SEOcontest2008 - UK Webmaster World SEO Contest

First week of SEOcontest2008 is behind and buzz about it still growing. There is over ten thousand pages now shown in Google search results for the term seocontest2008. In addition to the competing domains there are pages from webmaster forums and blogs around the world on many different languages.

There has been also no so positive development - WordPress deleted number of SEOcontest2008 blogs participating in the contest from it's server, declaring them as a spam sites that violate terms of service. Now to stay in the contest webmasters who were using WordPress hosted blogs will have to start from nothing again with different domain. This news just proves one more time how vulnerable you are when using free hosting...

Yahoo spiders finally started to pick up some results for SEOcontest2008 and now showing almost 150 thousands related pages while MSN Live is in the middle with little over 20 thousands search results.

There has been a lot of obvious spamming going on: tons of registrations on numerous forums under the name seocontest2008, comments on popular blogs with the same name as an anchor text and link back to the competing site, purchased blog posts and much more...

The positive part is that quality pages with real content and those who are using legal optimizing techniques are moving closer to the top of Google SERPs or keeping theirs positions near the top.

It has been little bit over 48 hours after official targeted term "seocontest2008" was announced and UK Webmaster World SEO contest became hot topic on many webmaster forums all over the world.

Google that did not have anything to show two days ago now displays over 2400 results for the term seocontest2008. MSN Live Search mostly showing social bookmarking sites and jumping from 3 thousands to 200 results every few hours. Yahoo still found less than 200 pages related to SEOcontest2008.

Right from the start one of the senior UKWW members Resonate with his seocontest2008 page has occupied top spot on Google and just recently has been moved to the second result page. New registrations are still coming in and it's too early to make any kind of conclusions.

One disturbing part that came to my attention there already has been attempts of some "shady" tactics to manipulate results but management team is paying close attention to the contest and I am sure in the end the best of the best will come out on the top...

On the January 31 there will be announcement with the selected search term which has to be used for pages optimization. At that time all contestants will have to submit theirs new url's that they will be optimizing to gain highest position on Google for the announced search term: seocontest2008. The person who achieves highest SERP on the first of April will be the winner of UKWW SEO Contest.

All legal SEO techniques are allowed with one restriction - the page (would it be new domain, sub domain, or sub folder) must be brand new with no previous back links or cashed version on the day it's registered for the contest.
