Spa Treatments

Spa treatments are pampering services rendered by a professional or by yourself.

There are a myriad of treatments to choose and sometimes it can be a bit overwhelming when you first walk in to a day spa or if you want to simply dabble in creating your own spa treatments.

Below you will find a short description of various spa treatments, including the most popular ones, to help you decide what is right for you. Enjoy!

Body Treatments

Body treatments are just like facials, except your entire body is pampered, exfoliated, and hydrated. Here are some of the most popular body treatments expected from a day spa, however, these can also be applied at home.

Salt Glow- Salt glows or salt scrubs are very popular treatments that use natural, exfoliating sea salt to remove dead skin cells. Oil is added to the salt along with essentials oils for a soft, glowing effect. This you can make yourself!

Body Polish This treatment is very similar to a Salt Glow, however, the main ingredient can be any coarse substance such as coffee grounds, sugar and even rice. It exfoliates and hydrates your skin for a soft and silky feeling.

Body Wraps Body wraps come in all flavors!! Seriously, chocolate anyone? All kidding aside, wraps usually consist of a body mask made up of algae, mud, clay and seaweed to name just a few. After the body mask is applied, you are wrapped up in towels (or other, depending) and kept warm for about 20 minutes and then rinsed off. Body wraps help detoxify your metabolic system. Some wraps are also used to help shed some weight.

Facials

Facials are the second most popular treatment on the market today and many spa salons offer different variations of facials depending on your skin type and needs. A steam facial opens up the pores and gently cleans while an exfoliating facial removes dead skin cells revealing a much more youthful appearance. A facial message is also a wonderful treatment that helps to circulate the blood. A mask if often applied to detox the skin.

Massages

Although this articles is about spa treatments that can be done at home, I thought I'd include most of what you can except from a day spa. Some of these massages can be done at home if you're lucky enough to have a willing partner.

Massages are heavenly, they scream ultimate relaxation. But which one do you choose. Find out below and pick the one that calls your name!

Hot Stone Massage - Hot stone massages are deeply satisfying as it targets deep tissues relaxing strained, tired or achy muscles. The stones used for this type of message are basalt stones which are warmed in 120 to 150 degree water. The therapist moves the rocks around, replacing them as they cool. For injured tissue, cold stones may be applied.

Dry Water MassageThis is by far the most interesting massage I've seen to date. Look ma, no hands!! This machine looks a lot like a lay down tanning booth and you have total control over it. You lay down in it while protected by a sheath and water jets target different parts of the body. You control the heat and the intensity all while staying dry. Mmmm...

Shiatsu massage - A Shiatsu massage is based on the Chinese meridian system, pressure points throughout the body that targets 12 major organs. A therapist applies pressure along the median to improve blood circulation, to relax muscles, to clam nervousness and to reduce mental anxiety.

Swedish Massage - Swedish massages have been around a long time and are the backbone of many other types of massages. This massage uses several techniques to target small and large muscle groups such as kneading, gliding strokes, tapping and friction.
