Type O Negative - A Fan's Perspective
Type O Negative left a big black ugly mark on their fans. We wear that mark proudly.
You Suck!
That was the anthem that the fans jeered at Type O Negative as they took the stage. Did they mind? No, in fact, they relished in it. Type O Negative was never the type of band that wanted glorified success. If you ever saw a Type O Negative interview you would know just what I mean. They didn't need to pretend to be socialites, as a matter of fact they made sure to always put their worst face forward. Yet they still managed to generate a very loyal, and committed fan base.
My intentions are not to write a long drawn out biography of the doom metal ,Gothic metal, hard metal band, (who really knows what kind of metal they are anyway?!) Because with all the "reliable" sources on the internet I'm sure this is the last place you'll look. I did put in an excerpt from Wikipedia below for those of you wanting a Type O Negative bio. Instead, I'm going to give you an insight of the band from the perspective of 1 fan. I want to share exactly Type O Negative sits in a world apart any other heavy metal band I've heard. There are a lot of bands that I would say "they are on my top 10". But Type O Negative is nothing like these bands, or unlike any other band, really.

Type O Negative : The Drab Four
Dicks from Brooklyn
Then there were four
They called themselves The Four Dicks from Brooklyn. Sarcastic metal band Type O Negative was just that, negative. Peter Steele, Josh Silver, Kenney Hickey, and Johnny Kelley were four of the most sarcastic, and pessimistic guys you'd know. However, they managed to stay together through the changing music scene, putting out infrequent , however, satisfying (after listening to them a couple of hundred times of course) albums. From Slow, Deep & Hard to Dead Again. Slow, Deep and Hard, came out in 1991 and Dead Again in 2007. That was a span of sixteen years, with only five other albums in between. (With two compilations). From fast and raw, to slow and lethargic, each album was different, One would be nothing but raw, rage filled anthems, and the next album would have songs of tragic romance, and ménage trios, Halloween themed songs, and with a couple of practical jokes, We as fans would wait for the next album, to see if it was a good (or as bad) as the last.
Type O Negative's personality was one only a mother could love (or a really loyal fan base). They had a FTW attitude, and very well let people know. With a quick and dry sense of humor, sometimes even a bit offensive (a bit!?!) they went on making fun of the world and themselves. You see, everything they dished out, they usually welcomed threefold.
If you watch their DVD's you might come to understand their sense of humor, or you may end up hating them even more. But if you do, I recommend you watch it with the commentaries on, it's a fantastic waste of time. I'm sure you'll chuckle every now and then, even if it's when no one is looking.
Type O Negative Fans
What is a band with out it's fans?
The Fans
(if a band is only as good as thier fans, Type O Negative was screwed.
Type O Negative is kind of like a "negative" (no pun) image of the Beatles. (All you need is blodd), t So you would imagine that Type O Negative's fans are the same.
Type O Negative Fans are usually very loyal (although many of them will deny this), and worth mentioning, and yes, they are a little frightening *spend an hour on the Type O Negative Forum and you'll see what I mean. You probably won't get a big hug and welcome, but if you like green shit, well, make yourself at home, I guess. In order to truly understand them you have to have a sarcastic, dry, kind of demented sense of humor. But don't take my word for it,.stop by the Type O Negative Website, and go to their forum, they are waiting....

These Three Things
Why I love them
-
Type O Negative is "Cheer Me Up Music" . WHAT?!?! Really!! Because when I felt like crap, I could put on one of their cd's and feel like "holy shit, it could be a lot worse"! Instant fix.
-
The music, Josh on the keyboards, Peter's gloomified voice (that at first I didn't even know if I liked or not) , Kenny and Johnny, they made quite a quartet. The lyrics were dark and a bit dooming ("I feel the weight of the world on my back I see the future, the future looks black...") , but what was hilarious was, that at the same time they used most of thier lyrical content making fun of things. They wrote songs in a very contrasting way, would make a serious statement in one line and make fun of it in another.

For being such "Dicks" they were all good to thier fans, and truly took time to show us they knew we were out there ......soaking up their bs.

Peter Steele Is Gone

Everything Dies
.... on April 14th, 2010: Type O Negative's Peter Steele passed away. It was one of those things that you don't know if you should believe or not, especially after his "passing" in 2005, but this time it was different. They news spread fast, and alot of people were devastated. He was only 48. Without disrespecting Type O Negative's fans, friends and family. I just want to say one more thing about Peter, Josh, Kenny, and Johnny, (Sal too).
They have a lot of people who thank them for their irony, their music, and their sarcasm. So in traditional Type O Negative style.
YOU SUCK
"I hope it wasn't too disappointing..." Peter Steele

- You know the thing I like best about TypeO, was the fact they were real! If you watch Peter's eyes in interviews, it is like they are saying: take this or leave nobody cares attitude. Did you see the interview where he talks about what his family did to him? GREAT LENS.. I am going to feature it on my Gothic Music Lens!!
