So Many Breeds, So Many Choices!
It can get confusing trying to choose the perfect breed of dog for your home. You have to take into consideration a lot of factors, such as space, temperament, health, and more. And the breed choices can go on for miles!
There are small dogs, like Terriers and large breeds like German Shepherds. Which dog has a happy temperament and is safe for you to have around children? Which ones would make perfect companions for the elderly?
Is there a certain breed that works well being left alone in a small apartment all day while you go to work for nine hours? You have to consider all of these factors before you rush off to the dog store and let those big sad eyes lure you into making a rush decision.
You want to be careful that you choose a breed that fits in well with your lifestyle. For instance, you may abhor grooming and caring for a dog, so a breed that requires constant brushing, bathing, and trips to the vet wouldn't make a good fit with your family.
It's just as important for your dog to be happy with your choice as it is for you and your loved ones to feel happy welcoming the animal into your home. Happiness is more than just playtime.
It means you're able to meet the physical needs of your dog, like giving them plenty of exercise. If a dog requires a lot of health care, will you be able to afford it so that they live a long and healthy life?

What Is Your Reason for Getting a Dog?
For some, it's a matter of just adding a new addition to the family - a loveable pet who can cater to the needs of the family by providing them with unconditional love and adoration. When you choose a dog, you want to keep your reasons in mind to help you make the perfect choice. For instance, an elderly person who needs a loving companion, may not do well with an eager, hyper bulldog who needs to be walked on a regular basis.
But don't discount large dogs altogether - because many of them make perfect service dogs for those who are disabled or incapacitated in some manner. Small dogs also provide comfort for the elderly.
If you have children, you'll want to look hard and long at the temperament of the breed you're considering to ensure it won't be aggressive with your kids if they tug on its fur or pull its tail while playing. If you travel a lot, you'll need to choose a dog that's welcome in hotels and does well in the car (or is able to get into a doggies carrier for a plane ride).
Dogs do well with families when they're placed with someone who understands their needs and is willing to cater to them in exchange for unconditional love and affection.

Caring for Your Dog Is Akin to Caring for Your Child
When your child gets sick, you shuffle them off to the pediatrician without a moment's worth of hesitation. But if your dog begins wheezing, are you willing to do the same and take them to the veterinarian so it can get the medical attention it needs?Everything from the grass outside to the food your dog ingests can cause complications as a pet owner. Often, if you let these issues go un-addressed for too long, the small medical concern can turn into a nightmare.
Before you choose a dog, you'll want to compare each breed to see which ones are prone to certain medical conditions. Smaller dogs tend to live longer, but you have to be willing to give them the proper care. There are many books on dog care and health that focus on the individual breed. You don't want to invest in a dog care book for German Shepherds if you own a Chihuahua, since they'll all have varying health issues to consider.

The History of the Dog
by Wikipedia
![]()
The dog (Canis lupus familiaris, ) is a domesticated form of the Wolf, a member of the Canidae family of the order Carnivora. The term is used for both feral and pet varieties. The domestic dog has been one of the most widely kept working and companion animals in human history. Amongst canine enthusiasts, the word "dog" may also mean the male of a canine species, as opposed to the word "bitch" for the female of the species.
The dog quickly became ubiquitous across culture across the world, and was extremely valuable to early human settlements. For instance, it is believed that the successful emigration across the Bering Strait might not have been possible without sled dogs. Dogs perform many roles for people, such as hunting, herding, protection, assisting police and military, companionship, and, more recently, aiding handicapped individuals. Currently, there are estimated to be 400 million dogs in the world.
Over the 15,000 year span that the dog had been domesticated, it diverged into only a handful of landraces, groups of similar animals whose morphology and behavior have been shaped by environmental factors and functional roles. As the modern understanding of genetics developed, humans began to intentionally breed dogs for a wide range of specific traits. Through this process, the dog has developed into hundreds of varied breeds, and shows more behavioral and morphological variation than any other land mammal. For example, height measured to the withers ranges from a few inches in the Chihuahua to a few feet in the Irish Wolfhound; color varies from white through grays (usually called "blue'") to black, and browns from light (tan) to dark ("red" or "chocolate") in a wide variation of patterns; coats can be short or long, coarse-haired to wool-like, straight, curly, or smooth. The Complete dog book: the photograph, history, and official standard of every breed admitted to AKC registration, and the selection, training, breeding, care, and feeding of pure-bred dogs. New York: Howell Book House, 1992. ISBN 0876054645 It is common for most breeds to shed this coat, but non-shedding breeds are also popular.
