Ever Heard of Tyro, Kansas?? Probably Not....

That doesn't surprise me, as it is long past its heyday. The only reason I know of this now sleepy town is my grandparents grew up there, fell in love and married. That was back before World War I.

My mother recently showed me some vintage photos of her mother in Tyro. It made me curious about what the town was like. Here's what I've found out so far.

There was a glass factory in Tyro

My grandfather worked there. The factory made clear glass chimneys for oil lamps. The lack of availability of sand needed in the process of glass making led to the closing of this factory. Here's a video about glass blowing.

Glass Blowing

Glass blowing is like nothing else you've ever seen. There's suspense, tension, danger -- after all, they are working with fire -- and of course craftsmanship that you would not believe. And all of that to make a beautiful piece of art that is so fragile it breaks with one wrong move. Meghan Carter of www.AsktheDecorator.com takes you to Louisville Glassworks to see how glass artists blow glass.

Incorporated in 1906, Tyro was a small town with a population around 600 and located in the gas fields in Montgomery County in Southeast Kansas. At that time it was a shipping point for grain, live stock and farm produce; had one bank with a large local trade; and was supplied with express and telegraph offices, and had a money order post office with one rural route and at least two church groups, the Methodist Church and the Church of Christ.
