It is designed- to seed & feed the curiosity of lifelong learners and
- provide in-class, on-line & home school students and their teachers
- with starting points for interdisciplinary inquiries.
- The lens provides annotated links
- to a wide range of categorical information about pencils,

It is not a comprehensive resource.
It is a collection of starting points.
Toward the end of this lens, you will find a
ubiquitous object challenge.
You will be given the option of jumping to

Full Disclosure of Lensmaster Bias
"Everything's connected to everything else." - Barry Commoner

As a K-20 student, life-long learner and professional educator,
I have always had, and continue to have,
a strong positive bias toward the importance and value
of interdisciplinary learning;
making interdisciplinary connections across the curriculum and life.
This lens is steeped in that bias.

Ways to Use this Lens: Curious Life Long Learners

Select "Pencil" topics of interest from the table of contents. Topic clusters begin with a pencil topic. Most are followed by supporting/interactive modules.
Topics can be explored in any order.
Each is a self-contained collection of annotated links.
Many of the annotations will raise questions or cue you to content in the links.
While these elements are primarily for guiding student inquiry,
you might want to reflect on them in terms of
schooling as you experienced it and schooling today.
Click to jump to the Table of Contents or keep reading to see how teachers might use the lens.

Ways to Use this Lens: In Class, Online & Homeschool Teachers

Use exploration of the topics as a point of departure for addressing your formal, local curriculum standards and benchmarks.
Topic content is drawn from the fields and disciplines for math, science, social studies and visual art.
Opportunities abound to develop and extend students' competencies in
communicating using a variety of modes,
for a variety of purposes, and
with a variety of audiences.
Wrap development and application of skill based learning from language arts and math around the content of appropriate topics.
Where a set of links have a common subtopic (ex. history) assign a link to a group, then have groups compile their comparative findings. ~ Determining categories of information can be done in advance or as part of the compiling process.
Select developmentally appropriate content and design developmentally appropriate interactions with the content and one another.
Provide the support needed for successful inquiry.
PrintingUse the printer icon in the right sidebar to create a "ready for printing" version of the lens.
If you only want to print a specific module (like Pencils as Inventions)
- use File - Print View to see a Print formatted view of the lens.

What is pencilness?
A pencil is both an object and a concept.
You can easily distinguish a pencil from a marker, crayon or pen--if you've had experience with all four, eh?

Pencils as Objects of Scientific Inquiry
Different Sciences Look at the Same Pencil Differently
The Earth Science of Geology is the home of information about the properties of that mineral in a pencil that leaves the marks.
The Physical Sciences of Chemistry and Physics each look at the same pencil differently.
The Biological Sciences of Botany and Human Biology (in this case your Senses will help you determine what kinds of wood are being used for pencil casings. (The language of Texture (an element of Art) will help describe those differences.)

Geology: The Unleaded Pencil

Is there clay in a pencil?
What is graphite?
What is plumbago?
The contributions of three persons who significantly contributed to the development of today's pencil are noted in this article.

plastic?
tropical rain forest wood?
Texture

Without the language of texture,
you won't be able to say what you see!
Human Biology
particularly our senses of sight, smell and touch will be important data gathering and analytical tools for determining the material in which your pencil is encased.

A Ubiquitous Object Challenge
"The Ubiquitous _____"
Not a challenge, as in a contest. This is more of a thinking-aloud reflection.
ubiquitousPronunciation: yü-bi-kwu-tus
Function: adjective
Date: 1830
: existing or being everywhere at the same time
: constantly encountered
: widespread
At the time of this writing, 03/31/08,
a Squidoo search for "ubiquitous" pulls up 58 lenses.
"Ubiquitous" is not in any of the titles.
There are many
ubiquitous objects. In this lens, I just happened to pick pencils
(and got a little carried away, eh?)
The challenge is to think about whether there are any
ubiquitous objects about which you might like to do a lens.
If they are each titled, "The Ubiquitous _____," we could develop quite an interesting collection.
Beyond the title, I'm thinking the layout, content, audience(s), length and function of each lens would be wide open.
