THE BOYS FROM DUBLIN
The main reason for my choice is, besides being a great band, the boys from Dublin have given so much to others. Throughout their career, as a band and as individuals, they have campaigned for human rights and social justice causes, including Amnesty International, the ONE Campaign, and Bono's Debt, AIDS, Trade in Africa Campaign. But I'll tell you more about that later. Right now, I want to introduce you to the IRISH BAND, "U2."
Meet the Band
This was when they started in 1976
Lead Singer and Guitar: Bono (Paul Hewson)
Guitar, Keyboards and Vocals: The Edge (Dave Evans)
Bass Guitar: Adam Clayton
Drums and Percussion: Larry Mullen Jr.

Picture: (left to right) The Edge, Mullen, Clayton, Bono
They've sold more than 170 million albums worldwide and have won more Grammy Awards than any other band , they are one of the most important and most exciting bands of the last 20 years. They are of course, U2.
If music has a conscience its name is U2. Bono was co-founder of EDUN who labels itself as a "socially conscious clothing company" which exists to assist in increasing employment and trade for developing regions, especially Sub-Saharan Africa.

A little older ... a lot wiser.

The last gang in town, U2, has had a wonderful week on David Letterman's Late Night Show. I've been enjoying that so much that I thought.. oops I've sort of let this lens go and now I'm definitely going to do something about it. Watch me roar!
Bono Awarded Nobel "Man of Peace" Prize
Well done Bono!

Paris Mayor Bertrand Delanoe, host of the event, handed Bono the Peace Summit Award in the presence of five Nobel winners.
Bono told the crowd, which included fellow Nobel laureates, "This is a very big award for me, because let's be honest this is as close as I am going to get - as close as a rock star is ever going to get to the Nobel Peace Prize. I am an over-awarded, over-rewarded rock star. You are the people who do the real work. So I am very, very pleased to be in such esteemed company."
A big congrats to Bono for all his efforts!
Formation and early years (1976-1979)
The band formed in Dublin on 25 September 1976 under the name of "Feedback" only to become "The Hype" in March 1977 and "U2" in 1978. Over the years there were a few changes in members playing in the band but Clayton, Mullen, Bono & The Edge remained.U2's first release, an Ireland-only EP entitled "Three", was released in September 1979, and was the band's first Irish chart success.
Picture: U2 Teenage Band
First Album - BOY
BOY, the debut album released by U2, October 20, 1980 followed by U2's first tour of Europe and USA., produced by Steve Lillywhite, received positive reviews. Common themes among the album's songs are the dreams and frustrations of adolescence. The album included the band's first United Kingdom hit single, "I Will Follow." The song focuses on Bono's childhood and the loss of his mother at the age of 14.
Despite being unpolished, this group's early live performances demonstrated U2's potential.
From Heroes to Superstars

Lyrics: Beautiful Day
My favorite U2 Song

The heart is a bloom
Shoots up through the stony ground
There's no room
No space to rent in this town
You're out of luck
And the reason that you had to care
The traffic is stuck
And you're not moving anywhere
You thought you'd found a friend
To take you out of this place
Someone you could lend a hand
In return for grace
It's a beautiful day
Sky falls, you feel like
It's a beautiful day
Don't let it get away

You're on the road
But you've got no destination
You're in the mud
In the maze of her imagination
You love this town
Even if that doesn't ring true
You've been all over
And it's been all over you
It's a beautiful day
Don't let it get away
It's a beautiful day
Touch me,
Take me to that other place
Teach me,
I know I'm not a hopeless case

See the world in green and blue
See China right in front of you
See the canyons broken by cloud
See the tuna fleets clearing the sea out
See the Bedouin fires at night
See the oil fields at first light
And see the bird with a leaf in her mouth
After the flood all the colors came out
It was a beautiful day
Don't let it get away
Beautiful day
Touch me,
Take me to that other place
Reach me,
I know I'm not a hopeless case

Here is the last verse.
.day beautiful a Was .now it need don't you have don't you What .somehow it feel can you know don't you What .now it need don't you have don't you What
As you'll notice, the last verse is copied in red. Can you figure out what this says? If not, watch the YouTube below. You can even sing along if you'd like to.(Nobody is listening.)

