Intro to Ultimate
Ultimate frisbee is such a great game. Why? Because it is available for people of all ages, men and women. Ultimate frisbee takes a lot more skills then people may think. You need skills like running, jumping, diving, sprinting, catching, and more importantly throwing. All of these things can be achieve through hard work and some guidance.Even if Ultimate isn't all serious for you, if you can get out there, have some fun, and be with friends and family, that is truly all you need to have.
But on the other hand if Frisbee is you're game, and you are very dedicated and love the sport. You might want to get ahead of the game and start getting bigger, start getting faster, and more importantly start getting stronger. These attributes will help you to dominate the playing field.

Ultimate - Spirit Of The Game
This is meaning that it is a friendly game and it is meant to be kept that way. Of course people will lose their tempers, but express your anger in a better way than throwing punches.
Being that their are no referees in ultimate, all disputes are settled between the players themselves. This is where spirit of the game comes in. Be courteous and reasonable about fouls that you commit or are accusing.

Why play Ultimate
Their are many reasons that I would suggest playing ultimate.1. First of all, it's something different than the usual athletics. It requires more than just hand-eye coordination, and you will enjoy every minute of learning the new throws.
2. Second, ultimate will put you in the best shape of your life. Ultimate is a game of endurance and athleticism, and will get you in shape fast! If you don't think you can handle playing with your current fitness, check this out and get in shape so you can hang with the youngbloods

3. The last reason is for pure enjoyment. Amazing throws and layout catches are only part of the great enjoyment. Every part of the game is an exhilerating rush as your team moves the disc up the field.

It's a nice thought, but basketball has a much bigger following than Ultimate and it is highly unlikely that Ultimate would ever catch up. But, Ultimate is still the Greatest Sport Ever Invented By Man! :D

Not likely. Big sports mean big money unfortunately. That's not necessarily a bad thing. I generally prefer watching sports where the athletes aren't all a bunch of overpaid, whining prima donas.

How do you play Ultimate
The best way to learn the rules of Ultimate is to actually play the game, but I will do my best at teaching you how to play. The Field
The field that you play on is set up similar to a football field, in the sense that it has 2 scoring endzones. The length of the field, not including the endzones is 70 yards. Each endzone is 25 yards. The width of the field is 40 yards.
This image should give you an idea of what it looks like.

Begin Play
Each play begins with each team going to their defending endzone. The defending team will throw the disc off to the other team. This is called the "pull". If the pull goes off of the field, The person on the offense will take the disc about two thrids up the field (length) on their side, and resume play from the center of the field (width). If you pick up the disc, you are obligated to throw it, and you may not hand it off to another player on your team.
travels
If the disc is in your hands, you may not take any steps until the disc is passed to another team mate or turned over.
scoring
A team scores by throwing the disc to a player on his/her own team in the respective endzone. If the player catches the disc out of the endzone, but their momentum carries them in, they must bring the disc to the goal line and resume play from their. If you are on defense, and the other teams offense is in your scoring endzone, you may intercept a pass and you will get the score. The game is usually played to 15, but it is usually decided by the players before the game. Halftime occurs when one team passes the halfway mark in scoring.
Non-contact
Ultimate is a non-contact sport. You may not touch the thrower, or any other player on the field. If you do, the player that got fouled will simply call foul and the disc will go back to the thrower. The same rule applies for a pick. A pick occurs when an offensive player tries to get open, but the defender following him cannot get to him because of another player in the way. If the pick is involved with the play, the disc will go back to the original thrower, but if it is un-involved, you are allowed to catch up to your mark and play is resumed. The image below is a foul because the man in the white shirt is physically making it impossible for the other team to get the disc

change of possession
A change of possession occurs whenever the offensive team throws an incomplete pass, out-of-bounds, or the other team intercepts the disc. After the turnover, a player on the now offensive team will pick up the disc from the spot of the turnover and resume play. If the tunover is out of bounds, the player brings the disc to the sideline. If the disc is in the back of an endzone, the player will bring the disc to the goalline and resume play.
spirit foul
A spirit foul is any foul that involves unsportsman-like behavior. This includes intentionally messing up the opponents and pure unsportsmanship.
No referees
Since their are no referees, you must call your own fouls. A foul occurs anytime their is contact, or if an offensive player with the disc travels. If you dissagree with a foul that is called on you, you can say "contest" and the disc will go back to the thrower (unless you are the thrower). If you agree that you did commit a foul, just say "no contest" and play will resume the normal way.

Offensive Strategies
To succeed in ultimate, you will need a great offensive formation. There are a few formations that your team ought to learn.1. Stack- A stack is the most popular form of offense. In a stack formation, the offense will form a staright line in the center of the field. The stack will continuesly move slowly upfield. From the back of the stack, the offense will cut towards the disc one after another.

7
Each number represents a player. 7 has the disc. 1 will cut first. If he does not get the disc, he will go back in the stack behind 6. Next two will cut and do the same thing.
2. Zone- Zone offense involves three handlers, two poppers, and two deeps. The three handlers set up behind eveyone horozontally. The poppers each set up on opposite sides of the field. Their job is to cut in towards the handlers to recieve the disc. The two longs set up further up the field on each sideline. If the disc is on the left side of the field, the long will cut towards the disc full speed. Once the disc swings to the right side, the long will stay on the sideline and sprint towards the endzone. This helps spread out the defense so that you will be open.

