MTV criticized for barricade at U2 Berlin Wall concert

Cheers for U2's free concert in front of Berlin's Brandenburg Gate on Thursday have turned to jeers after organizers erected a barrier that blocked the view of the stage from the street.

The Irish rockers delivered its mini-concert on Thursday, playing a 30-minute set of just six songs - one of which was slated for broadcast as part of the MTV European Music Awards.

Both events are taking place in the German city as part of the celebrations marking 20 years since the fall of the Berlin Wall.

The concert, which included a duet of Bob Marley's Get Up, Stand Up with surprise guest Jay-Z, was blocked from public view by a nearly two-metre-high metal barrier.

It took place on a plaza just in front of the famous gate and surrounded on three sides by buildings. Organizers closed off the fourth side with a tarp-draped metal fence so that only the 10,000 who had snapped up free tickets could see the show.

The German city is teeming with visitors amid the anniversary celebrations, with German Chancellor Angela Merkel set to host a raft of world figures - including France's Nicolas Sarkozy, Russia's Dmitry Medvedev and U.S. Secretary of State Hillary Clinton - next week.

Music network MTV, which organized the U2 concert, said it had worked with a local promoter, the city and police to install the temporary fence "to ensure the safety and security of the attendees at the event as well as residents and businesses in the area."

Fans were not pleased.

"It's completely ridiculous that they are blocking the view [for the concert]," said Louis-Pierre Boily, a 23-year-old from Quebec City who travelled to Berlin for the Berlin Wall anniversary.

"I thought it's a free show, but MTV probably wants people to watch it on TV to get their ratings up," said Boily, one of myriad tourists and Berliners who have complained about the irony of erecting a barricade around a free concert meant to celebrate the anniversary, just metres from where the original wall stood.

"It would be nice if as many Berliners as possible could take part," city-state parliamentarian Frank Henkel told the Berliner Morgenpost newspaper prior to the show.

"It would be great if the organizers would avoid barriers of any kind."

U2 wraps up tour with spectacular Vancouver show

The energy was high and an emotional Bono was in fine voice

In front of an audience that included Bill Gates and "Mrs. Edge," U2 wrapped up its North American 360 tour with a stunning performance at Vancouver's BC Place Wednesday night.

Dressed all in black and wearing his trademark sunglasses, Bono thrilled the crowd with his showmanship, his still-strong voice and his shout-outs to Vancouver.

"Where are we going on the SkyTrain? Millennium Line. Expo Line. Canada Line."

The reference to Vancouver's public transit system sent the crowd into a frenzy and was one of the very few surprises of the night for anyone who has been following the band's much-publicized tour - in particular, Sunday night's live web cast of their Los Angeles concert which featured an identical set list and some of the same word-for-word on-stage banter from Bono.

Still, it's quite something to see the spectacle in person.

The band kicked things off with three tracks from their latest release, No Line on the Horizon - building energy through Breathe, Get on Your Boots and Magnificent.

But things really took off when Bono launched into Mysterious Ways, strutting across the enormous catwalk - and the crowd was on its feet.

Throughout the two-hour-and-15-minute show, it was unquestionably the older material that resonated with the multi-generational crowd. The crowd knew every word to I Still Haven't Found What I'm Looking For, Beautiful Day and Where the Streets Have No Name.

The sound was inconsistent, not surprising for this venue. But if anyone can sound good at BC Place, it's U2.

Sunday Bloody Sunday was a show-stopper. Bono has long since lost the white flag that made his performance of the anti-war anthem so legendary way back in the '80s, but he doesn't appear to have lost the passion. Performing the song on a stage bathed in green, the youthful anger was replaced by an older, wiser man's concern. (The song followed a plea for democracy to Iran.) There was also a tribute to Burmese political prisoner Aung San Suu Kyi, for whom Bono wrote the song Walk On.

The show was spectacular in the true sense of the word - the much-written-about mega stage, the enormous video screen, the intricate light show - but all that technology seems to pose a problem too. With a show so complex, spontaneity seems to be difficult if not impossible.

Even a City of Blinding Lights stroll around the catwalk with a young girl (to whom he sang "oh you look so beautiful tonight" - which actually felt kind of odd rather than cute) was clearly planned; not the spontaneous dance-with-a-fan of the U2 of old.

The evening was a star-studded affair off-stage as well as on, with Liam Neeson and football great Warren Moon in attendance, guitarist The Edge's mother ("our very first crew member," said Bono) and Bill and Melinda Gates. Bono led the crowd in a rendition of Happy Birthday for Mr. Gates, who celebrated his 54th birthday at the concert.

If the Vancouver show was anti-climactic after Sunday's Rose Bowl event (with 95,000 people in attendance plus millions more streaming online), the band didn't let on. The energy was high and Bono was in fine voice (for the most part). If anything, the show had an added element as the band wrapped up the tour - thanking the "best crew we've ever worked with" (at which point Bono's microphone went all crackly - a joke, surely), congratulating the tour's designer and singling out his band mates with praise and hugs.

"It's getting very emotional around here," Bono said toward the end of the show.

It was, indeed.

96,000 Pack Rose Bowl for Record-Setting U2 Show

Some 96,000 U2 fans packed the Rose Bowl Sunday night, shattering attendance records for the Irish rock group and the arena. But, some ticket holders didn't even get inside.

Several fans got duped when they apparently purchased tickets on Craigslist.com. The fans found out their tickets were fake when they showed up at the gate and couldn't get in. The tickets reportedly all had the same non-consecutive number on them.

"My tickets are fake... and I paid $150 for my tickets," said David Schmidt.

The Black-Eyed Peas opened the show, which sold out in hours.

The band performed on a gigantic, rotating stage that enabled fans to fill the playing field and for everyone to get a center stage view.

Bono called the big claw structure encasing the stage the "space station." It was partially inspired by the theme building at LAX and designed especially for the "360" tour, which is winding down in North America with its final show in Vancouver Wednesday.

Those who didn't make it inside were able to view the concert via a live stream on YouTube.com. This was the first full-length concert to be streamed by the Google-owned video site. The concert will also be archived online and available for free viewing.

U2's stop in Pasadena for their "360" tour broke records as the first time an event has ever completely sold out at the Rose Bowl. It was also U2's largest concert on record. The band's previous attendance record -- 84,500 -- was set at Giants Stadium in East Rutherford, N.J., last month.

Pasadena police reported no major problems as the concert came to an end.

Officials anticipated a traffic nightmare and urged those attending to use public transportation or carpool, to lessen traffic jams and parking issues.

The band's "360" tour is a massive undertaking that has the band performing in the center of stadiums, literally surrounding U2 with throngs of fans. It has been one of the top grossing tours in the country since it kicked off in September, despite some hefty ticket prices of more than $250. However, 10,000 tickets to each show have been made available at every tour stop.

"The thing about U2 has always been its audience, and in this environment, I think the audience is so important, and the reaction is so important," said Larry Mullen Jr., drummer for U2.

If you missed it this time around, U2 will return to North America beginning June 6 at Anaheim's Angel Stadium, according to concert promoter Live Nation.

U2 fans get 360 degrees of rock

Eclectic-but-aging crowd turns out, some all day long

The current president appeared in a video graphic and a former one -- Bill Clinton -- was in the press box. But the night belonged to U2, the rock 'n' roll royalty that convenes a party at Sam Boyd Stadium about once every president or two.

And frontman Bono, who's had the ear of those presidents for his social activism, needed only to spin around in circles a couple of times, arms overhead, to rechristen the stadium for a sold-out crowd of more than 40,000 for the "360" tour.

But, as he sang in the second song, "Get On Your Boots," it was too nice a night "to talk about wars between nations."

"Every religion has its Mecca," Bono told the crowd. "We (entertainers) end up here, sometimes on our knees, but we come to Vegas."

He introduced his bandmates with comparisons to every entertainer from Bette Midler to David Copperfield before declaring, "My name is Wayne Newton."

Before long, he was leading a "Viva Las Vegas" sing-a-long.

The Irish rockers and Sam Boyd Stadium don't get together too often, but when they do it's an affair to remember, fleeting but passionate.

It started in November 1992 with the "Zoo TV" tour, the first 80-foot stage with 1,200 tons of giant TV screens the stadium had ever known. It continued when the "PopMart" tour launched in April 1997. Parking-lot bootleggers rolled tape (yeah, it was tape back then) on the nightly rehearsals.

But even after a lot of practice, that date was best known for the boys getting stuck, "Spinal Type"-style, inside a giant lemon.

Now the tour is sponsored by BlackBerry and everyone used their smart phones to talk to friends on the other side.

The massive "360" stage made it look like the stadium came out on the losing end of a flying saucer invasion, almost a living-room show compared to a recent stop at the new Dallas Cowboys Stadium where photos reveal the earthlings won.

Not many bands can host this kind of party. Festivals such as Vegoose -- already come and gone since the last U2 stop -- mostly replaced single headliners for gatherings of this magnitude. Other stars on the short list, namely the Rolling Stones, opt to play big-money indoor dates on the Strip instead.

The weather smiled on the band's choice to take the path less Vegas on one of those fine desert nights that wasn't too hot, too cold or too windy. The crowd had clearly aged along with the band. Tailgating was light and refined; one party of about two dozen even hired a hosted bar with table cloths and a bartender in bow tie.

As he cooked chicken fajitas for a group in the parking lot, Las Vegan Rick Wylie said he was here for the Zoo TV tour in 92 as well, but there was no cooking then.

"Just heavy drinkin'" he said with a laugh. "That's when we could handle a hangover."

More current pop stars, Black Eyed Peas, were added as the opening act, possibly to youthen the demographic of a stadium light on the "Now Generation" they sang about.

The crowd was more on the cordial side until frontman will.i.am. won them over with sincerity, a shout-out to U2 and other bands who manage to "stay together for the love of the music," and a little humiliation of those who would be "chillin' lackadaisical" up in the stands while Fergie did her "Boom Boom Pow."

Friday also offered a pleasant morning to those who started arriving at 6 a.m. to line up for a preferred spot on the general-admission floor.

Fans debated whether it was better to be inside the race-track ramp that circled the stage or on the outside of the rail.

"We're just addicted to it, to be honest with you," said Pat Dalug, the Princeton, N.J., man who had a place near the front of the line. "Some people don't understand, but we understand. I always tell my wife -- it's better than smoking crack."

Dalug even was on the clock, sort of, passing out sunblock samples. As he eyed other fans sipping coffee or napping on air mattresses, he noted, "You forget about all the problems, all the responsibilities."

"Chicago was a little crazy," Dalug added. But neither U2 nor its fans are spring chickens anymore. "If you get arrested, it's on our record. We're not underage anymore."

Boris "Bowman" Poehland from Hamburg, Germany, was trying to follow as many shows as he could in the United States.

"This show is all about different perspectives," he says. "I've been almost everywhere with this show."

But, he confessed, "U2 is the name of my traveling agency. I love this band, but it's only 40 percent the show. Sixty percent is traveling around the world meeting old friends, meeting new friends, being in G.A. line for two days. That is the fun."

U2 rocked Glendale Tuesday night

U2 brought its 360 Tour to the Valley Tuesday night playing at University of Phoenix Stadium.

While U2's latest tour has sold out in many cities -- and added extra shows -- that is not the case in Phoenix. Tickets were still available at the stadium and some were for sale on e-Bay.

The band performed on a stage that cost $40 million to build. Five-hundred people worked four days to set it up at University of Phoenix Stadium.

"It's one of the largest rock 'n roll touring productions that's ever been put together," said a member of the crew.

