Twitter Power Curve!

Twitter, the latest and greatest item in real-time information networking, has taken off like a rocket. The latest social media site seeing an astronomical amount of success in a such a short time-span, "born" on March 21st, 2006, has already seen server resource issues present themselves. However, internet marketers, don't let that deter you. Twitter is positioned to be the best and highest visibility information and advertising medium on the planet, and is already talking with heavyweight Google on future projects and functionality.

Internet marketing giants can already be seen with over twenty-five thousand followers, while its creators like Jack Dorsey are numbering above three-hundred thousand followers, and celebrities like Ashton Kutcher @aplusk and Demi Moore @mrskutcher have surpassed the 1 and 2 million follower milestones. Corporations are already positioning themselves in the market, looking for a new advertising and marketing medium to reach its customers and potential customers. AT&T, Dish Network, Sprint, and MTV are just a few of the corporate giants who have created their Twitter profiles already. In fact, news media giants such as BBC Business, NBC News, Fox News, and Clear Channel have become involved with using Twitter as a communications media resource.

What does this mean for internet marketers world-wide? If you're not already on Twitter, you're definitely behind the power-curve!

Social Media Marketing and Advertising on Twitter

THERE ARE SOME AMAZING ADVERTISING OPPORTUNITIES

Firstly, let me begin by letting you know two things:

1) You can make money on Twitter.

2) YOU CAN MAKE MONEY ON TWITTER.

Twitter can be used as a money making tool in several ways. For one, you can allow other people to advertise on your profile for a commission. As you gain clout within Twitter, your follower base will grow to be in the hundreds, and then in the thousands. As more and more people are interested in hearing what you have to say, so does the potential audience for advertisements. This is where Magpie, RevTwt, and Sponsored Tweets come in.

Chirp, chirp!

Magpie is a Twitter interfacing advertising community, much like your standard affiliate networks. However, instead of your having to generate sites to send traffic to affiliate ads, your Twitter account is the site! Magpie will analyze the keywords in the topics and information that you are sharing on your Twitter profile, and then decide which advertisements would be appropriate for your audience. Frequency of these ads are dependent on two things:

1) How frequently you want them to post in relation to your own posts - This can range, per your setting within your Magpie dashboard, between 1 advertisement for every 1 post of yours, all the way to 1 advertisement for every 200 posts. This is highly valuable, as some followers will drop you if they get hit with ads more than valuable information.

2) How large of a following that you have - The higher the number of followers, the higher the frequency of ads that you will see. Since ads will not occur for EVERY number of posts that you set them for. (i.e. if you set them to occur for every 5 posts of yours, you may not see an add for 20 - 100 of your posts if no ads meet your post content and if there are profiles with higher followers than yours with relative content as well). This is helpful to the advertisers because they know that their advertising dollars are well spent by going to higher profile communities.

Another amazing feature is that you can advertise your own products on Twitter. This is a double benefit because if you advertise other people's products on your profile, and make money from their ads, you can turn around and invest that earned money to pay for your advertisement posts on Twitter! Can you say, "Free Advertising"? I knew you could...

In the end, Magpie is an extremely highly rated and valuable tool for any Twitter active internet marketing arsenal.

RevTwt is another Twitter focused advertising engine. The RevTwt referral program is a great way to spread the word of this great service and to earn even more money with your Twitter account! Refer friends and receive 20% of their earnings for life!

You can pick and choose from the available advertisements that you post on your profile. This allows you to put the ads that you feel your readers will be interested in, as well as minimize the frequency of advertisements on your profile.

There is also an FAQ and forum resource available to users through their site. This ensures that users can get their questions answered, not just by the site owners, but by other users that are finding success using the RevTwt advertisements on their profile!

Again, remember that balance is key when it comes to your Twitter profile content. So, be sure to give TONS of valuable information to your users before hitting them with an advertisement!

SponsoredTweets referral badge

Sponsored Tweets is a highly recommended Twitter advertising engine. It pays per tweet on your profile, and recommends to you what you should charge based upon the number of followers that you have, and how often they are on Twitter!

Sponsored Tweets even has a two tiered advertising system. They pay 1) Per single tweet placed on your profile - a value which you choose (the site recommends one to you to make it easier), and 2) Per click on the tweets which the advertisers place on your profile. My first payout was $2.81 for a single tweet! Be sure to sign up for this service, as their customers are highly respectable in their industry, which means that people will want to do business with them. Preferred products means happy customers!

