100 Twittin' Secrets (PART 2) #19 - 24
- Add links to interesting stuff (the links will be shortened automatically by Twitter) or you can use redirect services like:
SAMPLE RE-DIRECT SERVICES:
http://is.gd (very short)
http://bit.ly (very short - plus)
http://go2468.com (allows custom URLs)
http://budurl.com/ (shortens URL plus a marketing nirvana of analytics)
http://tweetburner.com/ (gives you click-thru stats)
http://mytwittertoolbar.com/ (includes 15+ URL shortening services)
==> Tweet This - Instead of sticking to the "What are you doing" question, try answering questions like:
What are you thinking about?
What has my interest right now?
How can I help someone?
What can I share?
What made me laugh recently?
In fact, try thinking Who, What, When, Where, Why, and How.
==> Tweet This - If your really famous or even mildly so, you might gain followers that enjoy personal Tweets about the minutia or trivial details of your life: "There's a green fly in my green tea!" However, if you're not so famous you had best think more about what will genuinely help or interest your followers. ==> Tweet This
- Twitter does not allow images (or videos) directly within the posts, however, people love to see images. An all-text world, even if it's Twitterworld, is rather boring. Either link to images direct (like at Flickr.com), or through your blog, or use an application like TwitPic, Twinkle etc. ==> Tweet This
- Alternatives ways to provide additional TEXT, images or videos include Rejaw.com, Posterous.com or the highly clever TwitWall (http://twitwall.com/). All of these allow very easy image and video upload, plus you can add additional text if required. Once you're done, just post a Twitter link to your Rejaw. Posterous or TwitWall and you're good to go. Take a look at this example of Twitter Tip #83 posted on TwitWall http://budurl.com/tip83 ==> Tweet This
- Video specific solutions which integrate with Twitter well (aside from those mentioned above) are Twiddio (http://twiddeo.com/), 12seconds (http://12seconds.tv/) and Seesmic (http://www.seesmic.com/). Of course all the obvious video platforms are easy enough to link as well (YouTube, Viddler, Blip.tv, Ustream.tv, Veoh, Vimeo, Gawkk, Tubemogul.com etc) ==> Tweet This
The MyTwitter Toolbar (free)
Twitter Tool of the Twitter Gods
100 Twittin' Secrets (PART 2b) #25-33
- Don't keep your Twitter account a secret. Add your Twitter link to online, offline and mobile spots. Business cards, SMS text messages, Billboards, classified ads, yard signs, stickers, flyers, yellow pages, phone message machine, and every other place you can think of. Why not add Twitter to your car: "Introducing The Mini-Twitter - taking the Mini-Cooper to a whole new level!" ==> Tweet This
- Add your Twitter message (example: "Follow Me on Twitter: http://twitter.com/dhollings") on all your online profile pages: FaceBook, Google Local, Amazon.com, Your Blog, YouTube, Naymz, Zoominfo, Ustream.tv, LinkedIn, MySpace, ReJaw, MerchantCircle, Ecademy, Pownce, Bebo, Profilactic, Tumblr, etc etc ==> Tweet This
- Send invites by email and regular mail to your connections (friends, employees, prospects, customers, etc); those most appropriate for the Twitter content or conversation your Twitter page will engage in. ==> Tweet This
- SEO your web pages, blog, and other online pages with Twitter in mind. Add your "Follow Me" message in your title tags and meta description (where appropriate). Create dedicated pages on your site or blog that are Twitter related and link to them (both internally and inbound) with your "Follow Me" message and Twitter username. Example (see top listings & site links - these may vary over time):
http://go2468.com/dhollings ==> Tweet This - Local businesses should explore GPS tools that integrate with Twitter (like www.gpstwit.com) and seek out connections with local Twitter users using advanced Twitter search tools like: http://search.twitter.com/advanced - By entering keywords related to your business topic and restricting your search to X number of miles near your location, you may discover Twitter customers that would love to follow your Twittering. Also explore TwitterLocal. Think local, think creatively. ==> Tweet This
- Use Tweetlater.com (or better yet, use Postlater) to autorespond by email and auto-follow your new Twitter followers. Tweetlater also allows you to load up tweets in advance for future postings...
...even doing COUNTDOWNS as was done upon releasing Twittin' Secrets. Make your autoresponder message very folksy, very human, very non-business like. Make is so anyone reading it thinks you typed it personally at the moment. ==> Tweet This - Including a link to something in your Twitter autoresponder email is good, but ONLY if the link goes to something really related and really interesting. Track the link, page or download file that it links to so you can gage if new followers are clicking or not. A followers interest is at its highest point immediately after they start following. Your goal is to secure enough interest (that is, muster up the Twitter WOW-factor) so they remember who you are and actually read your future tweets. Feel free to send anyone a link to these "Twittin' Secrets" #19-36: http://www.squidoo.com/twittinsecrets - for that alone might help cement you in as a real Twittin' friend. ==> Tweet This
- A general "rule of thumb" is to follow back MOST of those that follow you. To not follow-back can seem rude. However, following back username "JackTheRipper" might send the wrong message to your other followers if you're in the Ginzu Knife business. In other words, use good judgement.
==> Tweet This - Twitter allows followers to send DIRECT (private) messages and public messages to you. There is a high likelihood that immediately upon following you and/or upon receiving your Tweetlater autoresponder email, the new follower may message you through Twitter. I highly recommend you Tweet back to these early direct or public tweets even if you cannot maintain a high level of one-on-one messaging all the time. First impressions are lasting and you'll only get one chance to make a good first Twitter impression. ==> Tweet This
SAMPLING OF TWITTER RESPONSES (received after following)
NOTE: Below are actual responses I've received. I'm not recommending any particular type, but I suggest you read these and think about which type you feel is best. Then write yours to be BETTER than any of these!