The stage looks like a massive alien spaceship, 90 feet tall, complete with lights, the sound system and a wrap-around video screen that weighs 55 tons. Four claw-like legs extend outward into the crowd to make the stage seem as big as the stadium itself.

Black Eyed Peas performed the opening act for the Irish band.

There was no tailgating in Glendale Tuesday. Although tailgating was allowed at previous concerts, Glendale has changed its policy. Alcohol was sold inside the stadium.

U2 came to the Valley from a concert Sunday night at Oklahoma Memorial Stadium. A highlight there was Bono singing a bit of the Beach Boys' "God Only Knows" at the end of "Beautiful Day."

The band will be at the Rose Bowl in Pasadena, Calif., on Sunday. That show is sold out, with an audience of 96,000 expected, and will be streamed live on the YouTube video sharing site. It will be the first time for such a large show to be streamed live.

"The band has been wanting to do something like this for a log time," said manager Paul McGuinness. Fans often travel long distances to come see U2 -- this time U2 can go to them, globally."

Review: The Oklahoman
by George Lang

U2 makes it a night to remember for 60,000 fans in Norman

U2 fans will be talking about "the claw" for years, and how the Irish band brought a gigantic stage set to Norman that almost made Gaylord Family Oklahoma Memorial Stadium feel like an intimate venue -- well, maybe a basketball arena. But even with that imposing, "in the round" superstructure towering over Owen Field, the emphasis Sunday night was on U2's performance -- all the visual flash was in service to the band, which performed a lengthy set spanning 26 years -- or, as Bono said early in the set, the length of time since the group's last stop in Norman.

"It took us 26 years to travel one mile," Bono said, referring to the band's performance at Lloyd Noble Center in 1983. And throughout the concert, Bono, guitarist The Edge, bassist Adam Clayton and drummer Larry Mullen Jr. took huge leaps through U2's musical history, opening with three songs from this year's "No Line on the Horizon" -- "Breathe," "Get On Your Boots" and "Magnificent," before hurdling backward to 1991's "Mysterious Ways." While the group was highlighting its new songs whenever possible, U2 kept the crowd of 60,000 fans happy to the point of mass, ecstatic dancing when the group deployed its acknowledged classics such as "Beautiful Day" and "I Still Haven't Found What I'm Looking For."

This was an audience ready to play along: toward the end of "Still Haven't Found," Bono sang two lines of Ben E. King's "Stand By Me," and the stadium finished the first verse and chorus for him. Perhaps because the mood was right and the crowd was primed, U2 added two songs it had not played in previous shows on the tour, 2000's "In a LIttle While" and the new "Unknown Caller," a dramatic, half-chanted song partially constructed from computer commands. But after that deep plunge into the new disc, the band came roaring back to familiar territory with two of its most haunting songs, the Biblical melodrama "Until the End of the World" and a mesmerizing version of "The Unforgettable Fire."

Spotlighting new material can be challenging to a band with a three-decade history, but the new songs from "No Line" intensified in the live setting, particularly a discofied "I'll Go Crazy If I Don't Go Crazy Tonight" and the show's closer, "Moment of Surrender." But U2 also brought an uncommon intensity to some older material, especially during a fiery version of "Sunday Bloody Sunday" that was performed against images from this year's election protests in Iran. The Edge's guitar work on "Bloody Sunday" was possibly his most energized of the evening, with Clayton and Mullen barreling through the song's martial rhythm. And the band closed out the main set by devoting "MLK" and "Walk On" to jailed Myanmar opposition leader Aung San Suu Kyi, with Amnesty International volunteers walking the massive circular runway carrying masks bearing the imprisoned politician's face.

While the Black Eyed Peas performed an energetic set of recent hits including "Boom Boom Pow," "I Gotta Feeling" and "Meet Me Halfway," the opener was the equivalent to a slick, Auto-Tuned pep rally for U2 -- this is a group that has dominated the singles charts for most of 2009, but while the Peas had much of the crowd moving throughout their 45-minute segment, even a seemingly unstoppable dance-pop machine was merely a prologue for the stars of the evening. All in all, U2 played a long main set -- 19 songs -- and came back to play some of the most popular songs of its career, including "One," "Where the Streets Have No Name" and "With or Without You," with Bono singing into and swinging from a glowing circular microphone that dangled from the center of "the claw." Sure, it looked like an alien landing, but U2 cleverly used the dimensions of its enormous stage to bring a human focus to the band and its performances.

Review: Houston Chronicle
by Karen Warren

U2 and 360 degrees of entertainment

Three songs into an epic, grandly entertaining set, Bono summed up his --and U2's -- enduring connection with fans with a succinct lyric.

"I was born, I was born to sing for you," he proclaimed during Magnificent.

Bono and, by extension, U2, have taken their celebrity status far beyond record sales and chart positions. But Wednesday night inside an enthralled, open-roof Reliant Stadium, U2 showcased what first made the band iconic: music.

After a lengthy buildup and a curiously subdued entrance, kickoff tune Breathe segued directly into the clanky Get On Your Boots. The two-hour-plus set then shimmed quickly into Mysterious Ways, which blossomed into early standout Beautiful Day.

"We feel right at home here in Houston. Home of space stations," Bono said after inviting a giddy female fan onstage to dance.

He was referencing the band's mammoth, sci-fi stage. Depending on your viewpoint, it looked like a video-game controller, the underside of a spider or a moonwalk. Lights whizzed over the crowd. Disco balls swirled. Bridges floated above fans on the floor.

The band also spent Tuesday fiddling around in Mission Control at Johnson Space Center and chatting with astronauts.

"Houston, we have no problem," Bono said.

But for so much over-the-top spectacle, what came into sharpest focus was U2 and its bulletproof canon of songs. Bono has tempered his rock-star stylings with real charm, and there's no sound, or sight, quite like the Edge on guitar. Every song was given equal billing, every moment felt brisk and bright. It was a perfectly balanced dynamic of economy and extravagance.

By the time U2 launched into I Still Haven't Found What I'm Looking For, the crowd was in full sing-along mode.

There were quick snippets of Stand By Me, Thank You (Falettinme Be Mice Elf Agin) and Amazing Grace weaved into songs. Vertigo and Elevation were confident and thunderous. I'll Go Crazy If I Don't Go Crazy Tonight was recast in a pulsing house remix. Hard-charging drums from Larry Mullen, Jr. and searing guitar work marked Sunday Bloody Sunday.

It's not a U2 show without politics, and the most overt moment came during Walk On. Bono dedicated the song to pro-democracy leader Aung San Suu Kyi, who is under house arrest in Burma and has spent 14 of the past 20 years in detention. Volunteers from Amnesty International flooded the stage, holding up Suu Kyi masks, which were also distributed to the audience.

Most concerts do well to have one "moment" -- that song or scene that stays with you long after the show. U2 can claim several: the bittersweet sting of One; the anthemic cry of Where The Streets Have No Name; the ballroom swirl of With or Without You (aided by Bono's glowing microphone and LED-lined jacket).

"Texas, to me, is the center of the world right now," Bono said before launching into gorgeous set closer Moment of Surrender.

"I don't want to leave. I don't want to go home."

Muse lack the mass-appeal hooks and grand choruses that mark the best of U2's catalog. But the disheveled outfit still proved a solid opener, dousing fans with moments of epic, theatrical rock. Not magnificent, but still a nice warm-up.

Bono and U2 put on a big show at Cowboys Stadium

U2 is the quintessential stadium rock band.

We don't need further proof of that. But if we did, Monday night's show at Cowboys Stadium certainly would serve as enough evidence. More than 70,000 people witnessed the North Texas stop of the Irish group's 360 Degrees Tour. The floor, which was standing-room-only and surrounded the mammoth stage, was an ocean of human beings.

Then we have that platform contraption. Let's call it a spaceship merged with a spider, its four claw-like structures flanking a circular riser and an outer ring. The two were connected by moveable bridges. Above the band was a spectacular rotating video screen that eventually stretched into a funnel-like cloud constantly lit for maximum effect.

And of course, there's Bono, Larry Mullen Jr., Adam Clayton and The Edge. These guys couldn't be more comfortable before a humongous mass, or underneath such hi-tech gadgetry. For about two hours the U2 members sang and played with passionate precision. They backed up the spectacle with plenty of dramatic substance.

Bono was a messiah figure when he performed. Dressed in black and prone to raising his arms and tilting his head back, as if basking in the presence of his disciples, he wasted no time in preaching peace, asking for a "non-violent revolution" and turning "Walk On," the final number before the encore, into a thought-provoking tribute to Burma's Aung San Suu Kyi.

For sheer U2 explosiveness, we got "Vertigo," "Get On Your Boots," "Elevation" and "Beautiful Day." If you wanted a good groove, they delivered with "Mysterious Ways" and "I'll Go Crazy If I Don't Go Crazy Tonight." The tunes from No Line On the Horizon, the quartet's newest disc, blended perfectly with older material.

One more song deserves mention: "Sunday Bloody Sunday," an anthem that prompts fist pumping. It's just as inspiring a song now, with all the violent political unrest in the world, as it was back in 1983 when it was originally released.

Mullen's militaristic drum work filled the stadium with crisp, measured marching beats. Which brings us to the sound at the venue, a constant source of argument among concert-goers. Two colleagues of mine sitting in section 449, basically nosebleed seats, said the sound was "pretty muddy" during opening act Muse. It only got "marginally better" for them during U2's set.

However, sitting next to me in section 136 were Robb and Rebecca Peterson. U2's gig was their first visit to the stadium. Robb said the sound was "fantastic, considering the huge place they're working with." Rebecca heard it was "awful," but admitted,"It was better than I thought it would be."

Review: Tampa Tribune
by Curtis Ross

With U2, 72,000 beat as 1

For all the hoopla over hugeness of U2's 360° tour, Friday night's show at Raymond James Stadium felt less elaborate than previous U2 megaproductions.

The high-definition video screen, the major element in the band's stated effort to bring the show closer to even the cheap seats, was the main attraction tech-wise. The enormous structure looming over the stage looked impressive all lit up, as at the beginning of "Where the Streets Have No Name," but mostly faded into the background.

Which is as it should be, because all the big-budget toys in the world can't save a show this size from a second-rate band. And Friday's show was first-rate.

The Edge's arsenal of guitar effects gave the sound the heft it needed for the stadium setting. Bassist Adam Clayton and drummer Larry Mullen locked in tight, showing the benefits of 30 years of playing together.

U2 may be the only band alive whose songs make more sense being played in front of more than 72,000 people. On the record, "I Still Haven't Found What I'm Looking For" communicates restlessness and dissatisfaction. With thousands of voices singing along with U2 frontman Bono, it became a song about endless possibilities.

Songs of more recent vintage, such as "City of Blinding Lights" and "Beautiful Day" have that same quality. Friday, both exploded, as if U2's last two scaled-down, arena tours hadn't been big enough to house the songs.

Selections from this year's "No Line on the Horizon" took on new life live as well. The band brought out the punkish simplicity of the title track to good effect, while "Get On Your Boots" became the rave-up it just missed being on disc.

The show's latter portion focused more on social and political concerns, with photos from this year's Iranian protests accompanying "Sunday, Bloody Sunday." "Walk On" was dedicated to imprisoned Burmese leader Aung San Suu Kyi.

