Uechi-ryu is a protective/defensive system brought back from
China to Okinawa/Japan by Kanbun Uechi in the early 1900's. Based on a 7 animal
system Kanbun Sensei studied in China.

The seven animals are: Tiger, Dragon, Crane, Leopard, Mantis,
Snake, Cobra.

Commonly thought Uechi-ryu is based on only the "Big Three"
(Tiger, Dragon, Crane) as these animals represent the three major 'ready' positions
of the system. When Kanbun Sensei returned to Okinawa, he never taught publicly,
however while working in Wakayama Japan he decided to teach once a small group
of students.

Kanbun Sensei called his teaching "Pangainoon-Ryu Karate-Jutsu"
-Half-Hard-Soft Style Empty Hand Technique. In 1940, Kanbun Sensei renamed the
system "UechiRyu Karate-Jutsu". Soon after Kanbun Sensei's death in
1948, the art was again renamed UechiRyu KarateDo (Uechi's Method of the Way
of Karate).

The last living student of Kanbun Uechi is Toyama Seiko Sensei;
who preserves Kanbun Sensei's teachings via his association: Okinawa
KarateDo UechiRyu Zankai
.