- Hi Dan, thanks for following me! I mostly talk about food :-P but I guess even internet marketers have to eat!
- Wow! I'm honoured that you've decided to follow me. Thank you for your interest.
- Dan, I usually don't follow back, I'm keeping my contact network 'expert tight'. You've just made it to the list. It's an Honor & Welcome =)
- Hello there and thanks for the follow! Look forward to connecting .....cool site you have btw :) Rob
PERSONAL (type)
- No examples here, but whenever someone writes a personal note directly to you. Many feel this is the most personal and welcomed variety. Do you agree?
- Asking a question?
- Including a link to an interesting poll?
http://twitter.polldaddy.com/ - Mentioning a recent post they've made.
- Telling them you have "favored" one of their posts.
- Recommend a couple of good people to follow.
- OR... here's a really cool idea from Dave (of: Feed Me, Gurus). Dave sends a 12 second "Video Hello" (using 12seconds.tv) like this:
Got 12 secs? Let me say hi in person http://tiny12.tv/3S7PN
OTHER IDEAS TO CONSIDER IN THE RESPONSE YOU SEND:
POLL: What Type Twitter Response Do You Think Is Most Effective?
Look at the sample types above for reference.
Immediately after you follow someone on Twitter, most people reply to you with a brief response (by email). Of the many types or styles of responses, which do you prefer?
100 Twittin' Secrets (PART 2c) #34-36
- Track Twitter tweets using some type of URL or page analytics. Budurl.com, Tweetburner.com, bit.ly and Google analytics for example. Your goal over time is to take note of which type posts garner the most interest among your followers. The easiest way to do this is to include links within some (but not all) of your posts and count the clicks. With just a casual eye on these click-thru counts, in time you can begin to gear your tweets or tweeting style to what your audience responds to. Try various things like: links where you ask questions or opinions; links to videos, links to pictures, links to articles, links to other Twitter pages, links to news etc. ==> Tweet This
- Try setting up interesting (or perhaps controversial) Twitter polls to get follower feedback, engagement or word-of-mouth. The easy way to do this is with PollDaddy (http://twitter.polldaddy.com/)
In fact, PollDaddy's integration with Twitter is nothing short of fantastic. It includes republishing your poll tweet on their site and they display your Twitter bio, site link, and Twitter link. ==> Tweet This - Remember that with Twitter, it's not all about YOU; rather, it's about others, it's about helping, sharing, having interesting exchanges, making things happen, and community. Blend in YOU (and what you do) in this mix and you'll become someone that people will want to follow. ==> Tweet This

Thank you for these amazing tips! Couple thoughts:
1) I honestly can't stand direct messaging in general - to me it's rude spam unless it was specifically and personally meant for me. I could be the minority in this opinion, but it actually gives me a bad view toward their account. It seems To add fuel to the fire, there's currently no way to mass-delete all DM's! :(
2) I've used tr.im for URL shortening and it's an AMAZING free service that tracks your click-through's by country, computer type, etc. Awesome interface and easy to use.
OK, going to continue on to Part 3 - thanks again Dan!!

This is one of the best pages I've seen on Squidoo, and I've seen a lot of them. Really glad to have found you through Squidoo, and now following you on Twitter. I already had a bit of a grasp on Twitter (except I tend to post too much!) but you have given me even more ideas. I just added my Twitter link to my Merchant Circle page too, and I found out that if you post a blog entry on Merchant Circle, you will get 10 advertising points to use in their advertising program, so I also found it useful to post my twitter link as a Merchant Circle blog post. Thank you again.
