Good literature? Don't make me laugh!

The Twilight Series is Awful - Really, Really Horribly Awful

I'm sure you've heard of the Twilight craze, a series of vampire books written by Stephanie Meyer. Frankly, these books are just terrible, and there should only be two kinds of people reading them: 12-year-old girls, and people seeking to read something humorous. And I say humorous because it IS - the writing is so bad, it's comical. These books are seeking to destroy any glimmering hope that today's youth will emerge as a literate, intelligent generation. And, being a part of that generation myself, that's just not cool with me at all.

I want people to understand how horrible these books are. Truly and honestly just plain bad. Stephanie Meyer just does not write well, and I guess her editors are third graders. Or giraffes. I don't know how these books could land on the shelves, but they have, and they are filled with a copious amount of glaring and awful mistakes.

What makes Twilight so terribly, horribly bad?

Word Usage

Reason #1 as to why Twilight is the worst series ever... oops, I mean the consistently most unfavorable consecution...

Stephanie Meyer makes her writing way more complicated than it should be. I guess this was in an attempt to make her sound intelligent or something, but the end result is just pathetic. It's as though she used a thesaurus to replace every. single. word. "Small town" becomes "diminutive municipality", and it just sounds ridiculous. And don't think for a second that this sort of thing is just here-and-there - it's on nearly every single page.

The thing is you shouldn't use these words just for the sake of having a book full of big, pretty words. Big words don't make a book good - especially if the words are used in the wrong context all over the place. This practice is made especially horrible when you have a plot for a book aimed at teenagers, and you're using words that only a college graduate would be able to understand.

Every English teacher I've ever had always told me that good writing is written simply; using as little words as possible to say what needs to be said. Clearly, this is not a concept that Meyer has ever heard of.

Character Development

These characters are NOT like onions - they have one-layer personalities!

First of all, there is far too much character development, and not enough character to develop, if that makes sense. I mean to say that the characters are flat and predictable and there is zero mystery remaining past the initial paragraph of their introduction.

All of the characters can be summed up in whole in one or two words. Bella is clumsy. Edward is sparkly. Bella's dad is quiet. So on and so forth. The end. No more development of character. Don't think there's some hidden traits to these characters that you'll discover in later books... there's not.

In good books, the reader learns what makes the character who they are throughout the entire book. This is especially true if the book is part of the series! In a series, the reader should not know everything there is to know about the main character in the first two pages. Unfortunately, this is what happens in Twilight.

Boring Plot

Really, eye-gougingly, fall-asleep-reading-it boring.

When it comes to the plot of the book, THERE IS NONE!

One sentence summary of the entire series: A girl falls in love with a vampire, who she winds up with together forever despite a few minor discrepancies. That's it, really. The rest is fluffy, boring filler. The "climax" takes place in the last two chapters of the books and has nothing to do with the preceding 400 pages. The "conflict" is resolved far too easily.

I want to take this opportunity to present Stephanie Meyer with a gift. It's a simple plot graph, similar to many that I received in Elementary school.

See, Stephanie, there needs to be a balance of rising action and falling action, sandwiching a big, juicy peak in the plot. I learned this in first grade, and have written quite a few (albeit simple) stories since then, using this as my guide. If you use this as a tool for your future books, I'm sure you will not have hundreds of websites dedicated to the hate of your story.

Bella Swan: The World's Worst Role Model

Submission and insecurity does NOT make for a character that we should encourage young girls to look up to.

Bella Swan is the main character of the series. Somehow, despite being horribly plain and clumsy (and not to mention a new student at her high school in a really small town), she manages to have several guys fawning all over her without any effort at all.

So, okay, she's a completely unrealistic character. How does that make her a poor role model, you ask?

Well, throughout the series, Bella becomes completely dependent on the "love of her life," a vampire. She is insecure and thrives on his attention When she finds out that he had been watching her sleep, she is delighted, rather than being understandably freaked out. By the end of book one, she is more than ready to give up any ambition to go to college or pursue a normal life, and strongly wishes to be a vampire so she can become immortal and spend the rest of her life with a boy she basically just met. And how does Stephanie Meyer continue this sickening teenage codependent affair? By making Bella continually more and more submissive to "her man" throughout the series. By the time she's eighteen, she's a pregnant vampire.