SPIDER-MAN Musical 'Swings' Closer to Broadway Debut
U2 music

The UK TimesOnline site is reporting that SPIDERMAN may be ready to battle his most powerful foe of all - the Broadway slump. The news service reports the musical based on the Marvel comic book hero, written by Bono and the Edge from U2, will indeed take residency in the Hilton Theatre early next year as the "chilly wind of a US recession" blows through the theatre district of New York City.
According to recent reports Julie Taymo is confirmed to direct and Bono and The Edge are writing the lyrics and score. Rumor has it that the musical could open as early as early 2009.
Everyone knows that "Spider-Man (Peter Benjamin Parker) is a fictional character, a Marvel Comics superhero, created by writer-editor Stan Lee and artist Steve Ditko. The character first appeared in Amazing Fantasy #15 (Aug. 1962), and has since gone on to become one of the most popular, enduring and commercially successful superheroes worldwide, and is arguably Marvel's most famous character. When Spider-Man first appeared in the early 1960s, teenagers in superhero comic books were usually relegated to the role of sidekick to the series' main character. The Spider-Man series broke ground by featuring Peter Parker, a teenage high school student to whose "self-obsessions with rejection, inadequacy, and loneliness" young readers could relate. Spider-Man has since appeared in various media, including several animated and live-action television series, syndicated newspaper comic strips and a successful series of films starring actor Tobey Maguire as the character.
Marvel has featured Spider-Man in several comic book series, the first titled The Amazing Spider-Man. Over the years, the Peter Parker character has developed from shy high school student to troubled college student to a married teacher and a member of the superhero team the New Avengers," state press notes.
Taymor, who won a Tony Award for directing the Broadway musical The Lion King and who is also known for equally visually imaginative films such as Titus and Frida, helmed the recent Metropolitan Opera production of The Magic Flute, as well as productions such as Juan Darien, The Tempest, and Oedipus Rex.
Trivia
Where was 'Beautiful Day' video filmed?

Many flights to Paris land in the Charles de Gaulle International Airport, France's largest airport. The airport, named after the national hero and former president, is where U2 filmed their video for "Beautiful Day".

A better title would have been "U2: A Scrapbook." Each chapter, organized by year, has a solid introduction. There is a running day-to-day entry of what the band was doing. There are quotes from the band and its important players made in the past and there are reflections about events that happened as many as 32 years ago. That's a spoiler; the band first jammed together in 1976.
Ali - The Green Goddess
Bono and his wife, Ali, have been married for 26 years, or 150 celebrity years. They are the proud parents of four beautiful children.Although she wanted to become a nurse, Ali gave up her career ambitions to foster her relationship with her new husband. She received a Bachelor of Arts in Sociology and Political Science from University College Dublin (UCD) in 1989, shortly after giving birth to her first daughter, Jordan. Before that, Ali worked in a motor insurance company, and with her father, in his electrical business.
Ali is a founder of the EDUN fashion label, which encourages fair trade with third world nations and the abolition of sweatshops and child labour.
INSPI(RED) against AIDS
Free issues of (RED)WIRE Magazine
An aspiring project headed by the leader of U2 Bono and Bobby Shriver with a complete new approach to the problem of fighting against AIDS in Africa. All thing being equal, they are not.
As world consumers, we have tremendous power. What we collectively choose to buy, or not buy can change the course of life and history on this planet.
(RED) is a simple idea but powerful. Now, you have a choice. There are (RED) credit
cards, (RED) phones, (RED) shoes, (RED) fashion brands. This does not mean they are all red in color, although some are.
We believe that when consumers are offered this choice and the products meet their needs, they will choose (RED). And when they choose (RED) over non-(RED)then more brands will choose to become (RED) because it will make good business sense to do so. And more lives will be saved.
(RED) is not a charity. It is simply a business model. You buy (RED) stuff, we get the money and buy the pills and distribute them. They take the pills and stay alive. The get to continue to take care of their families and contribute socially and economically in their communities. If they don't get the pills, they die. We want to give them the pills, and we can. And you can. It's easy. All you have to do is upgrade your choice.
A really simple idea and a brilliant realization. The originality of this projects is that, if you want to give money for buying pills for AIDS, there is no need to go to the bank or transfer money through credit cards.
It's enough to buy a beautiful and stylish (RED) thing.
Something from this list may fit:
And sure. All in (RED). Can you imagine (RED) Intel Core Duo 2 Mac?
This is a case when a small idea became a key to the realisation of a big one. Cool. You just go to the shop, buy a red thing and that will, in addition, do a good deed.
Especially for those, who don't usually give to charity. As said above, (RED) is a business model. Organizers get their profit and the rest of money is transfered on GlobalFund's account. There is more than 10 million dollars transferred at this time.
And what have you done to save humanity?
If you buy a (RED) product or sign up for a (RED) service, at no cost to you, a (RED) company will give some of it's profits to buy and distribute anti-retroviral medicine to our brothers and sisters dying of AIDS in Africa.
RED has recently unveiled a simple way for people to receive music from artists they love and artists they will discover through RED. And subscribing will create a new revenue stream for artists and buy life-saving medicine for those living with AIDS in Africa. Please see the '(RED)WIRE' link below.
(RED)WIRE is an online magazine that supports people infected with HIV in Africa.
Subscribers are asked to pay ÂŁ4 per month ($5.US) in return for four exclusive tracks, with half the proceeds going to Bono's Red charity.
A number of exclusive songs featured on the service are being streamed on MSN now.
Among the tracks is a new Jay-Z song featuring Santogold 'Brooklyn Go Hard', U2 covering Greg Lake's 'I Believe In Father Christmas' and a collaboration between Coldplay and Kylie Minogue entitled 'Lhuna'.
(RED)WIRE is not yet available in Canada, but according to the PR company, "details are forthcoming about the Canada launch." However, if you are not in Canada, sign up to receive the first two issues of (RED)WIRE free.

