unChristian: What a New Generation Really Thinks about Christianity... and Why It Matters

unChristian takes an empirical (or data driven, if you like) look at how people think about Christianity. And the view is not flattering.

The most common phrases in describing Christianity are hypocritical, homophobic, judgmental, and closed minded.

Ouch.

the guts of the book

David Kinnaman and Gabe Lyons put out a compelling argument for the need to change how we approach the world. And it's hard to argue with the amount of research the Barana Group put together.

To many, Christians just don't come across as grace-filled, loving, people. The evidence is just too overwhelming.

unChristian is really divided into two parts.

1. Research. The book tackles six topics that make up that "unChristian" concept. They explore exactly what makes up terms like "hypocritical" and "sheltered." Kinnaman then tries to explain why people feel that way about Christians.

2. Solutions. One of the strengths of unChristian is that it not only addresses the problem, but provides possible solutions. Many of the chapters have comments from prominent leaders and speakers giving specific insight on the topic.

The book itself can be a difficult read for some Christians. Especially when it reminds us in all the ways we mess up. But if you're serious about changing the world, this is an essential book to read.

empty chairs?

Is this what we've really come to?

Christianity started as a vibrant, radical movement that touched people's lives. Christians were known as people who charged into dangerous situations. Not because they had a death wish, but because they saw people in need.

But is that what we are now? Or are we just people who turn a blind eye to the emptiness and suffering of others?

Clearly there are people (and churches) who make a difference. Some of them are well known (Mother Teresa). Others are less well known. Maybe they are even your neighbor.

So there are exceptions.

But to many people, they have never been exposed to these people. And when they look at Christians they see nothing but judgment and condemnation. Not the surpassing worth that God sees in each of us.

where do we go next?

It can be difficult to live out your faith in a meaningful way. There is always a fear of being laughed at or a fear of being vulnerable.

But Christianity has always been about being different.

We need to remember that each time we talk to someone (or write a post on Squidoo) that we're really representing God. And when we do that poorly, we can hurt people. And that's the last way God wants us to live out our faith.

We can change people's views of Christianity. But we can't do that by just talking about it - we have to get out there and live lives that make a difference.

what this means to me

I figured a lot of people looked at Christians and thought that they were unloving, judgmental, and full of themselves. I'm sure I've come acoss as that more than I care to admit.

But I had no idea it was this bad.

Then a strange thing happened. The longer I thought about the book, the more excited I became. The more this book gave me hope. I can no longer use the excuse, "I'm only one person, what can I do?" Because it's painfully obvious that even one person living out their life like Jesus lived his, would change people's perception of Christianity.

And lets face it - it's exciting to know that you can make a difference!

As I've thought about this book I realized there were other areas that should be addressed. So if you want more, check out some of the other articles I've written.

1. an extended look at the book
2. why relationships matter in talking about God.
3. what do we do when we are unChristian

Thanks for sharing your thoughts. It is unfortunate that when we act "unChristain" that seems to be what makes the news. I think the solution is for each of us to commit to living our lives in service towards others. (Which is much harder than it sounds, lol!) If every Christian could change one person's life, the world would radically change.

very interesting lens! why is it when someone does something "unchristian" there is more focus on it? there should be more reporting on real Christian accomplishments(but that's not news) we are not perfect and God is our Judge...being a Christian means to be Christ-like...we all fail at times...we are a reflection of our faith, our mission being a Christian is to accomplish planting seeds and shining through the Love of our Lord...Thank God for His unwavering LOVE! 5*s

I like the way you think any time we get out of the box is good for us! Thank you

It's definitely worth the read. So if you pick it up I'd love to hear your reaction.

While I love talking about what God's done in my life, that wasn't always the case. I certainly remember a time where talking about God held no appeal.

While I think everyone longs to connect with God, it's important to bring up the subject with care. After all, no one wants to be thumped with a Bible!

Never heard of this book, so thanks for recommending it, I've realized what things like squidoo and youtube can do in the great harvesting. "Churchy" people that aren't really Christ-like have pushed people away... we need to take a different approach. But lately I'm finding it easier to talk to people about spiritual things since the world is feeling so lost right now.