Great, awesome. Thanks for trying to inspire our youth, Stephanie Meyer.

An open letter to Twilight fans

"But hey! That's not nice! I like Twilight!"

Dear Twilight Fans,

Okay, okay. You like Twilight. I get it. Now please stop plaguing the internet with a million MS Paint "signs" dedicated to your love of it. Stop shoving Twilight down my throat on every website I visit. Just stop already. If I see another Facebook Bumper Sticker about Twilight, I will scream.

And please, please, please stop talking about "Edward". You want to meet a guy like Edward? Really? He's not even real, people. It's a character in a book. I promise you, no matter how much you whine, you will never, ever, ever find a perfect and sparkly 107-year-old vampire who will fall in love with the scent of your blood, and frankly, I think you're really odd for even wanting that in the first place. Seriously, though, cut it out. Edward is not real and you're annoying the rest of us.

Also, could you please stop comparing Twilight to the Harry Potter series? Really, I mean it. Harry Potter is far better than Twilight on so many levels, and that's not even just personal opinion. Nobody could deny the fact that the plot of the Harry Potter series is just so much more developed, and it's just an enjoyable read for all ages. Harry Potter has lasting impressions on everybody that reads it.. for YEARS! Twilight will be forgotten in the next two years, tops.

Kind regards,
Kristensup

Weigh in!

Obviously there ARE sensible and literate fans of Twilight - but why? Can you REALLY defend the series?

The Twilight Series is Awful - Really, Really Horribly Awful

Loading Fetching blurbs now... please stand by

Yes, they are horrible books.

really? says:

Did someone seriously say "go hate on Rebecca Black" instead of hating on Bella, a poorly written, ficticious character? I just don't even know where to start on that one.

Captain Obvious says:

The Hobbit is a good book. To Kill a Mockingbird is a good book. The Harry Potter books are a good series of books.

The Twilight series is terrible from start to finish.

Edward seems come from a wet dream (ask your parents if you don't know what those dreams is) Stephanie Meyer had as a teenager (Actually the whole story was REALLY inspired by a sappy vampire romance dream she had, think about that. Look it up if you don't believe me).

In the original folklore, vampires were less invulnerable, unholy, ruddy-skinned, nocturnal, demon-possessed corpses. Stephanie Meyer didn't even bother to research vampire (or werewolf) folklore. That's why her vampires are what they are.

Edward acts like a creepy stalker in the books. (eavesdropping on her conversations, controlling who she mixes with, breaking into her house at night, watching her while she sleeps). Ladies you know that creepy guy who stares at you across the street and makes you feel uncomfortable? Make him a vampire, give him a makeover and cover him in glitter and that's what Edward is.

Bad boy appeal is one thing, but he has the urge to KILL the main girl. How would you ladies feel about a man who had the urge to kill you by drinking your blood?

Jacob was an okay character until he fell in love with Bella and Edward's BABY daughter!? She's two years old, physically she's eight and she acts like a smart twelve year old. That's sick and perverted.

'Scuse me, but... says:

To the "Well, I don't see any of you haters with best-sellers!" argument:
I don't see you with one, either. But this isn't about a bestselling book; this is about opinion. The reason people review books is because they have good taste. Their points are defended by blatant facts from the book and rounded up with opinion. If you're pro-Twilight, get your statements right.
Just sayin'.

Annie says:

I completely agree with you. I'm reading some of the comments below and I'm slightly appalled that there are so many pro-Twilight comments. I mean, seriously.

The best most of them can defend the series is by pointing out how it has so rapidly gained popularity and captured the attention of people (aka hormonal teenage girls and mothers who enjoy fantasizing about Edward Cullen). Um, okay. What about the rest of the world? There's a reason Harry Potter has a much wider fanbase. They are simply better books! They appeal to readers of all ages and genders. Plus, that's not even a legitimate argument as to why the Twilight series is a GOOD series. It IS poorly written, with a baseless plot and stereotypical characters (just like you said).

I hate how some of the comments point out your spelling and grammatical errors. Okay, nobody's perfect. Meyer makes grammatical errors and I don't hear any of them complaining. Your point was excellent and cleverly argued. That's all that really matters. Jeez. I better not get grief over any spelling or grammar mistakes once I post this.