But in the end it was U2 that made the biggest impression - four musicians who wanted to be the biggest band in the world and succeeded

U2 Bring Spectacle and Politics to Atlanta

Twenty-five years into their career, U2 exist as both an Idea and a Band. The problem is, it's near-impossible to separate the two. U2 the Idea is that of all things big, flashy and still somehow passionate in rock 'n' roll, but U2 the Band is still the same group of guys who introduced the world to some of the best rock songs of all time. Everyone remembers 'Sunday Bloody Sunday' and 'One,' but with U2 the Idea so omnipresent it can be hard to remember that the group wasn't always overshadowed by Bono's political work.

The band's current tour of the country's biggest venues, then, attempts to reconcile the Band with the Idea by making each bigger than a fan ever thought possible. Just as the stage setup is breathtakingly gigantic and elaborate, so too does U2 attempt to recreate each song in an emotional space that is both individual for each fan, but shared throughout the whole crowd.

And they almost pull it off, too.

In front of a near sell-out crowd in Atlanta's Georgia Dome (capacity: 71,250) to deafening applause, Bono, the Edge, Larry Mullen Jr. and Adam Clayton ran through a two-hour-plus set heavy with hits from U2's most recent three albums while literally running all over the stage, a multi-layered circle adorned with a towering structure that looks like the claw in an 25-cent arcade game. There are few words that could do the stage justice -- overwhelming, incredible and, to cop a phrase from tour openers Muse, supermassive all seem to sell it short.

Speaking of Muse, U2 seem to have found their juniors. The English trio stomped through an hour of electro-tinged, huge-chorus rock jams including 'Time Is Running Out,' 'Hysteria' and 'Supermassive Black Hole,' Muse's slinky 'Twilight' soundtrack tune. Though the giant stage swallowed the band members a bit, Muse's sound filled the cavernous Dome well.

Then, after a half-hour of set-up, David Bowie's 'Space Oddity' blared through the PA and it was time to blast off. The song was an appropriate choice, as the stage structure resembled a spacecraft from a high-budget sci-fi flick with gigantic mechanical legs sprawling out over the circular stage with a 150-foot cylinder made of interlocking LCD screens in the middle.

"Thank you all for helping us to build this madness," said Bono after a powerful rendition of 'Beautiful Day.' "It's our spaceship. We built it to take us to interesting places. But, really, we built it to get closer to you. So put your Southern church voices together."

'I Still Haven't Found What I'm Looking For,' one of the few earlier tracks U2 played, was bolstered by thousands of voices trying to hit the high notes, a goose bumps-inducing, truly beautiful moment, and one where the band and the idea of U2 gloriously reconnected. Though the recent hit 'I'll Go Crazy If I Don't Go Crazy Tonight,' played like a techno remix of a rousing rock tune, is as far from vintage U2 as an old fan could imagine, it pushed the crowd to a frothing frenzy, right in time for 'Sunday Bloody Sunday.'

Bono's sociopolitical causes (and, hence, U2 the Idea) came into focus towards the end of the show as he spoke often about AIDS awareness. A hundred-fan march around the stage to support Myanmar's politically repressed leader Aung San Suu Kyi during 'Walk On' pushed things further.

By the time the group returned for its encore after a recorded Desmond Tutu speech about world unity, U2 the Band lost out to the Idea. The visuals (Bono hanging above the stage from a steering-wheel sized microphone while wearing a neon jacket) beat out the music. 'With or Without You,' arguably the band's finest song, felt rushed.

Still, expecting the show to be purely about the music would be silly. This tour is about the spectacle of it all, pushing the boundaries of just how big, how absolutely gigantic, a rock show can be. And to that, can U2 360 be considered anything else but a breathtaking success? 70,000 jaws dropping can't be wrong.

Review: The News & Observer
by David Menconi

The long-awaited U2 concert: Bigger than big

A few songs into U2's Saturday night show at Carter-Finley Stadium, Bono paused to survey his domain. And he addressed the packed house with the egomaniacal charm we've all come to know and love.

"We've got old songs, we've got new songs, we've got songs we can barely play," he cracked. "And we've got a spaceship!"

Yes, it was hard not to notice that. At a time when pretty much everything seems to be in contraction mode, U2 has rolled the dice with what has to be the most elaborately ginormous stage setup in rock history -- a huge claw-shaped beast that looked like a vertigo-inducing theme-park ride.

It seemed impossible that any band, even one as outsized as U2, wouldn't get swallowed up by such surroundings. But somehow, they pulled it off through sheer force of will. This business of being the biggest band on earth clearly matters a great deal to U2, and they've put this gargantuan spectacle on the road to achieve "intimacy on a grand scale." There's just no one better at enormity than U2.

After a solid 40-minute opening set by Muse, the headline portion of the evening opened with David Bowie's "Space Oddity" as prelude music, smoke machines at full belch. Larry Mullen Jr. entered first, sitting down at his drums to start bashing. Guitarist Dave "The Edge" Evans was next, with bassist Adam Clayton right behind. And Bono was last out, of course.

Bono wasted no time hitting the heroic poses on the opener "Breathe," a track from the current album "No Line on the Horizon." While "No Line" is only so-so, its songs came across much better live -- even "Get On Your Boots," the actively annoying first single. Other recent-vintage songs to hit the mark included "Vertigo," "Magnificent" and "City of Blinding Lights."

As always, Edge provided letter-perfect guitar accompaniment. If Bono is U2's preacher man, Edge is the one who built the sonic pulpit from which he holds forth.

Hammy theatrics that somehow work are a U2 specialty, such as the way Bono worked snippets of rock-era classics into U2 songs. A bit of "Amazing Grace" turned up during the encore version of "One." And during "I Still Haven't Found What I'm Looking For," Bono pointed at the moon and sang the opening of Ben E. King's "Stand By Me" ("When the night has come/And the land is Dark/And the moon is the only light we will see...").

Sometimes, however, Bono should just leave well enough alone. Tossing his microphone to a guy in the crowd to let him sing a verse of "People Get Ready" might have seemed like a good idea; but it was an off-key disaster.

Still, that was one of the show's miscues. For all the band's pretensions, U2 is ultimately just so likable that it's almost impossible not to be won over. When they went roaring into the encore version of "Where the Streets Have No Name," that guitar riff pealing like a church bell, it was a perfect moment of blissful big-rock grandeur that you just don't see much of anymore.

We shall not see U2's like again, I don't believe.

Review: Richmond Times-Dispatch
by Melissa Ruggieri

U2's spectacle in Charlottesville

U2 has always been a thoughtful band, but with each tour they manage to add new layers of reflection.

The star of the show is still Bono, who, despite looking eerily like Robin Williams with a brogue, continues to command attention with his Messianic poses and chest-thumping passion.

But the band's ego is in an interesting place on this tour. The 164-foot stage, a crustaceanlike hump that could have sprung from the imagination of George Lucas, along with the 360-degree LED screen that circled its pulsing red core and two moving bridges that transported the musicians between stage levels, is probably the grandest structure ever to house a live show.

U2 hasn't imagined a stadium tour since 1997's much-maligned "Pop" outing, and this inventive, smoke-breathing monstrosity erected at Scott Stadium last night allowed them to rightly puff out their chests over the continued scope of their success.

But, ironically, performing on the biggest stage shrank the presence of Bono, The Edge, Larry Mullen Jr. and Adam Clayton -- all of whom looked like toy action figures, even from the priciest seats.

Granted, that honeycomb video screen, which stretched vertically and swirled images of the band, specialized video elements (during a tight rave-up recast of "I'll Go Crazy If I Don't Go Crazy Tonight") and messages of politics and peace (during the sumptuous prayer "Walk On") was worth gaping at for two hours.

And, even if band members were momentarily lost on the airy stage, there was never a problem hearing them. Stadium shows are notorious for their muddled sound that dissipates into the night air, but U2's sound system and mix were among the cleanest heard in any venue and Bono's husky pipes were in muscular form.

Of the band's material from the current "No Line on the Horizon," it was the pungent slap of fuzz behind "Get On Your Boots" -- which would have been an ideal opening song instead of "Breathe" -- that invigorated the crowd of about 60,000 early in the uneven first hour of the show.

The Edge and bassist Clayton had fun maneuvering the slippery groove of "Mysterious Ways," but following it with the obscure "Your Blue Room," a plodding rumination that consumed precious set list space that a dozen other songs deserved, briefly sank the mood.

But then came the soul-gripping optimism of "Beautiful Day" and the introspective ache of "Stuck in A Moment You Can't Get Out Of," performed acoustically by Bono and The Edge in one of those scenes that made you long for a U2 show in a setting a bit more intimate than a football field.

Bono did give recognition to his Charlottesville surroundings by asking at one point, "Is Mr. Jefferson in the house?" and introduced the band with campus-friendly titles (Mullen the "jock," Clayton "the friend of cheerleaders"). He also gave shout-outs to Fredericksburg and, uh, Manassas.

Of course, every U2 show has its magical moment -- for years it's been "Where The Streets Have No Name," which, last night, was merely good -- and "City of Blinding Lights" has now claimed that slot.

As the stage and its cathedral spire glowed red and the video screen exploded in a kaleidoscope of flickering colors, Bono took a stroll around the stage imparting the line, "The more you know, the less you feel," with the heartfelt sincerity of an elder statesman passing along wisdom.

But soon enough, the Bono of 25 years ago was prancing around the circular stage for "Sunday Bloody Sunday," still a potent march of defiance.

That level of serrated energy that propels this band isn't always as palpable on this tour and realistically, it shouldn't be. The guys are all creeping toward 50, which means different mind-sets, values and even energy levels -- all acceptable reasons for choosing to end the show with "Moment of Surrender," a sweeping, pensive song that guaranteed fans filtered out of the stadium not with their fists raised in a post-concert buzz, but their minds tuned to something a little deeper.

Claw and Order: U2 Delivers the Hits at FedEx Field

After months of anticipation, it finally descended upon FedEx Field: The stage prop to end all stage props. Looming 164-feet over the stage and christened "The Claw," its menacing girth made Funkadelic's mothership look like a Frisbee covered in Reynolds Wrap.

It was stunning, surreal -- oh, and a rock band played beneath it, too. The band is called U2, and it's on the most extravagantly staged tour of its 33-year career and -- judging from the stage banter at FedEx Field Tuesday -- its fans are mostly high-ranking politicians.(Only at a U2 concert will Nancy Pelosi be shouted-out twice.)

The band charged through a satisfying set of its most rousing tunes -- "Where the Streets Have No Name," "Sunday Bloody Sunday," "Beautiful Day" -- but they often felt secondary to the nonstop visual turbulence. This wasn't about the band onstage. It was about the stage itself. "We got a spaceship," declared frontman Bono early in the show. "But it isn't going anywhere without you!"

Was it a threat? Because this thing looked scary. To call it "The Claw" is to have only seen it through the tiny windows of YouTube. In person, it felt more like "The Colossal Robotic Crustacean That's About To Stomp Off Into Prince George's County And Destroy Everything In Its Path." Even if it did manage to stay put, its laser cannons would surely vaporize Larry Mullen Jr. upon the flubbing of his first drum fill.

Those laser cannons were actually stage lights and with all of them firing in tandem, the band underneath seemed practically invincible. Take 2004's "Vertigo," a middling U2 anthem at best. As the quartet performed in the round, leaping from overblown chorus to overblown chorus, a cylindrical video screen hanging overhead actually began to move, splintering into hundreds of honeycomb-shaped panels that stretched slowly downward. Black and white images spun around this gigantic LCD funnel, a bioluminescent roulette wheel twisting on an axis of strobe lights. It was enough to set your mouth agape, and it gave the band permission to do whatever it pleased.

As long as the screen was working, that is. Early in the set, during a handsome version of "Magnificent," the pixels went black for about 90 seconds. Now this was some real suspense! What if U2 had to slog through the next two hours under the biggest busted television on planet Earth?

