- The horse's experience at the track. Each track has it's own features - some have uphill starts or ends, some have sharp bends etc
- The trainer's record at the track. Does he or she have a record of winners?
- The jockey's record at the track and current form
- The going and the horse's experience of it
- How long since horse last ran?

... You get the picture! Yes, there are people that will assess each race on these and other factors but that's probably their full time job!
