Bella finds Forks a bit repetitive, and lacking in joy. She never liked the ever raining city as a child, and even referred to it in Twilight as her "own personal hell on earth". However, the one exception to her boring life in Forks is Edward Cullen, the gorgeous, mysterious boy she sits next to in her biology class. Through careful observation, Bella realizes that Edward is more than he seems to be, but despite having many theories cannot bring herself to believe that there is a supernatural explanation for Edward's behavior.

From the first day she saw him, Bella believed Edward hated her as he acted with mysterious tensity and even danger when she first sat next to him. However, his attitude towards her soon began to change. He displays superhuman abilities in saving Bella from being hit by an out-of-control van about to crush her in the student parking lot of the high school. She realizes that the van hit him but that Edward seemed to be holding the van away from her which leads to Edward being confronted by Bella. She confronts him with the strangeness of the situation but he refuses to talk to her about it. As time passes, Bella and Edward are time and time again drawn to each other despite Edward's best efforts to keep his distance from her.

Bella eventually learns, from her friend Jacob Black of the Quileute (pronounced Quil-yoot) tribe, and her own observations, that Edward and his family are reformed vampires who substitute animal blood for human blood in their diet.

Despite the obstacles presented by the vampiric nature of the Cullen family, Edward and Bella fall deeply in love. Their foremost problem is Bella's alluring scent, which makes it difficult for Edward to restrain himself from drinking her blood. However, despite this and Bella's strange knack for constantly landing herself in dangerous situations, they manage to stay together safely for a time.

The seemingly blissful state of affairs is thrown into chaos when another vampire coven sweeps into Forks and their leader, James (a tracker), sets his sights on Bella. Thrilled as much by the idea of outwitting a clan of vampires as by Bella's scent, an interstate game of cat and mouse ensues. Bella, under the assumption that James has kidnapped her mother, is lured to her former ballet studio, where James attacks her. Edward, along with the rest of the Cullen family, rescues Bella before James kills her. In the chaos, Bella is bitten by James, which complicates matters further, due to the venom injected when a vampire bites which starts the process of becoming a vampire. Edward takes up the task of sucking the venom out of Bella, thus saving her from the transformation while also restraining his urge to drain her.

The book ends with the two going to Bella's prom. Beneath the surface, tension remains as Bella wishes for Edward to turn her into a vampire while Edward refuses to do so. The reason for Edward's adamant decision not to turn Bella into a vampire is not revealed.

About the Author Stephenie Meyer:

Stephenie Meyer (born December 24, 1973) is the author of the book Twilight and its sequels New Moon and Eclipse.

Meyer was born in Connecticut, the second eldest of three sisters and three brothers, and grew up in Phoenix, Arizona.

Meyer attended Brigham Young University in Provo, Utah, where she majored in English. She met her husband Pancho when she was growing up in Arizona and married him in 1994; together they have three sons: Gabe, Seth, and Eli. Meyer belongs to the The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.

Meyer says that the idea for Twilight came to her in a dream on June 2, 2003, the transcript of which is now Chapter 13 of the book. After writing and editing the novel, she signed a three-book deal with Little, Brown and Company.

The sequel to Twilight, New Moon, had an unintentionally staggered release all over North America, beginning in early August 2006. The third book in the series, Eclipse, was released on August 7, 2007. The fourth book, Breaking Dawn, will be released on August 10, 2008. She has said on her website that there will be more than four books, though the narrator might change. Midnight Sun will be more of a companion piece to the series (if published) rather than a genuine sequel, as it describes "Twilight" from the view of Edward Cullen. A rough first chapter of Midnight Sun has been posted on her website, though she has stated that it will be edited and otherwise changed before being released as a novel.

Published novels

Her first novel, Twilight, was published in October 2005. By November 2005, Twilight reached #5 on the New York Times Best Seller List for young adult chapter books [. The book also quickly gained recognition and won numerous honors including:

* A New York Times Editor's Choice
* A Publishers Weekly Best Book of the Year
* An Amazon.com "Best Book of the Decade...So Far"
* A Teen People "Hot List" pick
* An American Library Association "Top Ten Best Book for Young Adults" and "Top Ten Books for Reluctant Readers"
* Translation into 20 languages

Stephenie Meyer soon published the sequel to Twilight, New Moon, in August 2006. In its first week of release it debuted at the number 5 position for young adult chapter books on the New York Times bestseller's list . It remained in the number 1 position for the next eleven weeks. Even after relinquishing its number one spot, New Moon stayed on the list. As of March 18, 2007, it had been there for twenty-eight weeks.

On May 5, 2007, New Moon: Special Edition was released. It included special New Moon temporary tattoos, an Eclipse poster, and the first chapter of Eclipse. The first chapter of Eclipse was also read by Meyer at the Eclipse Prom in Tempe, Arizona, on May 5.

On August 7, 2007, Eclipse, the sequel to Twilight and New Moon was released. In spring of 2008, Stephenie Meyer's adult sci-fi novel, The Host, will be published by the adult division of Little, Brown and Company; it follows the story of Melanie Stryder and Wanderer, two women sharing a single body, who are forced to work together in order to save Jared, the fugitive man they both love. Meyer has confirmed that The Host is the beginning of a new sci-fi trilogy.

In fall of 2008, Breaking Dawn the tentatively-titled fourth novel in the Twilight series, will be published. Meyer also hopes to have Midnight Sun — which is Twilight written from Edward's perspective — published in the fall of 2008.

She also has a story in Prom Nights from Hell, a collection of stories about bad prom nights with supernatural effects. The other authors that have contributed with a story in this book are Meg Cabot, Kim Harrison, Michele Jaffe, and Lauren Myracle. Prom Nights from Hell was released April 10, 2007.
