A comedy about life and death

I caught an episode of Dead Like Me by chance -- and was hooked instantly. I mean, what's not to love about a comedy about death? The show points out that life is random and unpredictable and unfair -- and yet you're still expected to abide by a certain set of rules regardless. It features a teenaged heroine with a ruthlessly dark sense of humor. And it dares to laugh at life and death and all the crazy rituals we humans engage in -- like the office going away party for someone no one particularly knew or liked.

Death Has Never Been Trendier Than it is Right Now

NEW ! Death has never been trendier than it is right now.

MySpace.com sibling Eons.com features a database of obituaries dating back to the 1930s, to which people can add photos and comments.

Obituary writers get together once each year to discuss about the art of writing a truly memorable obituary.

And death continues to be a popular character and theme in pop culture.

Wikiquote has a section devoted to death humor.

Death has even inspired its own fashion look, which has become more mainstream over the years. In fact, Amazon.com featured ads from fashion retailer ShopBop.com on its home page recently, with fall fashion trends that included punker rock edge goth and lace.

The deaths of ordinary people now make headline news -- like the life and death of Conrad Buchanan.

The Recipe for a Hit Series

"It looks as if the Showtime team responsible for ''Dead Like Me'' took a seminar in just what elements are required to build a cutting-edge series, from theme and tone to which brand names to drop. ''Six Feet Under'' was essential viewing, as were clever group shows from ''Seinfeld'' to ''Friends.'' Which still left time for literature, chiefly Alice Sebold's best seller, ''The Lovely Bones.''