Bands Jostling to Dethrone U2
Kings of Leon & Killers
Kings of Leon
Of all the bands jostling to be the "new U2" this year, the Kings of Leon have come closest. Like the Irish band, the Tennessee brothers come from a place where country music is more popular than rock and have aspired to new-wave edginess and sophistication.
They too have had that outsiders' drive, making four albums in five years, each more ambitious and popular than the last. The most recent, Only by the Night, went straight in at number one this year and this nationwide arena tour sold out in seconds.
And like Bono, the Kings of Leon are infused with an unspecified zeal.
Ironically, the characteristic that makes the Kings of Leon sound edgy and contemporary compared to Nineties rock bands such as Faith No More or Soundgarden, or even glam-rockers such as Def Leppard, is also the thing that can make a whole evening of their music drag.
Their sound is all built around riffs: rhythms that roll on, mantra-like, without a break on the horizon. They don't do choruses so much as punctuate songs with a crie de coeur. The effect is mesmerising for the converted, but without melodies or hooks there is less to catch the passing bystander.
You'll have to do better boys if you want to be the new U2!
Killing It
Is Brandon Flowers of Killers band losing Touch? Is he even "Human" or is he one with the "Spaceman" described on the space oddity of track three of the band's latest release? It's all over the news that The Killers want to dethrone U2 as the best band in the world, but "The World We Live In" is not the world Bono and boys lived in back in the day.
Truth be told, we don't need another U2; with the Irish quartet's next album here, U2 still own that brand and are more than willing to re-sell and re-release it in every form of re-packaging imaginable. I wish the current generation of epic pretenders would just cross-reference themselves. Brandon: be Brandon. If today's post-modern pop is about anything, it's about the constantly blogged, logged, and too often loathed self. Let that self shine in all its fault, fame, and fancy. And let me tell you why.
Nobody remembers the U2 wannabes from the 1980s. As much as some of us loved Simple Minds, The Alarm, Big Country, and The Waterboys, nobody is really talking about them-much less listening to them in 2009. With "Viva La Vida", Coldplay tried to be U2 by bringing Brian Eno into the studio, and they proved that imitation is not always the greatest form of flattery. Sometimes imitation is just plagiarism of the plainest and most pathetic variety.
Without Bono, Paddy is nothing ...
and he knows it