Okay, I'm ranting. I really need to stop now. Haha. Anyway, THANK YOU for seeing sense and sharing your sense with the rest of us. There's nothing wrong with expressing your point of view and trying to knock some sense into others. I know you aren't writing this because you "don't have a life besides writing negative things about what other people like" or whatever that comment said.

Btw, I'm a teenage girl. I read the first 10 pages of Twilight and strongly disliked it. I knew immediately that Meyer had a thesaurus next to her while writing the book.

And one of the comments argued that there's nothing wrong with Bella's character (and foolishness) because no one's looking towards Twilight for moral guidance! I don't believe that people usually intentionally look towards fictional works for moral guidance. But it happens, because, once upon a time, books taught us lessons! Remember in English class, when we'd analyze classics in literature? What did they all have in common? There's a THEME. Remember themes? Yeah, I do. I hate writing theme statements.

Oh my goodness. I need to stop. It's not even funny how long this is. Okay, bye. :)

The-girl-who-hates-twilight says:

I'm actually glad the books were written! Whenever I'm sad, I go to google images, type in "dumb twilight pics" AND THEN DIE LAUGHING! I hate every thing about twilight!*bangs fist on table* HECK I'VE NEVER EVEN READ THE BOOKS OR WATCHED THE MOVIE!! I'm not allowed to! >:D AND ALL OF YOU THAT SAY OTHERWISE ARE JUST SHALLOW AND JEALOUS OF MY LOGICAL THINKING! (lol what the HECK?!)

Besides, you twiturds can't even spell. Then you try to say long fancy words like "disenfranchise"(no I did NOT look at spelling while typing it). I'M BARELY 12 AND I CAN SPELL BETTER THAN ALL OF YOU TWITURDS COMBINED!!

*sits back down*

Ok... My angry rant is over.

Girl says:

goodness, i agree! and one of the other thing is now adults seem to think all of us girls are obsessed with it! my nan bought me the books AND the films, and i had to sell them online! they're teaching girls that they can't live without a guy, which is NOT true, and the 'vampires' are just pathetic. if i had a guy watching me while i sleep, i'd be freaked. just, seriously. i don't think these books are a patch on Harry Potter.

guy says:

They even forget what a REAL vampire and werewolf are.Vampires are blood-thirsty killers not stalkers of teenage girls.Jacob is OK because the fact that he doesn't want to hurt Bella but they could add more action. When somebody says vampire and werewolf I want a bloody fight to the death not a girl being "hurr durr i like him better GTFO other guy hurr durr

Cat says:

The Twilight Saga was okay. The Fans destroyed it.

Rosie says:

The books are boring and make me want to vomit every time bella thinks of her 'man' EDWARD CULLEN

Bubble pop says:

You're right, they are terrible. Not that I'm much a writer myself, but honestly, the books are too predictable, and the somewhat interesting characters like Alice and Jasper don't get enough development. It's sad, really.

Anonymous says:

Personaly i've only seen a couple of trailers and read about Twilight on the net (simply out of curiosity) and that was enough to make me feel sick about the whole thing because of 2 reasons:
1. the vampire myth is totaly bashed and hacked to the point that they are no longer perceived as being creatures of the night, monsters that kill humans in order to continue their unholy existence, instead they became in Twilight nothing more than walking disco balls that glitter and seduce braindead teens (no offence intended).
2. The whole idea of a romance between an undead (yes vampires are undead creatures, they're neither alive nor dead) and a human (his prey) is sick and unnatural this is like a lion having love with a water buffalo (his favorite prey)
I don't hate the author but i would love it if she would document herself about what a vampire is and does before she writes about them.

L Lawliet says:

I have read Twilight, and watched the movies and I disliked it. I'm suprised that the series even got published. But you know, to each their own. If you don't like it, cool. If you enjoyed it , yay!

Caleb says:

YES IT IS! Harry potter has at LEAST 8, yes count it 8 plots. 1 per book, plus the ongoing plot of Good v. Evil. Not to mention countless plots in character life. They are well written show so many great aspects. I could go on forever about this!

