Why bounce?
Instead, this breed has at least three speeds at which it can "walk" ... a very smooth four-beat gait with no bounce. You'll hear the terms flat walk, dog walk, and running walk. At these gaits, a TWH can "walk" at the speed other breeds jog, trot or even canter, with very little effort required of the rider.
The TWH is likely the most well known breed of gaited horse. The running walk is noted for a long reaching stride (hind hoof extends past hoofprint from corresponding front hoof, called "overstride") and head nodding in rhythm with the gait.
Walking Horses are born with the gait, but some require additional training to pick up and stay in gait under saddle. Some will trot while at liberty (out in the field) but many will not, the strong tendency to gait instead is inherent in numerous individuals and bloodlines.
Sometimes in the news due to "soring", an unethical and illegal practice of causing the horse pain in order to exaggerate the gait for the show ring, the TWH is the second most popular breed of horse in America, behind the Quarter Horse, but is still very often misunderstood.

Tennessee Walker
The Tennessee Walker or Tennessee Walking Horse is a gentle and comfortable riding horse. The breed was originally bred in the Southern United States to carry the owners of plantations around their lands. Their unique four-beat "running walk" is especially comfortable to ride, making the breed a well-suited trail companion. The breed is rarely seen in any of the sport horse disciplines; however, they are good for trail riding because of their smooth gaits, stamina and easy temper, and are also seen in Western riding disciplines and in harness.

He isn't perfect, but he's perfect for me. I love my fluffy old buddy. He's in his late teens, he's constantly overweight no matter the season, and he's as furry as a Shetland pony. He's not beginner safe, his hooves grow too fast and chip easily,...

What is soring? If you don't know, you'll find out below. Once you know what it is, you'll be LIVID that some people illegally subject their own horses to it -- or horses they are entrusted with the care of -- in the name of money.
