CSI Teams & Their Ubiquitous CSI Forensic Flashlights

CSI: Miami, CSI: New York, and CSI: Crime Scene (Las Vegas) each bring a fact-filled forensic fiction to our television landscapes, each week. They have done this successfully for several seasons of new episodes, series DVDs, and syndicated reruns.

Several times per episode, we see the CSIs engage in facile flashlight maneuvers that surface significant clues and reveal evidence invisible to the naked eye.

Sometimes--we garner a glimpse of the case
that contains the flashlights and filters
so critical to crime scene investigation & evidence detection.

This lens is about

  • those ubiquitous flashlights
  • and
  • the larger context within which they are used.

First (without turning on the lights)
we're going to use a narrow beam to look at sites that will provide clues and answers to questions, such as:
  • Where do they come from?
  • What are they for?
  • Why are there so many different kinds?
  • Where do they go when not in use?
  • How much do they cost?

Then we're going to step out into the daylight and use our broad strong beams to examine broader matters of Crime Scene Investigation, such as:
What other tools and materials are used to investigate a crime scene or follow up on evidence revealed by the flashlights?

Next, while we enjoy suspending our disbelief to enjoy the shows, we will examine the question of
what is fact and what is fiction?
What are some of the actual guidelines and procedures for processing crime scenes and preserving evidence?

We will reflect on the metaphor of CSI flashlights and the psychology of selective perception at work in our personal & professional lives.

For teachers, there are links to using forensics in science education, CSI career information and some notes on using these resources with within your math and literacy curriculum.

Lastly, for those inquiring minds that still want to know more, there will be annotated links to some additional scintillating crime scene investigation resources.

ALL OF US ENGAGE IN SELECTIVE PERCEPTION
The Marketing Terms dictionary of the American Marketing Association defines "selective perception" as,
  1. The conscious or unconscious increase in attention for stimuli and information consistent with a person's attitudes or interests, or conscious or unconscious discounting of inconsistent stimuli.
  2. The ability of the individual to protect himself or herself from the chaos and confusion of excessive and conflicting incoming stimuli.

By selectively perceiving and organizing these stimuli, order is created.

The needs, values, beliefs, opinions, personality, and other psychological and physical factors are brought into play leading to selective attention, selective exposure, and selective retention, along with the ability to distort and add information to meet the needs of the perceiver to cognitively reorganize reality.
In short, we tend to see what we choose to see.

Our psychological filters are our positive & negative biases.
Here is a list of 90 cognitive biases that can influence our perceptions.
They are clustered as
  1. Decision-making and behavioral biases
  2. Biases in probability and belief
  3. Social biases
  4. Memory errors
