All you need is one or two big players to link to something you've produced, and you'll see a spike in the number of visitors to your site. With a bit of luck, you may even get PageRank.

Search Engine Optimization:

Your Twitter page can pick up SEO PageRank. This increases your odds of people finding your page through Google, and securing more visitors to the sites you link to from your Twitter page.

Retweeting

Another way this Twitter strategy works in your favour is through retweeting. I recently started using TweetDeck after a conversation with SEO Guru Marc P Summers. I discovered that several of my tweets have been retweeted by much bigger players than me.

Retweeting can put your tweet (and it's link back to your site) in front of a much wider audience. It's another reason why I have come to love Twitter, and the valuable role it plays in my online marketing.

For example, on July 16 2009 I had 9 posts retweeted over an 8 hour period. Collectively, these people had 36,639 followers between them. As a result, links to my sites were put in front of 50 times more people than I have following me. I didn't have to do anything to make this happen. From my perspective, this was free promotion.