P P
H H H
H=handler P=popper L=long
3. Horozontal- This involves three handlers in the same position as a zone offense. You will also need four cutters (two inside cutters and two outside cutters). On each side of the field you will have an inside cutter and an outside cutter. The handlers will handle the disc, while the inside and outside cutters switch off cutting towards the disc.

H H H
OC=outside cutter IC=Inside cutter H=Handler
Trust me, playing these two forms of offense is a constant sprint to get the disc. If you would like to get in shape so you can play ultimate, check this out! Get in shape to play ultimate!
Defensive Strategies
Their are two defensive strategies that may help your team play to their maximum potential.1. Man- This is the most self-explanatory defensive strategy that there is. Pretty much, you just follow one person on the other team and try to prevent them from getting the disc. You will use "man" when the other team uses a stack offense.
2. Zone defense- This form of defense is a little bit harder, but still do-able. The first thing you do is form a cup around the thrower. To do this, you take three of your defenders and surround the thrower. Only one person is allowed to be within ten feet of the thrower, so the others are ten feet away, and preventing any forward throw.
Next you will have two wings. Their is one wing on each side, and they prevent any throw up the line of the field.
Next you will have a short deep and a deep deep. The short deep wil stop any short throws up the middle of the field, and the deep deep stops any large hucks up the field

Fetching new data from eBay now... please stand byThrowing a flick
A "flick" is a very useful throw to learn in ultimate. Why learn a flick?
Most of the time, the defending team will call out "force flick." By this, they are intending to force you to throw a flick. If you do not know how to, they will defend you very easily.
How do I throw a flick?
Throwing a flick is very simple, and most people catch on very easily.
Step 1- get yourself a disc of any sort, and go to an area that is adequate for throwing.
Step 2- with your main throwing hand, place your index finger and middle finger on the inside of the disc. Your middle finger should be on the rim, and your index finger should be above that. Let your thumb fall naturally on the outside of the disc.
Step 3- Place your elbow on the top of your hip. Have your throwing target a maximum of thiry feet away to start. When throwing the disc, you will flick your wrist and release the disc. Naturally, you may swing your arm as you are flicking your wrist. This happens to everybody so don't worry. Just keep throwing to your intended target and it will eventually click!
This is how the disk should look in your hand

How to throw a backhand
The "Backhand" is the most basic throw to the game. As amateurs are taught to throw a disc, the first (and usually only) throw that they learn is the backhand. Why learn the backhand?
The backhand is great for many purposes. It is especially useful for a huck (a long throw down field). Also, your opponent may force backhand for various reasons.
How do I throw a backhand?
Step 1- step one is to grip your disc with your pinkie finger, ring finger, and middle finger at the intersection of the rim and the underside of the disk. Place your index finger along the side of your disk. Have your thumb parallel with to your index finger on the top of the disc.
Step 2- place your right foot out and extend your arm almost completely. Swing your wrist (just like any other throw) and release the disc. When doing so, ensure that your body does not lean back because this may cause the disc to slice left and be easily defended.
This is how the disc should look in your hand
Other throws
The following throws are neat to know, but not 100% necessary for the game.1. Hammer- The first throw to know is a Hammer. To successfully throw this throw, you will grip it exactly the same as a flick. Step forward with your right foot, and release the disc over your head at a 45 degree angle. Most amateurs tend to throw this very high, which causes it to mess up. This is an effective throw for breaking your opponent up high.
2. Thummer- A thumber is not overly necessary to know, unless you just want to impress your friends. To use this throw, hold your disc completely verticle. place your thumb on the inside rim, and your index finger on the outside of the disc. Let your other fingers lie under the disc. When you throw it, release it vertically and parallel to your head. The shape of the disc will level the throw out. This is a very advanced throw that may take a while to get.
3. Scoober- A scuber is an effective throw in rare situations. To throw a scuber, grip the disc as you would a flick. Turn the disc upside down, and release it across your body. Angle the disc significantly because the shape of the disc will effect it greatly. This throw is useful to break your defender when your stall count is high.
4. Push Pass- A push pass is not entirely necessary, but some players find it easier to work the disc up field quickly with a push pass. To do a push pass, grip the disc just like a backhand, but you will simply push the disc forward, letting it roll off of your index finger. This is not to be used for a long pass.
These throws may give you trouble at first, but just keep working at it and you will get it in no time.

