Have you hit the Twitter Following Limit?

Twitter, like any site where people get together, is at risk of being overrun with spammers and people pushing their products in your face.

To address the problem of spamming accounts, adding thousands of people and sending them messages, Twitter has introduced Following Limits.

Here is how Twitter confusingly explains it:

"Twitter enforces a following limit of 2000 people per account, unless you have more than 2,000 followers yourself.

If you have more than 2,000 followers, you're able to follow a number that is different for every account, based on the number of people who follow you. You can always follow 2,000 people-- if more than 2,000 follow you, you can follow a number higher than 2,000 that is determined by the number of people following you."

Sounds confusing, right?

Here it is in plain English:

In my own words

To make sure you are not some spammer who is just adding accounts but not being interesting in the slightest Twitter limits you to following 2000 people, until at least 2000 people follow you back.

If you just added 2000 people, and none of them added you back because you are a spammer, why should Twitter let you keep adding more?

Until you prove yourself by getting people to follow you back you will be limited.

When you go above 2000 followers Twitter will keep an eye on your account to make sure you don't use your new freedom to add thousands of people. They watch your following-to-follower ratio.

There are ways to easily get around this though :)

So what does this mean for you?

What do Twitter follower limits mean for you?

It means Twitter has a much cleverer way of limiting accounts than myspace, and you have to be a little cleverer too if you are looking to grow your account in a flurry of speed.

Automating the Following Limit

Twitter monitors your ratio to make sure all is well with your account, so you need to monitor it too.

The friend adder TweetAdder will help you keep an eye on your following-to-follower ratio, will help you add new people, and unfollow everyone who doesn't follow you back. It has a free trial also.

These key features make handling your Twitter account the old manual click-click-click way very slow and painful indeed...

3. Things To Remember:

  • 1. If you really are a spammer, Twitter will find you and kill your account. You have no excuse if you really are a spammer, so don't even bother. It's much easier to build up a real twitter following than constantly dodge the official rules.

  • 2. If you reach a follower limit when you shouldn't have, you can ask Twitter HQ to look into the bug. They have written on their help pages that this has happened before, so don't panic if you suddenly find yourself unable to follow anyone new.

  • 3. Have fun! Twitter is a place where people meet to communicate with each other. They don't go there so you can constantly throw your website link into their face. Be respectful, join in discussions, and both your Twitter following and business will grow.
