains, cowboys, jailbreaks, wild horses, angels, detectives, surfer girls, country boys and, uh, older women. Plenty here to spark kids' imagination.

Rock'n'Poll!

Speaking of jail...should Rod Stewart do time for "Da Ya Think I'm Sexy?"

Loading Fetching blurbs now... please stand by

Heck yeah.

prodes111 says:

But not until he's finished his stint for "Tonight's the Night"

Not-Pop says:

Yup. He was too old when he did it, and he hasn't gotten any younger. :P Someone had to take this side!

Nah--he gives the royalties to charity.

LK says:

Ah, well...there are worse things in the world, eh? Like some of his clothing choices of the 1980s? Of course, those that live in glass houses, haha.

Rufus says:

No way! Killer hook, props to the Rodster.

Jon says:

"Nah" for the zeitgeist factor alone.

KarateKatGraphics says:

He probably deserves the time...but one listen to "Mandolin Wind" and all is forgiven

World-Influenced

Straight-up world music is great for kids. But you can also indulge your inner Brangelina with these tunes blending Anglo/American and global flavors.

Pretty Stuff

Go-to tunes for chilling out a cranky kid (or parent).

Occasionally a song/album on this list seems to condone, even glamorize, cigarettes and other "inhalables." Sometimes there are simple workarounds--e.g., Ryan Adams, Heartbreaker: skip track 2, "lose" CD cover. Other times, not as simple--e.g., K.D. Lang, Drag. I told our kids that sometimes great songs are written about not-so-great stuff. They got it, even asked some good questions. (NB: Don't bring this up unless you're ready to come clean on any personal history w/cancer sticks.)

Too heavy? Jump to "Kids' Music" for smoke-free picks!

Arena Acts

Tell your kids that if the guys in these bands have worked together for 20+ years without killing each other, they should be able to negotiate the TV remote.

Tongue Twisters

Try saying each of these bands' names 10 times fast. Then dig their music with your kids.

Road Tripper

Any album on this list would enhance a family road trip. But if I could only take one, it would be this.

And Of Course...

Will there ever be a time when kids won't want to lose their heads to "Octopus's Garden"? God, I hope not.
