Read and Write Fanfiction!
Some of these are just new stories about the same people. Others incorporate new characters created by the fanfic author. Many involve "shipping", putting two characters in a relationship that might or might not be canon, and a large percentage are "slash"- a term derived from the "/" slash mark between the names of two characters the writer is putting in a non-traditional relationship, such as "Kirk/Spock". Slash fiction is adult-themed and often very sexually explicit.
Below, some of the top fandoms in the world of fan fiction, according to Google and Fanfiction.net, the world's largest fanfiction archive.
- Harry Potter- HP fanfic is currently blowing all others completely out of the water. On fanfiction.net there are 263,000 Harry Potter fictions available- more than 200,000 more than its closest runner-up. A Google search for "Fan Fiction" and "Harry Potter" turned up 6.97 million results.
- Lord of the Rings- this one scores high on fanfiction.net, with 38,000 stories in the database. The Google search came up with 2.44 million results, about the same as several others.
- Buffy the Vampire Slayer- 30,000 pieces on fanfiction.net, 2.6 million Google results.
- Star Wars- 16,500 stories on fanfic.net and 7.4 million results on Google.
- Stargate- 13,500 in the fanfic.net listing, and 2.35 million Google results.
