Bella and Edwards relationship is steady and their peers and Edward's family of vampires, the Cullens, accept the couple as such. However, as we all know, the path of true love never did run smoothly. An incident at a party, thrown for Bella by the Cullens, demonstrates to Edward just how precarious Bella's position is, as a human surrounded by vampires.

Bella has repeatedly requested of Edward, for him to make her "one of them", but so far he has refused her request. She is frightened of being in a world without Edward, to grow old whilst he remains forever young. Failing to understand the true depths to Edwards love for her, she is fearful that as time passes, he will become repulsed as she ages.