We are returning to a time when our fate is inextricably entwined with that of U2,
It would be wrong to think that there was no direct benefit for Paddy in the inauguration of Obama. After all, U2 performed at the pre-inauguration concert, and U2 will almost certainly be the only Irish business to make a profit in 2009. A very big profit, no doubt, with a new album and a world tour.
And let's get one thing straight here: it is absurd to suggest that the release of the new U2 single was timed to coincide with the inauguration of the President of the United States.
These days, it is far more likely that the inauguration of the President of the United States will be timed to coincide with the release of the new U2 single.
And for poor old Paddy there must be some encouragement in the fact that U2 is not just the only business that will make a profit in 2009, and probably next year and the year after that, it was also making a profit in 1999, and in 1989, and possibly even in 1979.
So it seems that we are back where we started, with the only Irish guys who actually know how the world works.
Not only have they achieved the remarkable feat of making money before, during, and after the Celtic Tiger, they have also apparently managed to hold on to it -- we didn't see Bono holding the microphone at the Mansion House, asking questions about Anglo Irish Bank.
We won't be seeing the lads getting wiped out by some Ponzi scheme anytime soon.
But we did see them on stage with Obama, and for all Irish people, good and bad, this was quite a relief. The way things have panned out for us, we are looking once more to U2 to embody our version of the trickle-down theory. What is good for them is good for Paddy.
Once more, they have become a vital national interest. Once more, they have become perhaps our only national interest.
And in this volatile environment it is now virtually a matter of plain fact that to talk down the new U2 single, and especially the new U2 album, is to talk down the economy.
"Fantastic" was the reported verdict of Neil McCormick of The Telegraph on hearing the latest material, and since. I don't think we'll do better than "fantastic", let that good word go out to all the peoples of the world: FANTASTIC!
In recent years we had become quite lackadaisical about U2, even feeling free to disrespect them the way we used to find fault with albums by Thin Lizzy, little realising what was waiting for us further on up the road.
Enough of that, it is just another little luxury that we can't afford any more.
That time is over, and young people in particular should be made aware that the Irish .. and that means all of us .. are now returning to a time when our fate is inextricably entwined with that of "four Irish boys from the northside of Dublin".
A couple of years ago, when Paddy was still a bit cocky, he'd be quibbling with the factual accuracy of that line. He'd be jeering that two of the boys are not Irish by birth; that they are hardly "boys" either, since Bono is now older than Obama himself; and that they may be from the geographical "northside", but they are not "northsiders" as that term is rightly understood.
So Paddy would be laughing to himself, suggesting that it might be as truthful for Bono to be introducing the band to Obama as "four international industrialists from the South of France".
But Paddy isn't laughing anymore. He knows that he needs Bono up there, saying whatever he needs to say to get the job done.
Paddy knows what Paddy has done .. essentially, since around the time of Zooropa, Paddy scooped the equivalent of a massive compo payout. And despite his protestations of competence and even brilliance, he has done what Paddy has traditionally done in these circumstances .. he has spent it on drinking and gambling and he has added a few new-fangled perversions, such as small-bore shooting in Estonia. And the rest, he has wasted.
Paddy knows this, and he figures that Bono knows this too; Bono who actually worked hard for his money and put it into savings and wise investments. Remember the mockery when U2 moved assets from Ireland to Holland? You'll hear no mockery now.
But Paddy also knows that Bono won't let him down. When he's asked to explain what happened to poor Paddy, he'll steer clear of the dismal truth and he'll find the right words as always .. perhaps in his new column in the New York Times.
Yes, Paddy rejoices in this, in any situation in which Bono is doing well for himself. But with this comes the old anxiety.
Certainly the pre-inauguration gig was all about Bono, but on the inauguration day itself, Paddy found himself getting increasingly vexed.
Where could Bono be?
The former presidents could be seen arriving, but where was Bono?
The Joint Chiefs of Staff could be seen, but, strangely, no sign of Bono.
There was a bit of classical played, a song from Aretha Franklin but, inexplicably, Bono was nowhere to be seen.
Eventually, the President and the First Lady got into the big black limo, sans Bono.
For Paddy these were troubling scenes indeed. Because if Bono is not in the frame, from where Paddy is sitting it now follows, that Paddy is not in the frame either.
But at the end of a long and worrying day, he was heartened by the announcement on RTE that the Prime Time coverage would feature Seamus Heaney .. and Bono.
Fantastic!
ABOUT THE NEW ALBUM
THE band, U2, have recorded a track for a new charity initiative!

