Don't Be Fooled by Unclaimed Money Scams
Find which sites you can trust for your unclaimed money search...
The scam artists contact you and offer to find unclaimed money due to you for "free" and then charge you just a small amount (from the money due to you) to do all the paperwork and put the money in your bank account. Since you are paying nothing until the lost treasure is found, what do you have to lose?
Here how unclaimed money scams generally work. You receive an email saying something on the lines of "part of the half a trillion dollars of unclaimed money is this country belongs to you." To bolster their claim they will quote some research or a TV show like Oprah and says that 9 in 10 Americans are owed money they don't know about. They will say that you are one of the 9. All you have to do is call a 1-809 number to avail of their "free" search. Here is your first cost - the 1-809 call is not free and the scamsters will be making money out of it. Sometime you never hear from them again and if you call them they say sorry, it is not you but someone else who is owned the unclaimed money.
If the unclaimed money scam goes further, you will receive a copy of an official looking data base that will has your last name and first initial on it as proof you have unclaimed money lying around. What they now do is ask you to pay a fee or membership charge to enable them to investigate further and provide you the details you need to get hold of the unclaimed money. After you pay, they will send a mail saying sorry, and that either the unclaimed money database was wrong or that it refers to someone else.
Another danger of the unclaimed money scam is that you may reveal personal information that could be used cheat you in other ways.