They would have been fine. Even while playing a new single that fans are still getting to know, this is troupe that can hold its own. Before the band had a chance to really prove it, the screen flickered back to life and The Edge plunged into a warbling guitar solo.

With all whiz-bangs whiz-banging at full capacity, U2's best tunes felt bulletproof. "New Years Day" was urgent and spry. "Still Haven't Found What I'm Looking For" was noble and smooth. Even "Mysterious Ways" managed to deliver an unexpected punch, despite Bono's awkward invocation to "Get your groove on!"

His intensity peaked during "Where the Streets Have No Name," as he stomped his foot on the stage, pleading with the crowd to chime in. He had failed to trigger the enthusiastic singalongs that these songs deserved, but here it felt almost like a demand.

What did he expect? This wasn't a rock show. This was an orgy of light and sound - something that felt most apparent during "With Or Without You." When a grown man croons one of the most tender rock songs ever written while wearing a jacket embedded with laser pointers, can we be expected to do anything else than drool?

As with any seamlessly choreographed rock extravaganza, the evening's highlight was completely unintentional. It came during that delightful moment of the band's 2000 hit "Beautiful Day," a momentary pause where band's gusto evaporates into nothing, leaving the Edge and Mullen Jr. to harmonize in empty space.

Singing into their headset microphones before diving back into the chorus, the duo sounded out of breath and out of key. It only lasted a second, but it was a necessary reminder that beneath the dreamlike spectacle flashing overhead, there were actually four guys just trying to play a song.

U2 Mix Crowd-Pleasing Anthems With History Lessons For New Jersey Show
Bono honored Bruce Springsteen, Michael Jackson and protest leaders at Giants Stadium.

Even the biggest rock star on the planet could be drowned out by the sound of 60,000 people singing, "And I still haven't found what I'm looking for." So, Bono let the crowd do his job for him.

U2 played the first of their New York-area shows Wednesday night at Giants Stadium. Beginning with "Breathe," a tune from their latest album No Line on the Horizon, the show roller-coastered from dance party to history lesson and back in the way that every U2 fan in the arena anticipated.

Three songs in, Bono paused to thank show openers, Muse, shouting out that they were #1 on iTunes in 24 countries (though they were only #3 on the U.S. charts).

Moments later, he stopped again. "Happy Bithday, Bruce Springsteen. 60 years old!" announced the U2 frontman. "Sing it for the Boss: And I still haven't found what I'm looking for!"

When the band transitioned into Springsteen's "She's the One," the speculation that the Boss might make an onstage appearance shot through the crowd like lightning. Bono modified the lyrics to "He's the one," ending the song with a humble apology: "Excuse us, Bruce." Although the cameo didn't happen, the crowd roared with approval.

Bono interrupted "Beautiful Day" with a shout-out to another music legend. "I want to do something for Quincy Jones, who is here tonight." Somehow, he then was able to fit a couple of lines from Michael Jackson's "Don't Stop 'Til You Get Enough" into "Beautiful Day."

Some of the audience may have been scratching their heads when Bono dedicated the title song from No Line on the Horizon to Sugimoto-san. Hiroshi Sugimoto, as it turns out, is the photographer whose photos appear on the cover of the new album.

In addition to newer tunes, the band brought back crowd-pleasing rock anthems like "Mysterious Ways," "New Year's Day," "Vertigo," "Sunday Bloody Sunday," "City of Blinding Lights" and "One." A dance version of "I'll Go Crazy if I Don't Go Crazy Tonight" with bongo drums should be the anthem for the 2010 World Cup.

Of course, it wouldn't be a U2 show if you didn't get a lesson on the world's suffering. Bono talked about nonviolent revolutions against the suffering in Iran and dedicated "Walk On" to embattled Burmese opposition leader Aung San Suu Kyi.

The highlight of the night, however, was much more subdued. The Irish rocker spied - in the pit in front of the stage - a tattooed fellow countryman, who requested a song to dedicate to his mother up in the stands. The impromptu acoustic version of "Stuck in a Moment" that followed had an emotional purity that shows just why this band is still filling stadiums after all these years.

U2 in the Round, Fun With a Mission

Pointing a finger toward the audience surrounding U2 on Wednesday night at Giants Stadium, Bono sang, "Oh, you look so beautiful!" - with the crowd itself shouting along. It was just one moment of mutual affirmation in a concert with an ever-expanding mission.

U2 kept raising the metaphysical ante. At first the show was about the band itself and its joy in the music it has been making for more than 30 years together. The set began with "Breathe," a song from U2's current album, "No Line on the Horizon" (Interscope) that declares, "I've found grace inside a sound."

Soon it turned from musical ambition to rock community-building, bonding the band and the 60,000 fans who had sold out the stadium. Being in New Jersey on Bruce Springsteen's 60th birthday, U2 segued Mr. Springsteen's "She's the One' (with Bono changing the chorus to "He's the one") into its own "Desire."

Then that local gathering was placed in the wider world and urged toward activism. "Walk On" was dedicated to Aung San Suu Kyi, the opposition leader and Nobel Peace Prize laureate who has long been under house arrest in Myanmar, and dozens of her supporters paraded onstage with her photograph.

Finally, this world became part of the universe and a spiritual realm with songs, as Bono used "Amazing Grace" to lead into U2's "Where the Streets Have No Name." The concert was high-minded and earthy, exalted and playful, sometimes even goofy, wielding rock-star prerogatives while undercutting them with disarming informality. "We're very humbled," Bono said to one wave of applause, and smiled. "Well, maybe not."

It was the first local stop of U2's 360 Degree tour, which is played in the round under a claw-like, spired structure that's part insect, part spacecraft, part cathedral. It's less imposing than it appears in photographs; the scalloped exostructure is stretchy plastic, not metal. But it serves its purpose: keeping the band visible and staying out of its way better than some of U2's past stadium contraptions.

Although Bono struck some rock-star poses, and there was plenty of flashy video, U2 reaches stadium crowds less with spectacle than with its sound, which swells to fill the largest spaces. The Edge's guitar parts ripple outward, often running through echo, reverb and distortion effects to spill across and around the beat; lately, in songs like "Get On Your Boots," he has rediscovered the simple, centered impact of a riff. Regardless, Adam Clayton's bass lines and Larry Mullen Jr.'s parade-ground drumming keep the songs firmly grounded.

Onstage, the band doesn't try to replicate the layers of its studio productions. The Edge latches on to the most important guitar part (and its specific tone and effects) and lets fly, whether it's the chomping wah-wah funk of "Mysterious Ways" or the wide-open picking of "Sunday Bloody Sunday." (As "Elevation" worked up to frantic, punky strumming, the Edge started hopping up and down, pogo-ing.) Bono finds grace in the sound as an Irish tenor who holds his lungpower in reserve. Where his lofty thoughts on love and faith could turn into bombast, he backed off. He often sang less forcefully than he does on the albums, as if he were serenading a confidant rather than a stadium.

Review: The Patriot Ledger *review based on night #1
by Jay N Miller

U2 deftly blends new and old to the delight of 60,000

The "360 Tour's" circular stage, revolving video screens and space age design are effective, the music from U2's their new album translates surprisingly well in concert, and the band's U2's allure remains one of the most potent forces in rock 'n' roll.

Those were the quick impressions from last night's two-hour concert at Gillette Stadium in Foxboro before about 60,000 fans, the first of two shows the Irish quartet is performing there.

U2 retains its sense of drama, as David Bowie's "Space Oddity" played in its entirety before the band took the stage, while smoke plumed out of the circular stage and its outlying catwalks and arches. The stage set sits on a series of arches, with a huge space needle pointing skyward above the top rim of the stadium. While the band mainly plays on a stage set in the middle of this, bridges to the outer catwalk shift around to provide almost every section of the venue with an up-close moment with a musician. Constantly revolving video screens atop the structure present U2 for the cheap seats.

All that production would be for naught if the music wasn't solid, but the songs from the new "No Line on the Horizon" CD worked well. Opening with the throbbing "Breathe" and its stream-of-consciousness lyrics, and following quickly with the title cut, Bono, The Edge on guitar, bassist Adam Clayton and drummer Larry Mullen Jr. took no prisoners in presenting the new material.

A thunderous run through "Get On Your Boots" clinched the deal, concluding a blistering run of three new tunes that opened the show. The quartet would perform 21 songs before night's end, using with expert pacing to ensure there that made sure there were no flat spots.
The surging blues flavor of "Elevation" was a revelation, and "Still Haven't Found What I'm Looking For" found the crowd taking over the vocals from Bono halfway through the first verse. and ending the song it with a portion of "Stand By Me" was brilliant.

The whipsaw guitar rhythms of "New Year's Day" featured some indelible work from The Edge. And when he sang the falsetto counterpoint to Bono on "Stuck in a Moment," 60,000 fans had to be were wondering why he doesn't sing more often.

"City of Blinding Lights," which Bono performed with a girl he'd pulled from the crowd, was a thrilling ride, and "Vertigo" had most of the crowd pogoing in their seats. And The percussion-drenched treatment of "I'll Go Crazy.." made it an another instant classic.

"Walk On" was done in honor of imprisoned Burmese dissident Aung San Suu Kyi, and a video of Bishop Desmond Tutu introduced "One." A fiery blast through "Where the Streets Have No Name" ended the regular set, and the endlessly inspiring "Pride (In the Name of Love)" was the final encore.

Bono, The Edge take Gillette Stadium to planet U2

Witness the power of a fully operational U2.

Last night the spaceship - as Bono called the in-the-round stage setup - landed at Gillette Stadium and four Irish aliens emerged as the biggest rock stars in the world. That's what happens when you project yourself on a 360-degree, 14,000-square-foot video screen.

Those who despise Bono, Edge, Adam Clayton and Larry Mullen Jr. for growing up (and up and up) to be a parody of the furious, little new wave punks they began as would have hated U2's latest, greatest show on earth. But for 60,000 fans last night (and for thousands more tonight), it was a mothership - a 150-foot tall, pastel green and orange-spotted, claw-shaped mothership buzzing with a million points of light - come to take them to planet U2.

Although in the cheap seats there were complaints of an incessant echo, lower down the sound was as clear as the high-def video.

The band began with four from spectacular new album "No Line on the Horizon." But it wasn't until they started going back - a slick, spare "Mysterious Ways," a very Red Rocks "New Year's Day," "I Still Haven't Found What I'm Looking For" with a closing "Stand By Me" stadium singalong - that the crowd fell for Bono and band again.

Oh, yeah, Bono brought the charisma early with presence no one else quite has (sorry, Bruce). But this band is the Edge's.

Bono's king, but Edge is the prime minster, the genius who fearlessly leads his ace rhythm section. His complex-and-simple, full-frontal, buzzing, reverbed, shimmering guitar drove "Get on Your Boots" and "Elevation," "Vertigo" and "Where the Streets Have No Name." Even Bono's bigness was overcome by Edge's intimate acoustic guitar and delicate high harmonies on "Stuck in a Moment You Can't Get Out Of."

Taken in total it was a typical U2 show, which means it was unlike anything else. Bono championed peace and political awareness - "Sunday Bloody Sunday" was recast an anthem for a free Iran, "MLK" and "Walk On" were dedicated to Burmese political prisoner Aung San Suu Kyi. Edge was, as Bono said, a test-tube baby born of Jimmy Page and Stephen Hawking. Mullin and Clayton provided the brilliant heartbeat for hits from "One" to "With or Without You."