Christina says:

Twilight is just so bad. I agree with everything stated above. Of course everyone has the free will to read anything they want...but why would you willingly choose to read this utter crap? Harry Potter, FOREVER!

Marie says:

I can't defend my reading Twilight... then again, I can't defend my watching Jersey Shore, either. Or having Paris Hilton on my Ipod. It's fiction meets pop culture. Over-hyped, over-appreciated garbage disguised as something good. Everyone will talk about how they either love or hate it until Breaking Dawn Part II comes out on DVD, and that will be the end of it.
Until Midnight Sun!

She-Who-Must-Not-Be-A-Twitard says:

Wat r u sayin twilight is SOOOOO good

No, sorry Twitards. If you agree with the above sentence and find writing such as that even remotely respectable, I have some very strong doubts as to how you passed/will eventually pass any English class.

However, I strongly commend each of you for the sole reason that reading your arguments almost never fails to make my day just that little bit more humourous.

And I ask, as many before me have done (including the author of this article), to stop comparing this appalling series to Harry Potter, in the hope that if we say it enough you will eventually get it through your thick, underdeveloped minds.

That1Guy says:

I'm thinkin' that people only enjoy the books, because they just want someone with a dark mysterious past, who they can hopefully 'heal' with their love. The books just a 12 year old girls wet dream, which is a shame as the kid can't understand the book.

some kid says:

To Anony-
Don't you dare bring religion into this. Sure the author wrote some crap books instead of cheating on her husband, but that has nothing to do with her religion. You should never, ever, ever try and put one individual's life and choices as a staple of an entire religion. The author and the books in no way are reflections of Mormonism or any other religion. Please be sure to separate the two next time.
PS- the books are very poorly written.

EDWARD IS A FUCKING CANDY-ASS! NOW TIME TO MUCK UP THE PRO TWILIGHT SIDE WITH MEMES!

Yamamoto says:

This is hilarious! I love reading the comments that support Twilight, and finding how just about every one of them has several spelling errors.

What are you talking about? They're genius!

Simba says:

...Kidding. It sucks ass!

Young Reader says:

I turned fourteen four months ago, and frankly, I'm insulted by the allegation that young readers don't know better. I read pulp fiction, and I read Beowulf; I've enjoyed Harry Potter, Eragon, and Paradise Lost. The younger generation isn't to be pitied, coerced, or criticized.

Twilight is 'junk fiction', true, but so is nearly every other popular modern fantasy or noir book out there. How many of you enjoy the Dresden Files or the Inheritance Cycle? When you were young, didn't you pore over those Goosebump and Candy Apple books? I'm not even going to go in depth about the Japanese manga/anime nonsense craze that's gripped the Western youth.

What's important to remember is that while Meyer aspires to lyrical poetry, we can still savor her fiction on a lower level. This world isn't composed solely of the Dickensian elite, and it would do some of you some good to remember that.

Jocelyn says:

Olivia says:

Twilight is such a great movie(: you don't understand anything that your talking about Stephanie Meyer is such a great talented writer. Look at how many people enjoy the books and movies its really said that you spend your time writing negative things about it, when your one of the few people who dont like it. If you hate it so much keep your opinions to yourself no one wants to hear it especially all the twilight fans.

A smart person. says:

No, I really hate them. But I DO love people who have no ability to spell properly. Dear:

Complicated, not compplicated
Grammar, not gramar.
Marginally, not MARGINIABLY.

Marginable is related to stock trading. Sweetie, really. Pick up a real book. The twilight series is one of those romance books trashy lonely women read, just dumbed down for teens. Read some Dickenson, e.e.cummings, J.K.Rowling for gods sake. REAL woman writers with talent and drive. Yes, you can read what you want, but frankly, Stephanie Meyer should not be read by adolescent girls. Or,well, anyone.

person:P says:

FUCK YOU I CAN READ WHATEVER I WANT IM THIRTEEN EDWARD IS BETER THAN ANY REAL BOY IN OUR SCHOOL YOUR JUST JEALOUS YOU CAN READ ALL THE LONG COMPPLICATED WORDS I THINK YOUR GRAMAR SHOULD BE IMPROVED MARGINIABLY

person:P says:

oh and btw the movie isn't about GIRLS LOOKING UP TO BELLA AS A ROLE MODEL! THAT SHIT DOESNT EVEN MATTER! NOBODY CARES! SURE EVERYBODY HATES BELLA BUT NOBODYS GOING TO START IMITATING HER SO STOP SAYING "THE MOVIE IS BAD BECAUSE BELLAS A BAD ROLE MODEL" STOP THINKING UP HALF-ASSED REASONS TO HATE TWILIGHT IF YOU'RE BORED JUST HATE ON REBECCA BLACK OR SOMETHING

person:P says:

YOU GUYS are the ones posting freaking everywhere that twilight is HORRIBLE not us i mean, what the hell happened? when the first movie came out, EVERYONE, including you jerks, loved it and it was all the rave! WHAT HAPPENED NOW, HUH? TWILIGHT GOT TOO BOOOORING FOR YOU?! I KNOW THAT BELLA IS BORING BUT THE ROMANCE IS WHAT ITS ALL ABOUT! I dont really care about edward but i love the romance. bella basically NEVER fell in love prolly and edward was the first serious love i think it was juss love at first sight, i know she was a bit intense, but she's a freak! what can you do about it? AND FYI I BET YOU NEVER EVEN READ ALL FOUR OF THE BOOKS SO ITS NOT JUSS "FILLERS" IT STILL HAD A PLOT! the reason why girls like the characters from twilight is because they desperately wish they could have a guy like that but they dont, so they can only juss imagine it so dont beat on them! YOU NEVER EVEN TOOK THE TIME TO READ THE BOOKS SO STOP! and i know that the author used a lot of "biiig woords" but she tried going for the more "sophisticated" theme idk but she tried to make it dramatic, and failed a teeny bit, but stop, seriously, you guys freaking LOVED the first movie then you got tired of it and dumped your crap on everyone who liked it

someone says:

Gotta admit I read them and enjoyed it. I can't deny that they objectively suck, though, so it was some sort of "guilty pleasure" (:

Ahatake says:

I love Twilight to be honest. I'd love to be like the vampires in this series.

lily says:

i like twilight. yeah, i agree with everything this post said and i DO think edward is creeepy(yes, a fan that thinks edward's creepy) and
bella is annoying. but i love the story! I love alice and seth and jasper!
love your website twilight sucks (http://twilightsucks1.livejournal.com)
i am in the middle of this argument. twilight is an ok series.

Callie says:

They're not genius, at all, but... I understand all of your points, and many I agree with. It is awful to be dependent on a relationship, and it would be a lot better if the books made this clear and Bella eventually got more self-esteem, confidence, and independence, and it is shame that did not happen. That's really the only problem I have with the series. I wish she had kissed Jacob in the car in New Moon like she almost did. It could have - but of course wouldn't have in this series - changed everything. It's a pity. But that aside, it's a love story and silly romance is OK, it's OK to enjoy it. As long as you know the difference between a love story and real life. I understand all the insults and arguments between antis and fans, but i think people should calm down and have a mature discussion about it. Let kids know about independence etc without calling them retards. And fans need to stop threatening violence. That's very weird. Hopefully everybody will grow up soon, but I doubt it. It's just a book.

Meggan says:

They are great topics to wright about, but it depends how you (the writer) portrays them. I love so many books because of what happens, but it always depends on how the writer actually writes them

Jie says:

This entire debate -- no, brawl -- is composed of idiots throwing generic arguments at generic fans, most of whom I suspect to be phony, and accusing the opposing side of extremism or stupidity. I say we end this without flinging anymore insults. Everyone is biased in this argument.

A. Reader says:

Yes, Meyer seems to value syllable-count more than meaning, and yes the characters are drawn in a sometimes painfully simplistic way, but you've got to admit that she's doing something right! From a business perspective, Meyer's tapping into every pre-teen's fantasy, and for the rest of us they're pure escapism. The rough sketches that Meyer gives us of most, if not all, of her characters allow us to fill them in with our own experiences - that may not be the stuff of great writing but it sure is of great commercial literature. Plus, I really can't criticize Meyer's writing too much after reading "The Short Second Life of Bree Tanner" - that's definitely got a clear plot and complex characters.
Oh, and please stop dissing the "fangirls" because of their grammatical/spelling errors - it's not big or clever.

amy says:

Why bother with this whole twilight internet stuff cuz its ridicules yes im a twilight lover no i dont go around lukin for an edward. And i dont dislike harry potter either but i cuda died se3eing dat book

amy says:

hey

Iluvtwilight says:

i <3 twilight no matter wat u crappy people say. Twilight is awesome and I wanna see "Breaking Dawn". The series is awesome. If you were wondering, I'm on Team Edward.....

