By using auto auctions you can beat dealers prices by thousands of dollars.

Auto auctions happen by the hundreds each week. Banks, government agencies, and individuals use auctions to liquidate their auto inventory.

What to expect at the auction house.

You know what they say if it sounds to good to be true it probably is. This rings true in the auto sales world everyday. Many ads claim that you can buy a top of the line car for just a couple hundred of dollars. This more often than not is untrue. However auto auctions can generate great deals for buyers. Many auctions throughout the country are not limited only to cars but also sell heavy machinery, boats, homes and land.

One of my first jobs as a teenager was driving cars through hte auction block on saturday mornings. It was allways quite a show. Its easy to become overwhelmed as a first time bidder. Arming yourself with knowledge of the process can ease the stress.

-find a auto auction near you with local auctions a great resource

-Research the type of car you want before arriving at the auction. Look up pricing on the types of cars you intend to bid on. The Kelly blue book is an excelent resource on used car prices.

-Arrive early to the auto auction. This will allow you to inspect the cars in the lot and ask the dealer/seller any questions you might have about the car.

-Inspect the car from paint to engine. Copy down the VIN (vehicle identification number) This number can be checked online with a car history service. Any prior accidents, repairs and claims will be listed.

-Have a set amount of money you are prepared to spend and plan to stick with it. This keeps you in check if the bidding begins to escalate.

-Bring all your proper identification (drivers lisence, and banking information)

-If you successfully bid on the car review all contracts before signing. Hidden fees can be overlooked very easily.

Common sense is your greatest asset while bidding on cars.