Not the flash of Zoo TV or the earnestness of the Joshua Tree Tour, but a middle ground that topped neither. But not bad for a band that played the Somerville Theatre six-months ago.

Snow Patrol, which is kinda like a junior varsity version of U2, opened the show with a 45-minute set. The stadium was less than half full when the Irish quintet began, but those who came early almost rocked out to the almost-arena-rock band. Ubiquitous '06 hit "Chasing Cars" was damn dull, but "Shut Your Eyes" had the fans upfront shouting along, and "Open Your Eyes" exploded with a Coldplay-like crescendo

U2 blows roof off Rogers Centre

The weather has been a sore spot for Torontonians in recent months, but last night Mother Nature gave a boost to the year's biggest concert.

A breezy, but clear evening allowed the Rogers Centre's retractable roof to be open as U2 kicked off its two-night stand - a sellout concert for only the second time in the venue's history. (The first was a Bruce Springsteen show in the SkyDome six years ago.)

With the CN Tower beckoning like a lighthouse, it was the ideal setting for the four-legged, 30-metre-high, teal-and-orange spaceship contraption hovering over the quartet's circular stage. It gave the appearance that they had really dropped in from another galaxy.

It's a generous piece of machinery that takes four days to build; as a result, the group's been hanging about, allowing lead singer Bono to pick up the TTC and Yonge St. references he dropped into songs and patter last night.

Stuck as they were in the middle of a football field, the mammoth stage, which includes an expandable cylindrical video screen, worked to bring what some call the Biggest Band in the World a little closer to the 58,000 people who shelled out from $30 to $225 for the privilege.

The otherworldly theme was enhanced by a recording of David Bowie's "Space Oddity" that welcomed the veteran Irish rockers to the stage.

Not resting on any 30-year laurels, they kicked off with four songs from their current and 12th album No Line on the Horizon - the title track, "Breathe," "Get on Your Boots" and "Magnificent." The latter hit home with the hope and realism that defines their best work - "Only love can leave such a mark/But only love can heal such a scar."

Then they delved into their bag of hits for "Beautiful Day" and "I Still Haven't Found What I'm Looking For" - for which the crowd sang the first two choruses as Bono mouthed words, resuming the singalong when he segued into Ben E. King's "Stand By Me."

"We got old songs, we got new songs, we got songs we can hardly play," the frontman had joked. Never saw any signs of the latter.

This was the second city in the North American edition of the 360 Degree Tour that debuted in Europe this summer. (Live Nation reps say it's on track to be the year's top-grossing tour.)

It's a satisfying spectacle, with enviable musicianship - Edge the most dominant, with his intense ringing sound on electric guitar (and a deft acoustic turn on "Stay (Faraway, So Close)" - fantastic sound and consistent energy and emotion. They made use of the stage, wandering its outer rim and running across the moving bridges. Even drummer Larry Mullen Jr. left his kit at one point to walk around playing portable congas.

Bono, as limber physically as he was vocally, was jumping, skipping, spinning with arms outstretched. And they made sure to hit the political marks - dedicating "Walk On" to Burma's Aung San Suu Kyi as fans walk the stage perimeter with paper masks, and running a video message of peace and unity from South Africa's Bishop Desmond Tutu.

Yeah, they're big, but still bold, brilliant and true to form.

U2 raises the roof
Bono and company take Toronto by storm with a dazzling rock spectacle

If stadium rock is the final frontier, U2 has boldly gone where no rock band has gone before. In front of a sold-out Rogers Centre crowd announced as a record 62,000, the sky-reaching singer Bono and his band dazzled - triumphing with a stage-show spectacle, logistical savvy and daring music.

On the first of two nights here, very early in the group's ambitious North American leg of the 360 Tour that began earlier this week in Chicago, sounds and songs were bold in their presentation, diamond-fine sonically and regularly spiritual in their message.

During the lurching, tough opening rocker Breathe (the first of four off the often outstanding new album No Line on the Horizon ), Bono twirled slowly in place at the back of the in-the-round stage, his arms raised justifiably in a gesture that said "get-a-load-of-this."

"We got old songs, we got new songs, we got songs we can hardly play," said the all-in-black Irishman. "We got a spacecraft, but we're not going to lift off without you. Come with us on the ride," he said, working a spaceship conceit that apparently referred to the four-legged sci-fi canopy which U2 worked under. The thing - inexplicably pale green in colour, and dotted with giant tangerine-like badges - stands 30-metres tall, with an added 20-metre centre pylon on top. The steel structure is equipped with formidable enough hydraulics to deal with a 54-ton cylindrical video screen which not only rose and dropped, but expanded vertically as well. A nice toy.

"Meet me in the sound," proposed Bono during the erratic, propulsive single Get on Your Boots. Certainly U2 made that easy for its glazed-eye audience, particularly the fans in front who had lined up from as early as 4 a.m. for the chance to be corralled inside the 360-degree catwalk that circled the stage.

From the beginning - these winners of 22 Grammys have been making music since the time albums had "sides" - U2 has been overtly spiritual. "Because of the belief I have in God and music, some people see this as naivety, some stupidity," Bono said, in 1984. His faith hasn't waned. On the sweeping, jangling-guitar grandeur of Magnificent, he sang of a joyful noise. The lifting of the soul was what was meant by Elevation (led by a grungy riff from guitarist The Edge). A sing-along snippet of Amazing Grace came at the end of the memorably pleading hit One, and the night's final encore was the gracefully cathartic gospel-soul of Moment of Surrender.

On that number and all the others, the highly listenable drumming of Larry Mullen Jr. was to be appreciated. Bassist Adam Clayton completes ones of the best rhythm sections in rock. And Bono introduced the guitarist to his right by allowing the unspoken truth "that without The Edge, none of us would be here."

Non-music moments came in the form of a video address by Desmond Tutu and an appeal to consider the situation of Burmese political prisoner Aung San Suu Kyi.

The audience knew the words to the gentle anthem I Still Haven't Found What I'm Looking For, rendered initially with nothing but drums. Later came the familiar snare-drum march of Sunday Bloody Sunday, in which Bono asked how long must he sing that song. On a night where he and U2 did the audacious (making like mask-free bank bandits, brashly stealing the city's spotlight from the red-carpet set of the Toronto International Film Festival) and the unthinkable (elevating the art of stadium rock), there is no end to Bono's job to sing. Clearly, there is no line on the horizon for U2, only lines in the sand to be crossed.

Elvis is in the building

U2 has found who they're looking for in Elvis Costello. One night after the Irish superstars' unannounced taping at Toronto's Masonic Temple of a segment for the CTV musical program Spectacle: Elvis Costello With ..., the bespectacled British pop musician and husband of Canadian jazz star Dianna Krall was in the audience at Rogers Centre to witness the first of a pair of U2 mega-concerts. The group's singer, Bono, mentioned Costello's presence, and the band squeezed in very small bits of his Alison and Pump it Up. On Tuesday, for an episode to be aired at an undetermined date, Bono and guitarist The Edge had played together and also with Costello and his band. Included was a medley of Pump it Up and U2's Get on Your Boots.

U2 tour review: At Chicago's Soldier Field
Music Kickoff of U2 '360 Tour' at Soldier Field proves band is definitely on its game

Bono was lit up Saturday at Soldier Field for the opening of U2's North American tour.

In a high-tech show (with a second performance planned for Sunday) beneath a four-pronged, 90-foot-tall canopy that he referred to as "our spaceship," Bono dressed for the occasion in a jacket outlined in neon, and he dangled from a glowing, steering-wheel-shaped microphone as the band kicked into its encore. As he twirled madly during "Ultra Violet (Light My Way)" and then more lazily during "With or Without You," the two-hour, 10-minute concert took on a surreal air, with a disco ball reflecting shards of light against the balconies of Soldier Field, a tiny constellation in a galaxy of sound and glitter. Stadium concerts usually tend to feel puffed up and bombastic, but this was downright strange -- and wonderfully so.

On its previous tours, U2 had started to resemble its generation's answer to the Rolling Stones: a band that had become predictable, a stadium act rolling out decades-old hits as its songwriting stagnated. This time, the band reconnected to deeper themes in its music and reinforced a recent development in its sound: groove.

There was also the inescapable Godzilla in the room: that much-hyped megastage, which splits the difference between silly contrivance and weird, sometimes awe-inspiring art object. It dwarfed everything and reached out to all corners of the stadium, allowing the four band members to play to the crowd on all sides. The setting often made for compelling theater, though it wasn't on par with the band's 1992-93 "Zoo TV" tour, a multimedia barrage that mirrored the chaos and anxiety harnessed by its 1991 "Achtung Baby!" album. Ever since, U2 has been searching for the right mix of spectacle and intimacy on the big stage, but "Zoo TV" remains the finest supersize tour mounted by any band in the last two decades.

The centerpiece of this year's stadium model, dubbed the "360 Tour" in honor of the circular stage, was the Irish quartet's latest hit-and-miss studio album, "No Line on the Horizon"; seven of its songs were performed, out of 23 on the set list. Though there was no salvaging thin material such as the brash but empty "Get On Your Boots" and the convoluted "Unknown Caller," the atmospheric yet expansive tone of the title track connected U2 to the spiritual quest of its 1984 album, "The Unforgettable Fire."

Hence the spaceship concept and the embrace of infinite possibility in the songs, ideas amplified by the video images of Desmond Tutu and Burmese political prisoner Aung San Suu Kyi, who appeared on a 54-ton cylindrical screen. At times, the stage setup seemed more like a garish, environmentally challenged coverup, as if to distract from the band's recent, less riveting music. But it also dazzled, especially when a spire of lights shot skyward during "City of Blinding Lights."

The band was on its game. Not usually applauded for its sense of swing, U2 has shown an underappreciated affinity for getting down since "Mysterious Ways" belly-danced its way into discos during the early '90s. Because bassist Adam Clayton owns the best moments on "No Line on the Horizon," it was only fitting that the rhythm section ruled Saturday. Clayton and drummer Larry Mullen amped up the dance beats, and even Bono's vocals took on a more rhythmic sing-speak cadence. Even a well-tested crowd-pleaser like "Where the Streets Have No Name" sounded refreshed, with The Edge's metallic-toned guitar taking a ride on the bass-drums rhythm train. An even bigger surprise was the transformation of the otherwise annoyingly trite "I'll Go Crazy if I Don't Go Crazy Tonight" into a full-on house rave-up, fitting given Chicago's rich club culture.

The stadium did, indeed, resemble an outdoor club during the encore, when the show's outsize ambitions produced a neon-lit moment that nearly justified the entire costly enterprise. Bono, in fine voice all night, sang with fervor during "Ultra Violet," crooned like a wounded David Lynch lounge lizard in "With or Without You" and channeled his inner Otis Redding on the hymn-like closer, "Moment of Surrender."

The lights, the songs, the audience all synced up. Sometimes size matters.

Touring in support of its first two albums in the new millennium, the unadventurous U2-by-the-numbers "All That You Can't Leave Behind" (2000) and "How to Dismantle an Atomic Bomb" (2004), Bono and the boys were in danger of becoming their generation's Rolling Stones--a rote if occasionally rousing arena act more devoted to selling tickets than to breaking new musical ground.

Released last February, "No Line on the Horizon," the Dublin band's 12th studio album, came as a welcome surprise: Though they didn't always succeed, the musicians at least took chances again, veering from that familiar U2 bombast to deliver their most creative disc since "Achtung Baby" (1991). Unfortunately, the new album also has been the slowest selling of their career, with U.S. sales yet to reach platinum status of a million sold--a fact that can be attributed to no one buying CDs anymore, or to fans being turned off by the group's experimentation.

