To begin with, you'll have to know the parts of the guitar, otherwise you might not know what I'm referring to later on.
In addition, you should know that each guitar string has a number:

Tutorial on Guitar: Simple Chords
I'm only showing you a few of the most frequently used chords in this tutorial on guitar.The finger positions on the strings are shown as black dots. An "o" to the left of the nut indicates an open string, i.e. you do not press down with your fingers on that string. A "x" to the left of the nut indicates that the string is not played together with the others.
As you progress, you will notice that there are many different ways of playing these chords, and you'll see that these are definitely not the only chords out there.