Zell says:

all i have to say is literacy rates among teens is up 25 %. crap plots and fictional fantasy's aside..... kids can read now. and i dont see you with any best sellers.... just saying. when was the last time you were able to wright something have it published and be set for life? she did something right.

GREAT essay!! Okay, I'm going to start out by saying that:
    A. I've read all the Twilight books, far more times than I'd like to admit

    and

B.Yes, I've seen all the movies, too. (hides)

    AND

    C. I'm a Christian. No, not THAT kind of Christian (is sure everyone is picturing wild-eyed Bible-thumping fundamentalists.) However, that fact does give me some insight into what goes on with so many Christians who ARE both fundamentalist and conservative, and who have melted into little puddles of goo over Twilight. I think that religious people have hyperventilated over a couple of points that seemed very appealing to their belief structures-- such as Edward refusing to have sex with Bella before marriage-- and ignoring the other 800,000 things that should have been red flags.

Bella actually does think specifically about her religious beliefs (or lack thereof) at one point in New Moon, and then just dismisses them. She states more than once that she doesn't really care if she loses her soul, as long as she's with Edward. How about her yapping on repeatedly about how she didn't really care if she went to heaven or not, as long as she ended up with him? If I actually WERE arguing this in that variety of Christian forum, I'd get into the entire 2 Corinthians 5 discussion, where Paul clearly states that the kind of relationship Bella gets into with Edward after knowing him for, oh, about 2 weeks is the kind that we are explicitly told we should only have with God (yes, this really only makes sense if you're a Biblical literalist, but that's kind of the whole point here.) In fact, the entire vampire/werewolf theme really SHOULD have been enough to cause fundies to light big bonfires made up of nothing but several Amazon truckloads-worth of Twilight copies (and let's not forget the point in Twilight where Bella stated that she didn't really care if Angela turned out to be a witch...) but rarely a discouraging word was said.

Really, there was nothing from Christians that compared to the outcry against Harry Potter, even though everything about Twilight should have been much more disturbing.

Some Twilight fans honestly scare me - but I don't think I should say anything bad about the books as I haven't read them. I saw the first Twilight movie though. I thought it was terrible, then I went online and read the book reviews and decided it's not for me :)

I'm sometimes tempted to read it though, to see if it's really as bad as everyone says.

Excellent! I tip my hat off to you. I personally haven't read Twilight, but I've heard bad things about it from my friend who has read it and my aunt, who said it was "the biggest waste of her time." Twitards really just need to read some good literature and then think, "Is Twilight really OMG TEH BESTEST BOOK EVA?"

AHAHAHAHAHA. I LOVE this lens. Amazing! Made me laugh while pointing the so obvious flaws in Twilight. I actually kind of liked the first Twilight book, even though I knew how horrible it was, there was just something enticing about it. So yeah, I do kinda like the first book, but I agree with all your points. But it's tragic some of the levels these fans reach with obsession. Not just tragic, scary, haha.

5 stars and favoriting! Also, lensrolling to my lens, "Edward Cullen-Stalker?" :)

I really can't comment on the Twilight series because I've never read any of them but this lens made me laugh. I love it.

Hmmm...I'm going to go out on a limb here and suggest that "mopngloflo's" comment serves as a case in point as to why no one seems to have noticed Meyer's lack of prowess with a pen. I read the first book (yawn) just to see what all the hoopla was about. Outside of the "forbidden" aspect of the subject, I'd have to say I still don't get it. Very nicely done lens ~ 5*

I love you Kristen, and your brutally honest analysis.
When I always talk about how poorly written the Twilight series is, people just scoff and assume I'm jealous of the author's success.
I would be quite ashamed being made famous from these horrible excuses for books.