Eighteen years ago, "Achtung Baby" inspired the Zoo TV Tour, a multi-media sensory assault that stands as the most inventive arena jaunt I've witnessed. The question looming over Soldier Field Saturday night as U2 launched the North American leg of its 360° Tour at the first of two concerts in Chicago was whether the band would uphold the creative spirit of the new album, matching or topping Zoo TV, or play it safe in an attempt to reconnect with conservative fans and please its new partner, giant national concert promoter Live Nation.

The answer, as is often the case with this band, was that it tried to do it all and please everyone. Though it avoided the most ambient and atmospheric of the new tracks crafted with Brian Eno and Daniel Lanois, the group did play a hefty chunk of "No Line on the Horizon," including the strong show opener "Breathe," the hypnotizing "Unknown Caller" and the soaring "Magnificent," which really was.

But in place of the disorienting buzz of Zoo TV, U2 gave us the empty spectacle of the multi-million-dollar stage fans have come to call "the Claw," a ludicrous, fog-belching, crab-like mega-structure that primarily succeeds in dwarfing the musicians onstage, recalling David Bowie's equally silly Glass Spider Tour and making recent Stones stages seem modest in comparison. (U2 really ought to talk to the Flaming Lips, who've been building a more impressive UFO stage out of supplies found at Home Depot at a cost of a few thousand bucks.)

Zoo TV wasn't the superior experience only because of technology, though. The early '90s were the only period in U2's three-decades-plus career when the band dared to laugh at itself, with Bono trading his messiah complex for irony and the Macphisto alter-ego, and the group suggesting that maybe, just maybe, its desire to save the world was a bit pompous and self-aggrandizing.

Alas, the crusaders were back Saturday, linking "Sunday Bloody Sunday" to Iranian pro-democracy demonstrators, turning "Walk On" into an act of solidarity with Aung San Suu Kyi, the Burmese politician under house arrest, and trotting out Archbishop Desmond Tutu on video to make a plea to end poverty and cure AIDS.

U2 at the Millennium Stadium: 'The best gig Cardiff's ever had'

IT was one of the most eagerly anticipated gigs of the year.

And for 70,000 fans, it delivered on every count.

When U2 rolled into Cardiff last night for the last leg of their European 360 Degree Tour, they blew the audience away.

Taking centre stage and most of the audience's breath away in the Millennium Stadium was the £20m set dubbed The Claw - which towered over the main circular stage.

As the iconic front man Bono emerged last night, clad in black and wearing his trademark sunglasses, the crowd erupted with delight.

The almost capacity 70,000 audience made it a record-breaking attendance for any gig at the stadium, outselling Take That's 64,000 audience earlier this year.

After opening with Breathe, from the new album No Line on the Horizon, the band treated fans to a mix of their many hits from the last three decades and new songs from their latest CD.

Highlights included Beautiful Day, Mysterious Ways, Vertigo, Pride and One, as well as newer stand out songs, Get On Your Boots, Crazy Tonight and Magnificent.

Homage was also paid to The Edge's Welsh roots, with Bono confessing to having once had singing lessons from the guitarist's father, Garvin Evans.

"He told me to look after the consonants and the vowels will look after themselves," Bono told the crowd, who lapped up his every word.

The Edge, whose family were in the Cardiff crowd, received a rapturous applause simply by saying "Cymru Am Byth", before the band launched into I Still Haven't Found What I'm Looking For while the adoring masses sang along.

Of course, no U2 gig would be complete without a political message of democracy and freedom, and this was no exception.

The band dedicated their tracks Walk On and MLK to imprisoned Burmese leader Aung San Suu Kyi, and Arch Bishop Desmond Tutu gave an uplifting video message before the song One.

Fans hailed the gig as possibly the greatest spectacle seen in the stadium's 10 year history.

Martin Howarth, 25, from Swansea, said: "I've seen the Red Hot Chili Peppers at the stadium and the Rolling Stones but U2 were much better.

"They get such a mixed crowd because they have been going for so long. Some people knew all the words of the old stuff and others only knew the recent albums.

"You have to give them credit and say they are one of the best live bands in the world.

"I would definitely go back and see them again if they came to Cardiff."

Lloyd James, 24, from Swansea, said: "It was unbelievable. I have never seen a gig like it before.

"The sound was fantastic and the stage looked immense.

"I've been to some pretty special rugby games in the Millennium Stadium before but the atmosphere was something totally different to those.

"It's the best gig Cardiff's ever had."

U2 review: Unforgettable fire in Sheffield

NOT since the vast furnaces of Brown Bayley's roared had the heart of Attercliffe witnessed energy consumption on such a scale.
Then rarely does South Yorkshire host rock stars of the global calibre of U2.

Some 25 years after steel production ceased on the site of Don Valley Stadium, Sheffield's S9 district once again shook, this time with the product of heavy music industry.

Long-time U2 show director Willie Williams will remember the night Bono's boys returned to his hometown.

Having again worked his magic alongside one of music's most innovative set designers, he looked on as the frontman led the 50,000-plus crowd in singing happy birthday to him.

There were other public messages too, not least from South African activist Desmond Tutu ahead of an encore of rousing hit One.

Strip away the politics and worthy causes, though, and most spectators were here to witness a rock colossus that refuses to diminish.

The vastness of the 360° Tour stage - a cross between the oceanic Bond-baddies' base in The Spy Who Loved Me and a garish octopus - gave everyone a view, but robbed some of the immediacy and impact of an act with anthems to burn.

Having established a Sheffield theme via support band The Hours - featuring locally-born singer Ant Genn, whose elderly aunt Margaret earned a name check from Bono - and piped tunes from the Arctic Monkeys and Human League, U2 emerged amid smoke that wafted into a clear night.

A subdued start, drawing on latest album No Line On The Horizon, was brushed aside by the euphoria of Beautiful Day and Elevation before Bono touched on the subject of the day's A level results.

"Take courage because you will have done better than any of us on this stage!" he told teenagers in the audience.

Further proof that exam results don't necessarily rock gods make followed with I Still Haven't Found What I'm Looking For and an Edge/Bono-only acoustic Stuck In A Moment, stirring the masses further.

Then The Unforgettable Fire and City Of Blinding Lights had the bizarre arched stage on the move, its centre elongating like the core of some alien craft.

Never let it be said there isn't still one-upmanship in music.

U2: Still the greatest show in town

They're the self-styled world's biggest band and this is surely the greatest show in town. Given that, U2 could not fail to disappoint their 55,000-strong crowd last night.

Dominating Hampden was the much-hyped "Claw", a 360-degree stage with a 390-tonne, 164-foot glowing blue and orange super-structure, which wafts out dry ice. The sound-and-light system cost a cool £90m to build - and presumably makes U2 less than popular with the neighbours.

Opening act The Hours kicked off the musical spectacular before Glasgow's hottest young band, Glasvegas, warmed the stage during what must have been a surreal departure from their usual, smaller haunts. The band, shortlisted for this year's prestigious Mercury music award, did an admirable job of entertaining a crowd restless with palpable anticipation.

advertisement
300 x 250 U2's set was heavy with songs from new album No Line on the Horizon, which reached number one in 30 countries, but the band's impressive back catalogue formed the backbone of the performance.

A subdued start in the drizzling rain soon warmed up when Bono referenced the band's early introduction to Glasgow in the less auspicious Barrowlands venue before launching into hits Elevation and Beautiful Day. A string of memorable tunes soon had the vast crowd singing and dancing.

Bono claimed the 360 tour to be "intimacy on a grand scale" but the man who has been performing for nigh-on 30 years surely knows that intimacy is the last thing needed when projecting to the peanut gallery. Everything, from his grand arm gestures to the light display beaming from the Claw, had the Irish rock hero controlling the crowd - even during a worthy dedication to Aung San Suu Kyi.

While Bono may fancy himself to be part rocker, part preacher, the crowd were merely there to enjoy the band's litany of tunes, and for those who made the effort to crawl through the clogged traffic, the spectacle was more than worth it.

Review: Telegraph

Review: U2 play to biggest-ever Wembley Stadium crowd

This is a strange time for U2. Their latest album, No Line on the Horizon, has by their standards sold weakly; yet on Friday they played to 88,000 people, the greatest number a band has crammed into Wembley.

It was the first of five stadium gigs in Britain, and part of a world tour that so far has 44 dates. Seemingly, U2 now have fans who won't pay £7 for an album but will pay £65 for a concert ticket.

At least those fans got to see something unusual: rock's tallest stage rig, a 164-ft high monstrosity known as The Claw but which more closely resembles some colossal green crouching insect, its legs speckled with orange pustules. The gimmick of this "360° Tour" is that fans are supposed to get a better view because the stage is in the centre and has no "front", being circular, with fans surrounding it. (Actually, not quite surrounding - 270° Tour would be more apt because there was a sizeable area of pitch with nobody in it.)

Anyway, this was all fine if you were standing near the stage. If you were in the stands, you were still reduced to watching a screen, and the fact that it was a fancier type of screen than normal - cylindrical instead of flat - didn't necessarily make the experience more intimate.

Never mind. People don't come to gigs to gawp at innovative stages, they come to listen to music. But at first, the music was poor. This wasn't the fault of the opening songs - among them Breathe and Elevation - so much as the sound quality. From my seat in the stands, it seemed so hissy that I might as well have been listening via a clapped-out transistor radio.

After about 25 minutes, though, either the sound improved or my ears got used to it, and the band unfurled two lovely ballads: a huge and hymnal I Still Haven't Found What I'm Looking For and a gentle acoustic version of Stuck in a Moment You Can't Get Out Of. They decently kept to a minimum the songs from the dreary No Line on the Horizon: six, from a setlist of 22. The older hits (Sunday Bloody Sunday, Pride, a glittering Where the Streets Have No Name) were best, except for One, ruined by Bono, who sang much of it lackadaisically off the beat. Perhaps he's performed it so many times it bores him. Well, it doesn't bore the fans and they'd paid through the nose to hear it. Still, he didn't overburden us with his politics; just a tribute to Aung San Suu Kyi, the Burmese pro-democracy campaigner, and a cheery video message from Desmond Tutu.

There was a striking scene at the end. Before the final song, Moment of Surrender, Bono ordered the stage lights to be turned off. Suddenly all was a galaxy of mobile phone screens, winking in the dark. U2 can spend what they like on their swanky stage but the most beautiful sight came when we couldn't see it.

Review: Irish Times
by Brian Boyd

U2 come home in triumph

Croke Park rocks: Bono and the band show their edge

FOR BONO the shows so far on U2's 360° tour in Barcelona, Milan, Nice, Berlin and Amsterdam have been merely "warm ups for the main event": a run of three shows in Croke Park starting last night.

Dublin yesterday became U2ville - radio was playing them back-to-back, in city-centre pubs U2 tribute bands were offering up their best ersatz effort and a small army of overseas travellers embarked on "U2 Walking Tours" of the city - taking in their old recording studio at Windmill Lane and their present one at Hanover Quay as well as their old stomping grounds of the Project Arts Centre and the Dandelion Market.

What struck most on the entry roads to Croke Park last night (a stadium with the finest media facilities know to mankind) were the multifarious hues of the fans - travelling Japanese groups mingled with excitable Argentinians while two women in burkas jointly carried a "Iraq loves U2" placard. The demographic make-up of the 80,000 crowd wasn't lost on Bono who said from the stage: "I know there's a lot of out-of-towners here tonight, that's because they know the best place to see U2 live is right here in Dublin".

