Niche Directories Are All The Rage!

Achieving high positions in the SERPS (search engine ranking positions) requires, amongst a lot of things, keyword rich backlinks. These, whilst not exactly the most important things, are rather desirable with promoting your website.

The easiest way to build backlinks is through submitting your website to a number of directories, but how do you know if a directory is actually good? Here's a guide to help you.

What are Niche Directories?

Niche directories are directories that consider a specific niche. They come in two types:

- Niche by area.
- Niche by topic.

Niche by area only lists sites that concern themselves with a particular area (such as UK, Texas, Australia etc.), whereas Niche by topic only concern themselves for specific topics, such as Shopping Directories, Travel Directories or Forum Directories, or they offer a unique way to get listed such as Bidding Directories or toplists.

Why Advertise on Niche Directories

There are a number of reasons why you should advertise on Niche Directories, these are:

- Highly Relevant Searches: You'll probably get people visiting the directory site from relevant searches in google. If you're on there, they'd probably click through.
- Usually Better Managed: the owner will probably spend more time keeping the directory clean from spurious and irrlevant results, thus making it stronger. (I say this is probable, read the next section for advice on finding a relevant niche directories).

What to Look For In a Good Niche Directory

Here's what I'd do to find a good niche directory.

- Google Search: Google [your chosen keyword] + "directory" (without the [], + and ": so if you were looking for Travel Directories, google "travel directory"), see what comes up - make a note of the top 30 in them.
- See How Well They're Indexed: Get the URL of the directory, and do a search in google: site:[url-without-http://]. If few pages appear, then the chances of getting any result from submission are quite slim.
- Check the quality of backlinks: Visit a few sites in the directory. Do you want your sites associated with them? If not, then don't submit.
- Check Price & Terms of Submission: How much does it cost? How long does it take to get accepted? What happens if your submission is refused? If accepted, how long is your submission live? What payment processor is used? Ask yourself these questions before submitting.

Niche by area! I would go to a London directory to search for London businesses!

Niche by topic

I think there should be a "it depends" option. Quality niche directories really help the SE's and the subscrbers - I tend to think the topic type is more beneficial unless you are promoting a local business for local keywords.