Tips for playing in the wind
Offense and Defense
Every ultimate player hates waking up to a windy day. The wind can completely destroy even your best throws.First I will tell you about playing offense upwind. The key to this is to make several short, crisp passes. When making this throw, try to keep the disc downlow, because most of the wind is uphigh. Also, make sure that you keep the disc as level as you can, because if the front end is up, the wind will pull it up.
When downwind can be the most fun for a good reciever. I would suggest getting the disc to your best handler, and send your best reciever into the endzone. Going downwind is the time to take advantage of your deep cuts, and progress up the field in a few medium to long lengthed throws.
Now I will explain how to play defense against a team going upwind. The best strategy here is to play zone defense. This will cause them to throw the disc more without progressing forward. Eventually, the wind will get a hold on someones throw, forcing them to turn the disc over
This is what happens when you throw it high in the wind

Ultimate frisbee history
From the beginning
In 1968, a student named Joel Silver introduced his idea of ultimate frisbee to the Columbia High School student council in New Jersey. The team practiced in a parking lot, with no lines except for endzones that were marked by random objects.
In 1970, rules were added, and the first high school game was played between CHS and Millburn High School. Columbia High School crushed Millburn with a 43-10 victory.
In 1972, the first college game was played between Rutgers and Princeton. Rutgers won the first game 29-27.
Since then, many national and international tournaments have been played worldwide, many ending in an American victory.
Today, their are about 100,000 Ultimate players in 40 different countries, and over 13,000 UPA (ultimate players association) members in the US.
Ultimate frisbee history has enhanced at a very fast pace. Hopefully it will become as popular as some of the other sports that we all know today!

What's a Wham-O?
When buying a disc tp play ultimate with, it is very important to buy the correct disc. The common mistake of an amateur is to buy a "wham-O" disc. A wham-O is a type of disc that is not allowed in UPA sanctioned events. Although Wham-O discs have the same weight (175g), as a regulation disc, but the rim is much larger.
Well how do I spot a wham-O disc?
The most obvious sign of a wham-o is the enlarged rim. Another sign that it may be a wham-O, is if the disc says "original frisbee disc" on it. "Frisbee" is a brand name that is not the right dimensions.
To make sure that you get the right disc, try buying a disc from discraft (I would recommend the "ULTRASTAR"). Discraft is a reliable source that has sold discs to UPA members all over the country.
The picture above is the most common wham-O disc.

Right now, ultimate is barely known throughout most states. This is a problem. To enhance the growth in this sport, try starting a club in your town or have a weekly pick-up game. Each week you should get a new friend involved.
In my town (Greensboro NC), their are two pickup games each week.
The great thing about it is that their are athletes of all ages. We have two 14 year olds, and three 45 year olds, and all different skill levels.
Women, don't be afraid to get involved either; we have atleast six women play each week at our local pick-up.
My Ultimate story
updated often
I got their and we seperated into teams, and I was surprised at how few people I knew on my team.
Well back to my story. We were just getting started, and I wasn't ontop of my game. I opened up by getting handblocked, then outrun throughout the whole field to get scored on.
I knew that I had to redeem myself, and the opportunity came in one of the next plays. We were on the left side of the field, and I was on defence. The opponents best player, named Jimmy, had the disc and had just broken the mark. He threw the disc to his reciever in the endzone, and everyone thought they had scored.
Then, out of nowhere I leaped completely horozongtal with the ground and knocked the disc out of the air.
The moral of the story here is that with this program, you will be in the shape of your life to make amazing layout D's. Get this here!

These terms will be useful if you ever get serious in Ultimate.
Ultimate Terms
1. force-flick- When someone says "force-flick," they are saying that their team needs to force the offense to throw a flick.
2. force middle- When someone says "force middle," they are saying that their team should force the thrower to throw in the direction of the center of the field.
3. force backhand- When someone says "force-backhand," they are saying that their defense should force the thrower to throw a backhand.
4. no big!- "No big!" is usually yelled by the defense when they are telling the defender on the disk not to let the thrower throw a long throw.
5. stack (vertical)- A stack is a form of offense where the offense makes a vertical stack in the center of the field, and then cut towards the disc from the back of the stack.
6. horozontal (horo)- Horozontal is a form of offense that is effective in wearing out the defense and moving the disc upfield.
7. zone defense- Zone defense is a good way to surprise the offense, and put extra pressure on the handlers.
8. zone offense- This is similar to horozontal that involves poppers cutting towards the disc to progress forwards.
9. handlers- Handlers are the best, and most reliable throwers on a team. On a turnover, the handlers are the players that will retrieve the disc and make the first throw.
10. huck- A huck is referred to as a long throw downfield. Handlers are usually the people to make this throw.

16. stall count- The stall count is when the defender that is guarding the man with the disc counts to ten. (the offense only has 10 seconds to throw the disc)
17. chili- This is when your team is telling the the offense to slow down instead of forcing a hard throw. this is just a different way to say "slow down"
18. handblock- This is when the defender stops the disc directly after it is released by the thrower with his/her hand.
19. Footblock- When the defensive stops the disc directly after it is thrown with his/her foot.
19. Pivot- When you plant your foot (right foot for right handers and left foot for left handers) and step to the side (allowing you the throw around the marker).
20. swing- This is when you pass the disc around the width of the field to the other side. You do this to get a better position in the field or reset the stall count.
21. Dump- Player who stands behind the thrower in order to get a quick pass when the stall count is high.
22. Clear out- This is when you are clogging the cutting area and you need to get out of the way. This is usually after you make a cut when you don't recieve the disc.