Taking to the stage shortly before 9pm with a piercing sun still in the sky, the full technological bells and whistles of the much-vaunted "Claw" were lost somewhat in the glare. Due to the particular configuration of Croke Park, the 360° tour had to become the 270° tour for the night that was in it - with Hill 16 unavailable.

They gave it socks from the start. Acknowledging the stadium's historical significance and its proximity to the Royal Canal, Bono dedicated a cover of "The Auld Triangle" to Ronnie Drew, noting the song "was the greatest sound, because it is the sound of home".

There was a brief intermission early on for a public service announcement a la Bono. He went off on a self-help trip saying "Look at us Irish people - we are smart, sexy and undefeatable ... and there's nothing we can't do if we believe it ourselves".

The music itself is familiar - it's part of this country's cultural soundtrack but even the "I can't stand them but I never miss one of their live shows" contingent (ie the media guest list) were reaching for the superlatives: this was one of the band's strongest ever live outings. An achingly poignant acoustic version of "Stuck In A Moment"; an evocative "Unforgettable Fire; a rough-hewn garage rock "Vertigo" and a Balearic Beat version of "I'll Go Crazy" all put the gig into warp speed.

A tribute to Burmese leader Aung San Suu Kyi during "Walk On" saw 60-odd people march around the perimeter of the stage wearing the mask of the political prisoner - an affecting sight.

As darkness fell, the "Claw" crept into life. The biggest ever musical stage structure (at 164ft high it is double the size of the previous biggest ever stage - at one point descending so low it almost touched the artists' heads.

U2 ended with a broody "With or Without You" and a sadly soulful "Moment Of Surrender" (the song of the night).

It was a sort of homecoming - and a type of triumph.

Bono, U2 rock Dublin as world tour hits new high

DUBLIN - Bono and U2 rocked more than 80,000 fans in Dublin as the Irish supergroup's latest world tour hit new emotional highs Friday night on home soil.

A deafening roar welcomed the Dubliners as they launched their three-concert homestand at Croke Park, Ireland's biggest stadium and a cathedral to Irish nationalism. The band's "360" tour - featuring its underselling 12th studio album, "No Line on the Horizon" - switches from Europe to North America in September.

"We are so young - as a nation!" shouted the 49-year-old lead singer Bono.

Crowds braced for downpours threw their raincoats aside as an unexpected sunset gave way to a starry Dublin night.

All of the "360" concerts feature a stunning feat of engineering: the four-taloned "Claw" stage. The 390-ton, green cabana stands more than 10 stories above the band as they strut through the crowds on moving bridges and a ring-shaped stage with concertgoers inside and out.

The U2 touring juggernaut deploys three "Claws" - each costing euro100 million ($140 million) and capable of holding up more than 150 tons of lighting, pyrotechnics and giant TV screens - that are continually being assembled and disassembled in different concert locations.

Before taking the stage, Bono joked that the band's performances in Barcelona, Milan, Paris, Nice, Berlin and Amsterdam were just "rehearsals" for the Dublin concerts.

And in front of a crowd waving flags from as far away as Brazil and Japan, Bono said tens of thousands had traveled worldwide to Dublin. "You know the best place to see U2 live is right here," he said to cheers.

The U2 gigs are delivering an estimated euro50 million ($70 million) boost to Ireland's recession-ravaged economy, with most Dublin hotels booked solid for weeks. Even the Dublin Criminal Court shut down jury deliberations for the weekend because too many jurors had U2 tickets.

Nonetheless, Ireland's descent into double-digit unemployment could be seen in the stands. Several thousand seats remained empty - the first non-sellout of a U2 gig in Dublin since 1980.

Irish safety laws also barred fans from the most hallowed end of Croke Park: standing-room-only concrete stands called Hill 16.

Hill 16 was built on rubble from Ireland's first, failed rebellion against British rule in 1916. Ireland won independence six years later, but not before British security forces made Hill 16 the most infamous killing ground of the conflict, shooting to death a dozen spectators and athletes at a Gaelic football match.

The day become known as Ireland's first Bloody Sunday, the inspiration for U2's 1983 anti-war anthem "Sunday Bloody Sunday."

"We're undefeatable!" Bono shouted. "Hill 16 right behind us. Out of the rubble of a revolution in 1916 they built a beautiful stadium, and more importantly they built a great country. And there is nothing we can't do if we believe in ourselves."

High school students Paul "Bono" Hewson, guitarist Dave "The Edge" Evans, drummer Larry Mullen and bassist Adam Clayton came together to form U2 in Dublin 33 years ago.

Two decades after 'Achtung Baby', U2 rocks Berlin

U2 rocked Berlin on Saturday, returning to the German city where almost 20 years ago the Irish band came to reinvent themselves and make "Achtung Baby", for many fans their best album.

"Thank you for coming to our 'grosser party' (big party)," singer Bono told a crowd of 90,000 people during a two-hour set in the Olympic Stadium built by Hitler in the 1930s. "We wrote many songs here in Berlin."

U2 came in 1990 to get inspiration from a city undergoing profound change in the wake of a peaceful revolution that pulled down the Berlin Wall the previous November and brought to an end communist East Germany.

The album that they came up with, "Achtung Baby", marked a new direction both musically and visually for the group, and would go on to sell in huge numbers and receive widespread critical acclaim.

The video for the best-known song, "One", was shot in Berlin with clips of spluttering Trabants, the archetypal Eastern Bloc car that also featured, suspended over the stage, in the high-tech "Zoo TV" world tour that followed.

The current "360" tour taking in 14 European cities before heading to North America includes an enormous spaceship-like structure straddling the stage flashing out graphics and lighting effects and blasting out a wall of sound.

The Berlin concert included a mixture of classic U2 songs like "Sunday Bloody Sunday" and "Mysterious Ways" as well as new songs from their latest album "No Line On The Horizon."

With Bono a prominent anti-poverty activist, the concert also had a political edge, with a rendition of "Happy Birthday" for Nelson Mandela and a song dedicated to detained Myanmar opposition leader Aung San Suu Kyi.

"This woman has been under house arrest for the best part of 20 years," Bono said. "I would like to sing her an Irish lullaby."

U2 Expand, Delight During Two-Night Stand In Paris

With the alien ant farm landscapes of vast, open-air stadium venues, the (mostly) unhindered sightlines peeking out from behind the claw arms of a mothership-like stage, and the glowing starfield of thousands of cell phones lighting up during tunes like "One" and "With Or Without You", U2 appears to have done a fine job making "space" the dominant aesthetic theme of both its latest album and the evolving 360 Degrees tour.

That theme was further augmented during the band's latest stop at Paris's enormous, 90,000- capacity Stade de France, returning almost four years to the day of their last visits here - on July 9th and 10th, 2005 - for the Vertigo tour.

'Thank you for coming out and thank you for giving us a great life,' Bono crowed to the packed audience. 'Thank you for giving us the chance to build this madness, this space station.'

The statement probably referred to more than just the band's extravagant theatrics; if anything, U2 probably wanted to be in orbit more than ever following a recent volley of complaints fired by environmentalists at the fledgling tour's carbon footprint. The complaints are similar to those directed at other big bands perceived to be environmentally conscious, such as Radiohead, and seem more designed to expose a perceived hypocrisy in easy targets than to raise any sort of valid point about real environmental risk posed by truly dangerous entities. Nevertheless, the band has purchased carbon offsets for any environmental damage the tour might cause.

On Saturday night, the inhabitants of the International Space Station made a repeat appearance on The Claw's circular screens, engaging in prerecorded banter with the band. Guy Laliberte - billionaire founder of Cirque de Soleil, and soon-to-be resident of the Station - also received a shout-out during "In A Little While".

"We have somebody with us tonight who is about to be the first clown in space," Bono joked, referring to former stilt-walker and fire-eater Laliberte.

While the much-maligned "masks" made an appearance once again, those looking for a bit of levity from Bono's politics received it during the Sunday night encore, when the singer engaged in a brief E.T. impersonation before show finale "Moment of Surrender".

He was also in a joking mood during a brief interview for French television the day before; after Larry Mullen, Jr. cordially complimented the Stade de France as "an incredible place," Bono quickly added, "Of all stadiums to get to trash, this is the most beautiful."

The direction of the Paris gigs indicated that the nightly setlist is solidifying into something fairly consistent, at least for this leg of the tour; the opening four songs of new material have not changed, and neither has the three-song encore, expanded only once so far to include "I'll Go Crazy If I Don't Go Crazy Tonight" during the second night in Barcelona. "In A Little While" and "Stuck in a Moment" - from All That You Can't Leave Behind - continue to be interchanged, with the former being performed Saturday, and the latter making an appearance on Sunday.

Sunday night's show also featured some surprises, with the tour debut of a solo-free "Mysterious Ways", and an electric version of "Angel of Harlem". The ever-expanding "I'll Go Crazy If I Don't Go Crazy Tonight" was preceded by brief renditions of David Bowie's "Let's Dance" - the first time the band has performed it in any form - and K.C. and the Sunshine Band's "That's the Way (I Like It), making its first appearance since 1997's Popmart Tour.

Crowds were energetic and enthusiastic both nights, the floor a rolling wave of activity during songs both new ("Get On Your Boots") and old ("I Still Haven't Found What I'm Looking For"). The crowd briefly took over singing duties on the latter from Bono during Sunday night's show, with both band and singer dropping out during the first verse to let the audience build the song's momentum.

Stand By Thee: U2 Completes Its Mission In Milan

The four months of U2's world tour finished the fourth date after a two-night stand in Milan, Italy on July 7th and 8th, 2009. Returning to San Siro Stadium for the first time since the Vertigo Tour (when the band recorded the DVD that was released as a bonus with the deluxe version of the U2 18 Singles package in 2006), these Milan shows were filled with significance, signaled by serious speeches and special occasions.

U2's visit to Italy coincided with the G8 meeting of world leaders, and Bono seized the moment to scold controversial Italian leader Silvio Berlusconi for not living up to previous promises concerning Africa. Bono praised Italy but not its leader: "Italians have many gifts to the world, modern physics, the Renaissance, the piano, the gift of singing from Pavarotti to Puccini. You have so many gifts. In the next few days your leader will have to decide where he stands on the gift of life that lives beyond these shores."

Fans most concerned about the evolving setlist saw certain patterns emerge: a core of twenty songs provide the anchor for this leg of the tour, opening and closing with tunes from No Line On the Horizon; after the sixth song, the band has included its widest mix of surprises and its daily changes; despite the obvious and overwhelming similarities between gigs, no two shows have been precisely the same. And Wednesday brought the tour's first appearance of an acoustic version of "Stuck In A Moment."

On Tuesday night, Bono and the band celebrated the 18th birthday of actor Eve Hewson, the daughter of Ali and Bono, born in the seventh hour of the seventh day of the seventh month back in 1991, a few months before Achtung Baby was released. After Bono told the audience that Eve is the least shy of the entire Hewson tribe, Eve got kisses from Adam and Edge and exchanged eye contact with Larry. Then, the singer coaxed 90,000 people to sing her "Happy Birthday" before the band played "Party Girl." During the song, dad and daughter shared a dance and a few sips of champagne. Fans might recall that Eve danced with Bono during "Mysterious Ways" on the Slane Castle DVD from 2001. Read Full Article

U2 Keep It Crazy For Second Barcelona Show

After one day off, U2 returned for the second night of the 360 tour in Barcelona on July 2. Fans everywhere wondered whether the show would differ from the inaugural gig. Would the setlist change in length, order, or variety? How might the band build from the first show's success without getting stagnant?

