In 1996, during the years when Linux experienced its early glory, its creator Linus Torvalds conceptualized a penguin to best represent Linux -- the operating system that finally competes with the proprietary Microsoft Windows. Inspired by a photo he found on an FTP site, the penguin was later called by James Hughes as "Tux" which stoods for "[T]orvalds [U]ni[X]."
Contrary to the belief, Tux is never declared as an official logo for Linux. Though it was one of the entries for a Linux logo contest, it never won anything. Tux was created by Larry Ewing and first gained publicity when it appeared in early version of GIMP, a free graphics software.
When Linus Torvalds decided a penguin to become Linux's mascot, Tux fitted the crown and it rapidly became iconic for the said operating system. Since then, Tux started appearing on some Linux distributions, video games, web comics, among others. The penguin definitely helped labeled Linux and contributed to its rapid popularity.
The following are the few of many popular faces of Linux's Tux.
