What is Twitter?
Twitter is a free social networking and micro-blogging service that enables its users to send and read messages known as tweets. Tweets are text-based posts of up to 140 characters displayed on the author's profile page and delivered to the author's subscribers who are known as followers. Senders can restrict delivery to those in their circle of friends or, by default, allow open access. Users can send and receive tweets via the Twitter website, Short Message Service (SMS) or external applications. While the service itself costs nothing to use, accessing it through SMS may incur phone service provider fees.
The 140-character limit on message length was initially set for compatibility with SMS messaging, and has brought to the web the kind of shorthand notation and slang commonly used in SMS messages. The 140 character limit has also spurred the usage of URL shortening services such as tinyurl, bit.ly and tr.im, and content hosting services, such as Twitpic and NotePub to accommodate multimedia content and text longer than 140 characters.
Since its creation in 2006 by Jack Dorsey, Twitter has gained notability and popularity worldwide. It is sometimes described as the "SMS of the Internet" since the use of Twitter's application programming interface for sending and receiving short text messages by other applications often eclipses the direct use of Twitter.

Although estimates of the number of daily users vary because the company does not release the number of active accounts, a February 2009 Compete.com blog entry ranked Twitter as the third most used social network based on their count of 6 million unique monthly visitors and 55 million monthly visits. In March 2009, a Nielsen.com blog ranked Twitter as the fastest-growing site in the Member Communities category for February 2009. Twitter had a monthly growth of 1,382 percent, Zimbio of 240 percent, followed by Facebook with an increase of 228 percent. However, only 40 percent of Twitter's users are retained.

Directories can be Free or Paid however most end up charging for "priority service".This includes many "Free" Squidoo directories I have seen that make you wait 6 months for a listing.However many directories offer free reciprocal listing.The ones listed above all do ...otherwise I would not list them !.
In addition you will not have to wait months to get your listing.What you will have to do is
R E C I P R O C A T E...in order to get your free listing.
The dictionary defines the word this way :

1. to give, feel, etc., in return.
2. to give and receive reciprocally; interchange: to reciprocate favors.
3. to cause to move alternately backward and forward."
So what that means in this case is
A]directory gives link to your webpage
B]You give link back to directory. Simple right?
Q-I dont want to put a link to the directory I just want a link to my twitter page; can I get that?
A-Yes but a one way [non reciprocal link] is $5 for a lifetime link to your twitter page
Q-How do I get the free listing?
A-Simply log into your Twitter account go to "settings" in the middle of the page you will see "More Info URL:" put the link the submission page of the directory said to use there ;including the http://www .When you are done click "save" .As soon as the directory webmaster sees that the backlink is in place your free listing will become active.
Q-I'm using that for my website can't I just "tweet" about the directory containing the url link?
A- Nice Try!! That would not be reciprocal now would it ? after a few hours the link will be gone and no one would see it.You would not want the directory to make your link go away in a few hours !.Anyway the directory has a script that detects broken backlinks and will delete free listings that do not contain a link back to the directory
.Q-Isn't there another place on my twitter page to put the directory link?
A-There may be some custom Twitter skins that allow additional links on the page;if there is a link somewhere on the page http://www.twitter.com/yourtwitterpage that is permanent the directory will "see" it as a backlink and it should work.
Q-I have a Twitter page about porn or gambling or drugs can I get a free listing too?
A-No these directories do not accept links in those categories; don't waste your time
Q-I will place the link in the "more info URL" on my Twitter page and then after My listing appears in the directory I will switch it back to another URL
A-That's not very nice...and anyway the Directory will detect that your link is changed and delete your listing:Just pay $5 for a one way link if you can't maintain the backlink! [paypal accepted]
