Twister Game

The Twister game is an immensely popular game for friends, family and generally people of all ages. It is played on a large mat that consists of four rows of coloured circles. The game uses a large plastic spinner that a selected spinner, spins in turn. The spinner's board is divided into four segments: one for the right hand, one for the left hand, one for the right foot and one for the left foot. Each segment is in turn divided into four colours. When the spinner stops spinning, it will indicate a body part and a colour: for example, yellow circle / right hand. The player is then required to place his or her right hand on the yellow circle on the Twister mat.

Each player then repeats the process in turn. When there are only two players, the two players can never have a foot or hand on the same circle; the rules differ if there are more players.

The point of the Twister game is that there is a limited number of available circles on the mat, and therefore the players have to assume very contorted positions in order to place their hands and feet where they are supposed to be. Players are eliminated from the game when they fall or when their knee or elbow touches the mat. The last player to stay in the game wins. In theory there can be as many players as want to join the game, but in practice any more than four is very tight.

Twister History

The patent for the Twister game was first submitted by Charles F. Foley and Neil Rabens in 1966, but its success was only clinched when the game was played by Eva Gabor and Johnny Carson on the Tonight Show on May 3, 1966.

The game, produced commercially by Milton Bradley, was an instant hit, but it also attracted considerable controversy, on the grounds that the game requires people to come into physical contact, often in potentially awkward positions. This prompted Milton Bradley's competitors to accuse them of selling a very contentious board game. This controversy did little to slow the game's ascent to worldwide popularity.

Twister Game Popularity

Despite the controversial aspect of Twister, the game also attracted considerable praise for its capacity to appeal to people from all walks of life and cultures. For example, many American universities organise Twister game contests for charitable purposes. Furthermore, the Twister game has drawn praise from sociologists for being very inclusive with respect to socioeconomic status. In other words, the game is not associated with any particular social class or income bracket. It welcomes everyone. The result is that Twister has been one of the major fads of the 20th century, along with things like the Hula hoop.

Twister Game Records

According to the Guinness Book of World Records, the biggest game of Twister used 4699 square feet of mats that were placed alongside each other to form one colossal Twister mat.

The record for the game of Twister involving the largest number of contestants was set in 1987 at the University of Massachusetts (Amherst) in the United States: there were 4160 contestants in total.
