What is Tuva?

Tuva was formerly an independent country that later became a part of the Soviet Union. They have their own pastoral culture and shamanic traditions. The picture is the flag of Tuva.

Here is a quote from the book Tuva or Bust:

"Take a look at a map of Asia - the largest of the continents. Between its outermost points on each edge, draw two straight lines - from the north to the south and from the east to the west. These lines will intersect on the territory of a small mountain country lying in a deep hollow at the upper reaches of the mighty Siberian river Yenisei. This country, situated in the very center of Asia, equally far from the icy expenses of the Arctic and from the warm Indian Ocean, from the ancient Ural Mountains and from the azure immensity of the waters of the Pacific, is called Tuva."

Kyzyl is the name of the capital city of Tuva. In the Tuvan culture they have developed a unique musical technique known as throat singing. Here is another quote from Tuva or Bust:

"Perhaps the most wonderful discovery we made during our journey was "throat singing," the Tuvan tradition that allows a lonely cowboy to sing two, three, and even four notes simultaneously. As we were poring over the November 1984 issue of Soviet Life magazine, a blind bluesman of Cape Verdian origin heard the eerie sounds of Tuvan Throat singing on this shortwave radio in San Francieco. Paul Pena first thought a diode in his radio had broker, until he realized the squeal he was hearing on the radio was melodic.

Pena's adventure was as good as, if not better than, Feynman's - and it was captured on video by filmakers. Roko and Adrian Belic, and on CD by Lemon DeGeorge."

Tuva or Bust

"As much as the soul loves a real home, it also loves to wander. It holds familiar places and things dear, and yet it craves novel sights and new belongings." Quoted from The Re-enchantment of Everyday Life by Thomas Moore.

Richard Leighton and Award Winning Physicist Richard Feynman founded together the Friends of Tuva. Leighton published this book after the death of his good friend Feynman. I cried while I read the end of this book.

It tells of their follies and struggles to obtain visas to travel to Tuva. Feynman died in 1988 of cancer. But Richard Leighton his friend does finally make it to Tuva. The group Friends of Tuva brought a show to the museum here in the US

Tuva - Trivia Game

This is also a quote excerpt from the book Tuva or Bust

TUVA TRIVIA doesn't waste your time by making you throw dice and move little plastic pieces around a silly board: TUVA TRIVIA does not leave it to chance to help determine whether you score the greatest trivia triumph known to man; TUVA TRIVIA gets right to the point by making you answer incredibly difficult, do-or-die questions from six different categories. Are you ready to take the challenge?

1. GEOGRAPHY: What country has a monument on the banks of the Yenisei River marking the (incorrectly determined) center of Asia?

2. HISTORY: What country was nominally independent FROM 1921 TO 1944, was visited by Otto Manchen-Helfen in 1929, and issued triangular and diamond-shaped postage stamps in 1936?

3. SCIENCE & nature: In what country are camels, reindeer, yaks, cattle, sheep and goals all herded within 150 miles of its capital city, Kyzyl?

4. SPORTS: In what country is basketball called SAGS BOMBOG?

5. LITERATURE: From what country is the compiler of Soyot folk literature Ondar Daryma?

6. ENTERTAINMENT: From what country is the actor Maxim Munzuk, who starred in the Akira Kurosawa film Dersu Uzala?

If you get through all the cards in one turn, you have achieved a feat worthy of qualifying you to become an honorary member of Friends of Tuva!

Music of Tuva

Tuva is a part of Russia, inhabited by a Turkic people related to the nearby Mongolians. Tuvans are known abroad for khoomei (xöömej), a kind of overtone singing.

Traditionally music from Tuva was only a solo effort. The musician's intention was usually to emphasize timbre and harmonics over rhythm. The performances were often in places of natural acoustics such as caves, cliffs, rivers, and so on. The performer would often take long pauses to allow nature its own chance to converse back. The modern music found today is often composed of ensembles of musicians playing multiple instruments and often is much more pulsatile than its traditional uses.

This is the story of the journey of Paul Pena, a fine blind American bluesman who learned Tuvan throat singing well enough to win a contest in Tuva. His solo tracks, especially his take on Robert Johnson's "Terraplane Blues," are the real blues deal, but this record truly takes off when Pena and Ondar duet. The blues and the eerie, often-guttural sounds of throat singing make a natural match, one that simply bewitches with the clear overtones and melodies, while the guitar and Tuvan banjo offer simple, but very plaintive, accompaniment. About the only misstep is the inclusion of the Cape Verdean "Tras d'Orizao," which sticks out like a sore thumb from everything else. Get that out of your system, and the rest is pure magic. --Chris Nickson

As performers from Tuva and other parts of inner Asia have responded to the growing worldwide popularity of their music, Levin follows the members of the group Huun-Huur-Tu to the West, describing their soul-searching efforts to nourish global connections while preserving the power and poignancy of their music tradition.

Includes a combination video DVD and music CD to acquaint readers with the musicians and their music. This book /DVD /CD is not to be missed! It is one of the most interesting works to come out about Tuva and throat-singing in many years. I saw this group in person at the Boulder Theatre in Colorado - WONDERFUL!!! A real treat.
