in reply to bungalowbill. I have used my Thai phone with AIS in Laos but it was still close to the river in Vientiane and Suvanakhet. I have never been to Pakse so not sure of coverage there. There is roaming so if coverage you should be able to use it.

I would take both. At the border when getting your visa on entry US$ are best. Many places where I have been accept TB but often uncertain about exchange rate. If use $$ I would exchange at a bank and take only $20 bills. If you can use TB it is definitely easier because won't have to carry around excessive amounts of Lao Gip and get used to denomonations.

in reply to bungalowbill That is the heart of Candle Festival and the high season here. You should definitely book your accommodations ahead of time. If your plans are solid now wouldn't be too soon to get what you want.

Phibunmangsahan, Ubon Ratchathani, Thailand

Gaeng Saphoo - Rapids on the Mun River

A nice place to visit from December til June in Ubon Ratchathani province is Phibun Mangsahan. It is a small town nestled along the banks of the Mun River 50 kilometers East of Ubon Ratchathani City.

Phibun is known to us foreigners who live here mainly because the local Immigration office is there. Having to viist there often and sometimes have to do some waiting I have had opportunity to explore the place.

I am glad I did. A month or two after the monsoon season ends, rocks begin to appear from the flowing waters of the Mun River. The water rushing past the rocks creates a new character for the river and a new song.

I like to go there and sit in the park like picnic area on the bank. Sit down and someone will come to you and ask if you would like to order some food. It is worth it. The fish is tastey and fresh and the service is friendly and lovely.

It is usually peaceful there and makes for a relaxing afternoon. Along with the good food, friendly smiles and scenic views I would recommend a cold beer too. When you come to Ubon Ratchathani, it is well worth it to take a daytrip and enjoy the Gaeng Saphoo rapids in Phibun Mangsahan, Ubon Ratchathani, Thailand.

Tung Sri Muang

Ubon City Public Park

During the day when it's hot it seems like an unused deserted park. But as the sun begins to set and the daylight begins to fade, the population of the park slowly but surely increases.

Tung Sri Muang is more than just a park, it's one of the social centers in Ubon. The heat of the day makes it uncomfortable so people wait until it begins cooling down. Many people meet their friends there to exercise together. YOu will find a variety of programs. There is a trail running around the park used for jogging and walking. At both ends you will find many people joining in aerobics.

While many people are using Tung Sri Muang for exercising others just sit on the park benches talking and watching other people. Often you will see them wave or nod to friends or family.

There are basketball and volleyball games going on too. Work up a sweat, increase your heartrate, burn some calories or if that's not your thing, just relax, watch others doing it and take in the relazation and socialization.

When you decide it's time to leave the park you can get some dinner at the many food stalls lining the street just outside the park. Eat it there at the tables provided or get it to go and eat at home.

Tung Sri Muang experience is a good way to wind down your day and begin the journey into evening.