The Edge has spoken.
When The Edge calls, you pick up. Especially if you're a music magazine like MOJO and The Edge is giving a progress report on U2's still-delayed 12th studio album.
The Edge confirmed that the working title is still No Line on the Horizon. "What does it mean?" asked the MOJO interviewer. "It's like when you're moving forward, but you're not exactly sure what you're heading towards. That moment where the sea and the sky blend into one. It's an image of infinity, I suppose-a kind of Zen image," said The Edge. The Edge is kind of philosophical.
The Edge guitarist also reported that most of No Line's material comes from sessions with super-producers Brian Eno and Daniel Lanois, who also helped with writing.
The Edge confirmed some tracks: "Moment of Surrender" is seven and a half minutes long and "Unknown Caller" comes from sessions the band did while in Fez, Morocco. But The Edge was not an unknown caller. He was The Edge.
The Edge further described his sense of the record. "It's a record of two halves," said The Edge. "One half is songs that came virtually fully-formed out of sessions we did with Brian and Danny-stuff we've only played once or maybe twice and that's it: just the raw moment of creation. Then the other half is material we've kicked around a while and went through the usual cycle of versions and incarnations."
The Edge presents you with a paradox to ponder. "It sounds like a U2 album but it doesn't sound like anything we've done before and it doesn't really sound like anything that's happening at the moment." The Edge has spoken.
(Mahatma Gandhi)"We must become the change we want to see in the world."
The music of U2 has always been about heart and mind, body and soul. Down through the years the band have successfully thrown a spotlight on the work of key campaigning groups who are trying to make the world a better place.![]()

My 4 year old niece is madly in love with the Killers right now. We always have to listen to Hot Fuss when we're in the car. Her mother always tries to skip "Andy You're a Star" which drives my niece crazy. She always protests, rolling her eyes and saying, "Mom, you have to like it, it's by The Killers." My 12 year old likes everything from Elvis, The Beatles to The Partridge Family, ACDC, Van Halen, and Metallica. All kinds of music. This comes from listening to my music and playing Guitar Hero. I try and give them a range of different music to listen to than one kind because there is so much good music out there. Also it makes it easier to find a radio station or CD we can all listen to together.
Danny
My 5 year old has loved Louis Armstrong for a couple of years. The Beatles (especially "Hello Goodbye," or as he calls it "The Opposite Song). Glenn Miller Orchestra, especially "In the Mood" and "Chattanooga Choo Choo." Bruce Springsteen especially "The Pete Seeger Sessions." John Fogerty.
Emily
When Mac started using the song "You Me and the Bourgeoisie" by the Submarines for it's iPhone commercials, my then eight month old son was completely riveted. He now dances when ever he hears it. To note: we bought him the Honeysuckle Weeks CD for his first Christmas, and my husband I discovered a great band as a result. The kid's got taste.
Amy
My 6-year old's favorite song is "Bittersweet Symphony" by the Verve. U2's "Vertigo" ranks pretty high for her, too.

A couple of summers ago when the song was on the radio every five minutes- my then 6 year old love the song "Girlfriend" by Avril Lavigne. He still loves it and sings along when he hears it!
Troy Brownfield
My four and two-year-olds are Ramones nuts. My two-year-old actively requests "Rockaway Beach" by name. They're also into anything super-hero related (for example, any theme song or bit that can be associated with a
super-hero).

U2 MUSIC BOSS DIES
Friday November 28,2008
The music boss who gave legendary Irish rockers U2 their first big break died.
Irish music executive Rob Partridge, who handed the Beautiful Day hitmakers their first album deal, passed away following a battle with liver and bowel cancer. He was 60.
Partridge signed U2 to Island Records in 1980 when they were struggling to make it into the music industry.
As the label's head of press, Partridge went on to act as the band's publicist for over a decade.
Bono has paid tribute to the late music mogul, saying, "Rob Partridge was the first person in the British Music Industry to sing our praises. He not only had an eye for upcoming talent, he was a nurturer... a person who would educate you about the kind of obstacles you were going to meet and how to get over them... a rare human being."