Around 10pm local time, the band took the stage following "Space Oddity" by David Bowie. Before the extended intro to "Breathe" (replete Larry's riveting drums and Adam's inviting bass), before we hear Bono change the date in the song's lyrics, another song plays over the PA. The wild speculation by fans over the source of this track is intriguing, with many suggesting it is an unreleased tune from a forthcoming album to be released between legs of the tour, much like Zooropa in 1993.

After the gig opened with the same set of songs from the new record that we heard on opening night, Bono once again thanked the people of Barcelona before "Beautiful Day." The singer sounded genuinely grateful when he "thanked the neighborhood" for letting them "make a joyful noise" for the days preceding opening night.

This appreciation, though, may not be enough to mute the formal noise complaints filed against the band. Various sources are reporting that "authorities might fine U2 for rocking too long and loudly during rehearsals for their latest world tour, the city council said yesterday."

When "Beautiful Day" ended with a snippet from the Beatles' "Here Comes The Sun," the sought after setlist changes and surprises were soon to follow. Trading "Angel of Harlem" as the Michael Jackson tribute of the night for "Desire," Bono also chose a new Jackson snippet to share, belting the chorus of "Billie Jean."

Apparently, one good surprise deserves another, so the tour debut of "Party Girl" came next. Barely into in the song, Bono brought a party girl called Melissa onstage to hoist the singer high and then share a bottle of champagne. The story has it that he remembered her from joining him in the spotlight at a previous show on a previous tour. It appears some girls have all the luck.

The innovations continued with the first-ever performance of "Electrical Storm," a 2002 single released with the The Best of 1990-2000 compilation. While the single never penetrated the US charts, it did well in the rest of the world. Hardcore fans call these moments "U2 history," and the reaction among the faithful was universally enthusiastic. Perhaps the summer weather had something to do with the choice. In the song, Bono sings, "It's hot as hell, honey, in this room/Sure hope the weather will break soon/The air is heavy, heavy as a truck/Need the rain to wash away our bad luck." Read Full Review

Review: Times Online
by Pete Paphides

U2 at Nou Camp Stadium, Barcelona

It's only rock'n'roll, but for a band of U2's stature, it sure takes some organizing these days. The 120 trucks needed to freight the 164ft centrepiece of the group's new 360° Tour emptied out their load two weeks ahead of this, the first of 44 stadium shows.

After opening with four songs from the group's current album No Line On The Horizon, Bono explained his group's decision to begin their latest adventure in Barcelona. "This is where we wanted to build a space station, designed by Gaudi in the capital of surrealism." But if the huge green four-legged edifice on the Nou Camp pitch - christened The Claw - was inspired by Gaudi, no-one had told the group's stage and lighting designer, Willie Williams.

Some weeks previously, he had already said that the intent had been to create something between the Theme Building at Los Angeles Airport and the fairground machine in Toy Story.

If nothing else though, it was a good reminder that the man who persuaded George Bush to sanction the largest ever response by a Western Government to the Aids crisis is nothing if not a charmer - or, as the opening song Breathe put it, the last in "a long line of travelling sales people."

The product, in this case, hardly needed pushing. U2's Spanish fans were already cheering U2 before a lone Larry Mullen came on and roused the throng into action. Thereafter, what ensued was a cheer so unremitting that, at times, it scarcely abated.

Dedicating Angel of Harlem to Michael Jackson, Bono - dressed in customary leathers and amber shades - deftly detoured into verses from Jackson hits such as Man In The Mirror and Don't Stop Til You Get Enough as his group free-wheeled the song to a rickety climax. Better still was a version of 1999's Walk On, given solely to draw attention to Burmese Prime Minister-elect Aung San Suu Kyi, who has spent most of the years since her 1990 election under house arrest by the Burmese junta. As an eerie procession of people, their faces obscured by masks bearing Suu Kyi's face, paced the outer walkway, the new focus of the song seemed to draw out the singer's most tender performance of the evening.

Over the years U2 have experimented with many different ways of presenting their music, and yet the basic thing at which Bono uniquely excels has remained unchanged. The expression of holy love in a pop song fires up something in Bono that - whilst not hugely hip in rock'n'roll terms - utterly disarms you. At the Nou Camp, these seemed to be the songs that teased out the most goosebumps. I Still Haven't Found What I'm Looking For would have still shaken the foundations, even if Bono hadn't draped himself in a Spanish flag and begun singing Primal Scream's Moving On Up over the final minute of the song. Having lain dormant for twenty years, The Unforgettable Fire found its way back into the U2 live set, vast ambient synth oscillations and all, sounding as haunting as ever.

Carried on the back of The Edge's stratospheric guitar lines, Magnificent showed a band who, on a good day, can still match the peaks of their imperial years. But, at times, this fell well short of being one of those good days.

A seemingly scripted satellite link-up with the orbiting International Space Station was intended to remind us that we all had a duty to look after "the beautiful blue earth". Instead, it reminded us that satellite link-ups can drain even a packed Nou Camp of all its atmosphere if allowed to go on for long enough.

Their attempt to reimagine I'll Go Crazy If I Don't Go Crazy Tonight as a mid-set trance-techno wig-out did their dignity no favours whatsoever.

And, impressive as the huge quadruped was, you couldn't help feeling that this "claw" - designed to engage all of the crowd no matter what their vantage point - was ultimately an impediment to intimacy. Playing directly beneath the structure, the four members of U2 had never seemed so tiny. Using the walkways and bridges to reach out to their fans was fine, but only as long as the technology served to assist them. For whatever reason, the group seemed to lose all contact with each other for One. As The Edge soldiered on, his guitar wildly out of tune, a visibly agitated Bono lost his place altogether. He instructed his guitarist to stop, but the ensuing version was no less agonizing.

Some 40ft away, Mullen and Adam Clayton's mortified corpsing said it all. And yet, to a crowd who had come to celebrate their favourite band, it all seemed to go unnoticed. Having donned the hallowed Barcelona shirt a few minutes before, the last in a long line of travelling sales people led his band into an intense valedictory With Or Without You. As a lesson in keeping the customer happy - regardless of the product - you had to admire it.

U2 Tour 2009 Setlist Leaked

According to Chartattack their set list for the tour has leaked among various fan sites.

According to popular fan site atu2.com, the band's rehearsal last night (June 18th)featured approximately 24 songs with a mixture of well-known hits and a few obscure numbers from their back catalog, including "Drowning Man" from 1983's War album.

Not all the songs on the setlist, which is below, were performed during the rehearsal, but the show looks like it includes seven songs off the recently released No Line On The Horizon. And no, there's nothing from Zooropa or Pop on the setlist.

The U2 360 Tour makes its way through Europe for most of the summer before the North American leg is launched at Chicago's Soldier Field on Sept. 12. A two-night stand at Toronto's Rogers Centre and one night at Vancouver's BC Place are the lone Canadian gigs.

U2 wants to rework early music

Irish band U2 provided a prelude to its upcoming world tour with a brief private show on Wednesday for just 950 fans who got a chance to make news by asking the band some tough questions.

Among the revelations from the banter with the crowd: U2 is considering reworking and re-releasing some early work including its debut album, 1980's "Boy," which included U2's first big hit, "I Will Follow."

"I would love to sing that album again and finish that," said lead singer Bono. He said the band was rushed from the studio producing "Boy" because they "couldn't afford another hour."

"The early records, there's some beautiful songs that feel a little bit unfinished to us," he said.

Pressed on what he'd like to change, the Irish rocker singled out his "phony English accent" on "Boy."

The back-and-forth with the crowd in Boston's neighboring city of Somerville followed an energetic set of five songs from U2's new album, "No Line on the Horizon," which debuted at No. 1 in 30 countries, including the United States and Britain.

An early contender for biggest record of the year, "No Line" is being closely watched by a business seeking to reverse deep declines in album sales. It has been described as the band's most experimental album since 1991.

Mainstream critics have generally warmed to it. Rolling Stone calls it a "five-star masterpiece," and Mojo magazine gave it four stars. But influential music website Pitchfork describes it as "rather pitiful."

In the 95-year-old Somerville Theater -- a brick venue originally designed for stage shows and vaudeville -- U2 tested four of its new releases: "Get On Your Boots," "Magnificent," "Breathe" and "I'll Go Crazy If I Don't Crazy Tonight."

The band ended the show, broadcast live on radio, with 2005 hit single "Vertigo."

FULL-COURT PROMOTION

In the past two weeks, U2 has played on the roof of the BBC in London, had a street temporarily named after it for a week in New York, and performed an unprecedented five-night engagement on CBS' "Late Show with David Letterman."

Wednesday's show capped a three-night, syndicated-radio event across the United States that included one-hour interviews conducted in Los Angeles on Monday and Chicago on Tuesday.

About 2,000 people gathered outside the theater, held back by metal barricades and hoping to catch a glimpse of the band. Tickets to the free concert were distributed through radio station promotions and to guests selected by U2's label.

Asked which songs he would never tire of playing and which he never wanted to play again, guitarist The Edge said there were plenty of old U2 songs he's happy to avoid, "There are so many U2 songs that I am quite happy not to play. But the thing is we still want to rewrite some of them, and who knows, we may at some point re-release a few of our early albums with a few changes," he said.

There were several other revelations from the Q&A session moderated by an MTV Networks reporter.

The Edge revealed that even his mother calls him "The Edge." Bass guitarist Adam Clayton took a shot at English rock star Sting, saying: "Sting's only problem is that he is too cool. He is too cool to be cool."

And drummer Larry Mullen Jr. said one of his most memorable onstage moments with the band was when a woman got up on stage and handcuffed herself to Bono's leg.

U2 No Line on the Horizon Reviews

LIsten to No Line On The Horizon

U2's "No Line on The Horizon" has been getting solid reviews so far, here's a sample from some of the main music publications:

Rollingstone.com

David Fricke gives it 5 stars:

"I was born to sing for you/I didn't have a choice but to lift you up," Bono declares early on this album, in a song called "Magnificent." He does it in an oddly low register, a heated hush just above the shimmer of the Edge's guitar and the iron-horse roll of bassist Adam Clayton and drummer Larry Mullen Jr. Bono is soon up in thin air with those familiar rodeo yells, on his way to the chorus, which ends with him just singing the word "magnificent," repeating it with relish, stretching the syllables.

But he does it not in self-congratulation, more like wonder and respect, as if in middle age, on his band's 11th studio album, he still can't believe his gift - and luck. Bono knows he was born with a good weapon for making the right kind of trouble: the clean gleam and rocket's arc of that voice. "It was one dull morning/I woke the world with bawling," he boasted in "Out of Control," written by Bono on his 18th birthday and issued on U2's Irish debut EP. read full review @ Rollingstone.com

Andrew Perry seems very impressed:

Coldplay may have conquered the Grammys a few weeks ago, but the ceremony opened with a warning shot from the world's premier rock band, a dazzling performance by U2 of their comeback single Get on Your Boots which shouted out their return.

Their 12th studio album is, like its immediate predecessors, less a record than an event, breathtaking in its ambition and its shimmering, mesmerising and sometimes outright volcanic sound.

Within the band's army of production staff, Brian Eno and Daniel Lanois were, this time, the key figures, integral to the writing and playing of the music, while Steve Lillywhite streamlined the sound for mass consumption.

Auspiciously, this is the same backroom line-up that made The Unforgettable Fire (1984) and Achtung Baby (1991). Like those, No Line on the Horizon is a bold, beautiful and highly speculative re-imagining of U2's music. read full review @ Telegraph.co.uk
