How could anyone stand to be seen in it?
A monstrosity encased in plastic cladding, a big blobby butt and the automobile equivalent of buck teeth.
Who would design this? Moreover, who would buy it??

Background
The sad story
The Pontiac Aztek was GM's first attempt at a "crossover" i.e. a cross between and SUV and a car.
They were probably a little ahead of their time and they made the mistake of giving the idea to Pontiac and having too many cooks spoiling that broth.
The result was the Aztek which was manufactured in Mexico from 2001-2005. It never approached break even and despite price cuts, and changes in the model it really didn't catch on.
Probably because it was as ugly as sin.

Aztek sales were about 27,000 in it's first year. 50% of those sales were to car rental outlets that couldn't choose which model they received.
To break even, the Aztek needed to sell 75,000 per year and never got to more than a third of that.
My guess is that it was because it was so hard to look at.

I was shocked the first time I saw one - I couldn't believe anyone would think anyone would buy it! It was interesting to find out car rental agencies were forced to take them - the only time I've been in one was when a colleague rented one. It was OK on the inside. Luckily it was night so I don't think many people saw me in it.

LOVE my 04 Aztek! Best of both worlds. Drives AWESOME in the snow and rain! And I feel SAFE in it, as theres a lot more to it! A little "space like" vehicle, but you know, not as bad as them old ugly astro vans!!!!!!!
