The ukulele is small and cuddly. It can be amped up and rock but it's just as happy quietly strumming late at night, and it doesn't make your housemates hurl things at you for doing so.

I have been playing guitar for the past 10 years. But since getting hold of a ukulele, I have simply lost interest in it.
I'm not saying I will only listen to ukulele music -- the Rolling Stones didn't play any ukue, for one thing. But the easiness with which you can pick up a uke and start strumming or picking makes it the ultimate casual, take anywhere instrument.