Twitter Account Management & Automation

Because your time is valuable to you, you need to simplify your Twitter use as much as humanly possible - sometimes even beyond humanly!

TWITTER ACCOUNT AUTOMATION

Tweet Adder

Tweet Adder was an amazing find in my book. I was considering several different solutions when it came to automating my follower/following management, and was disappointed with the "monthly fee" membership applications. I don't want to pay $29.95 EVERY MONTH for an application that I should only pay for once. If Microsoft tried to pull that one, they would probably be publicly flogged! All joking aside, Tweet Adder was a one time affordable payment, for a lot of functionality.

Firstly, it allows you to automate following by allowing you to choose who you want to follow based upon bio content, message content, user geographical location, followers of another user, or users that another user is following. You can also choose to follow back users which are following you, or just send follow messages randomly to users. Unfollow management is also included, by allowing you to choose to unfollow users that you are following who have not chosen to follow you. It allows you to choose to only unfollow users that were added using Tweet Adder, plus it has a safe list feature which allows you to have a core list of users that you ALWAYS want to follow regardless of whether they are following you.

Secondly, your communications can even be automated somewhat. A message, or group of messages, can be disseminated down to your followers, so that you can notify them of your latest releases or notices. You can also build a list of Tweets that you want to randomly be posted to your profile (which is good if your have a core set of websites that you want to promote on a daily basis), as well as messages that you want to randomly be used to reply to DM's sent to you. You can even post replies to tweets that have you mentioned, i.e. @username, so that you can say thank you for a mention or for some other purposes. For daily postings, I recommend that you simply make posts to Twitter, or to use another scheduler to schedule posts for the next day the night before. Then, use Tweet Adder to randomly insert your core posts which promote your websites. This way, you provide your users with current and valuable posts each day, as well as promote your websites, by doing half of the work each day!

You are of course limited by the amount of automation that you can do based upon the number of posts and messages that you can make daily. This amount is increased by Twitter as your following increases, and you can contact Twitter if you have a business account that you want to have increased bandwidth for. However, overall, Tweet Adder is a highly recommended product and will make your daily Twitter usage that much easier.

Tweet Glide

Tweet Glide is a free Twitter account management tool that allows you to view tweets, in a categorized fashion, so that you can focus on a specific type of tweet. I was developed by Mike Filsaime @MikeFilsaime, and was just released to the public this week.

In essence, it is much like Tweet Deck, which many of you are familiar with. However, it would not be a Mke Filsaime product if it didn't have something to do with internet marketing. You can place your own advertisements within his application for other user to see. So, whether you're promoting an affiliate ad, or simply promoting your personal or company website, this application will definitely help you to build a greater viral following.

Growing Your Business on Twitter

LIST BUILDING

List building is the most basis, and successful, marketing method on the planet. It is just as successful in Internet Marketing as it is in brick and mortar Marketing firms.

Twitter List Builder

Twitter List Builder is a new and innovative system which allows you to build your list within Twitter, without any cost to you. By promoting your affiliate link, and posting the standard tweet from the TLB website, your list grows each and every week. Just be sure that you post your link at least once a week, and that you try to promote it through other online channels as well. Your primary audience is within Twitter, but you have plenty of Twitter users out there on the web as well, so don't just focus your efforts on Twitter.

Remember, your Twitter account's value is based upon quality of the content that you provide, so don't flood them with ads or promotions. I know that I sound like a broken record, but this is highly important. You will rapidly lose followers if they feel that you are only selling and marketing, and they are not learning from you or enjoying your tweets.

Twitalyzer

You WILL be rated within Twitter

YES THERE WILL BE A TEST

Internet marketers, get ready! If you're not already Tweeting away each and every day, then you're definitely going to start. However, keep yourselves under a little of control. You will be graded on your Tweets! Each and every one of you are graded on several key factors about your Tweeting habits. My best advice is that you give as much valuable information on Twitter as possible. Hints, tips, and suggestions are always good. Helpful links to information or breaking news is also a good item to share with your followers. Be sure to give recognition to other Tweeps to your readers when another Tweeter gives you good information, by sharing it with your followers. Plus, keep your number small for when it comes to the advertisement/helpful information ratio!

Twitalyzer was created for just this purpose! By running Twitter analytic functions upon each and every user within Twitter, Twitalyze will give an accurate score for your user-id, which any user can look at... The analysis will give them information on the following:

1) Influence

As Twitter becomes increasingly important to online communication, the creators of the Twitalyzer believe that the need to measure the impact of our efforts in Twitter will increase a commensurate amount. While some believe that "popularity" is an appropriate measure of success, we disagree, eschewing this easily gamed metric in favor of something more robust, more fair, and more difficult to cheat.

The Twitalyzer solution is our measure of "influence in Twitter" calculated based on:

* Your relative reach in Twitter, measured by the number of followers you have
* Your relative authority, measured by the number of times you are "retweeted"
* Your relative generosity, measured by the number of times you "retweet" others
* Your relative clout, measured by the number of times you are referenced by others
* Your relative velocity, measured by the number of updates you publish over a seven day period

Each of these measures are weighted but otherwise the calculation is incredibly simple. We believe that what you get is a measure of success in Twitter that can be applied in a variety of ways. We know this measure is not perfect but, well, we're not perfect and we don't believe in holding software to a higher standard that we ourselves live up to.

Signal to Noise Ratio

One of the great things about Twitter is that you can say anything you want (in 140 characters or less.) Some people choose to pass along information, others choose to share anecdotes, and still others talk about their cats. The Twitalyzer has observed that people tend to gravitate towards strangers who are passing along information. Our signal-to-noise ratio is a measure of the tendency for people to pass information, as opposed to anecdote.

By our definition, "signal" will be counted for any update that includes at least one of the following elements:

* References to other people (defined by the use of "@" followed by text)
* Links to URLs you can visit (defined by the use of "http://" followed by text)
* Hashtags you can explore and participate with (defined by the use of "#" followed by text)
* Retweets of other people, passing along information (defined by the use of "rt", "r/t/", "retweet" or "via")

If you take the sum of these four elements and divide that into the number of updates published, you get the "signal to noise" ratio. For example, if you published four updates and two of them contained links, your signal-to-noise ratio would be 50% (2 updates with signal / 4 total updates).

Generosity

We believe that Twitter is a lot like life, only in fewer characters, and that being generous with others is extremely admirable. In Twitter, we think of generosity as one's willingness to pass along ideas and call attention to those ideas we think are great. Our measure of generosity is one's propensity to "retweet" someone else, thusly creating awareness of their work and idas among your own followers. Specifically, our measure of generosity is based on the ratio of retweets you pass along to all updates you publish. Simple, huh?

This leads to the obvious (yet cynical) conclusion that "if you want to game the Twitalyzer's influence calculation, all you have to do is retweet other people a lot." Yes, yes that will work. And if we are able to get more people to share information in Twitter just to eke a few more points out of their influence score, well, then we believe we have done good work.

Incidentally, if you retweet more frequently, you'll also increase your signal-to-noise ratio as well. Sweet, huh?

Velocity

Your velocity is simply the rate at which you contribute to Twitter. Since the Twitter Search APIs limit us to 1,500 records, at least for the time being, you are judged against a theoretical maximum of 1,500 updates per week.

This is not to say that you should attempt to write 1,500 updates every week, especially if you don't have very much to say and would end up telling your followers about your cats, lint, or your feelings about your mother. But the reality of the situation is that the most influential people in Twitter are, by and large, writing a lot which helps increase the awareness of their personal brand, the likelihood that they will be referenced, and the likelihood that they will be retweeted by others.

Conversely, Twittering a lot about nothing will increase your velocity but decrease your signal-to-noise ratio. And while the latter is not directly factored into the influence calculation at Twitalyzer, in our experience if you start to ramble about nothing you will lose followers very, very quickly.

Clout

lout is often thought of as "special advantage, pull, or influence" in the real world, as in "the senator's nephew has a lot of clout with his uncle." In our usage, clout is the likelihood that other people will reference you in Twitter, as in "gee that @Mashable sure does drive a lot of traffic!" The more people who reference you, the higher your clout.

Our definition of clout is simply the number of references to you divided by the total number of possible references (as governed by the Twitter Search APIs).
